Internet traffic consumption is growing at a record rate in Belarus. More than 90% of velcom 3G network subscribers use mobile Internet every day, said Robert Dashyan, Deputy Director General for Marketing, Sales and Subscriber Services of velcom.

The share of smartphone owners among subscribers is steadily growing and has already reached 60%. Following them, the average volume of Internet traffic per subscriber grows, while subscribers make voice calls less and less. “Thus,“ voice consumption ”is gradually decreasing. The market is shifting towards the mobile Internet - this is the global trend, ”explained Robert Dashyan.

Infrastructure development stimulates traffic consumption. Thus, velcom has built the largest 3G network in Belarus. For this mobile operator launched 3,200 3G base stations across the country, including about 2,000 of the UMTS-900 standard. Clear voice communication in HD-Voice format and high-speed Internet became available in the territory where 98% of the population of Belarus live. By the end of the year, the country's 3G coverage will be compared with the coverage of GSM communications.

“With the creation of the largest 3G network, it became possible to bring fundamentally new proposals to the market. For the first time, we have launched a line of “Comfort” tariff plans, in which voice traffic within the 3G network is free. Previously, there was no traffic separation in 2G and 3G. Now we have implemented this, and we would like to draw the attention of consumers to this. In addition, the cost of an additional megabyte has decreased and a free SMS notification has appeared at the end of traffic, - explained the Deputy General Director.

According to him, there used to be a belief that the battery of a smartphone is discharged faster when working in 3G. In addition, some subscribers have faced unstable communication quality when moving between the coverage areas of base stations of different generations. “Now the disadvantages of growth have been overcome - the quality of the 3G network is an order of magnitude higher than that of the GSM connection, but the stereotypes, unfortunately, remain,” Robert Dashyan stressed.

The top manager also explained how to identify a call in a 3G network. “If there is an H, H + or 3G icon on the phone screen, then this call will be free for users of the“ Comfort ”tariffs. Moreover, it is important that a subscriber's call, which was in the 3G network at the time of the call initiation, will be counted as unlimited, even if it later moves between the coverage areas of different base stations and communication generations, ”he said.

In the near future, velcom will continue developing its 3G network. Base stations of UMTS-900 standard in Mogilev and Vitebsk regions will be switched on in December. In addition, the specialists will work on increasing network bandwidth and communication quality in specific territories.

This year velcom announced the beginning of a fundamental upgrade of its network and the launch of completely new offers for subscribers based on 3G technology. By the end of November - in less than a year - the modernization was generally completed in most regions of the country. Old network to new range

For velcom, the development of the "new 3G" is associated with the largest-scale technological upgrade of the network over the past decade: the company has replaced the equipment of more than 3.2 thousand base stations. UMTS900 has been added to the 2100 MHz format, which has all the advantages of a low frequency signal, namely a large coverage area and better penetration.

“Construction of a network in this range is still ongoing in the Mogilev and Vitebsk regions. But already now we can say that three-quarters of the country's territory is covered with high-quality third-generation communications, fully debugged. And by the end of the year we will be able to declare that 3G -coverage is even equal to GSM coverage ", - noted Robert Dashyan.

For the company's subscribers, this modernization means the ability to have voice communications in HD-Voice format and mobile Internet in all regions of the country.

According to the company, the development of the "new 3G" has already helped to reduce the digital gap between Minsk and the regions, as well as to improve the quality of communication in large cities. In particular, the indoor-coverage of the 3G network in Minsk has significantly improved. The signal has become more accessible in buildings that are located in lowlands or densely built-up areas. The same applies to areas "closed" or remote from base stations.

"Having built such a network, we were able to launch fundamentally new commercial offers for our subscribers, focused specifically on 3G technology," - said Robert Dashyan.

"Comfortable" tariff and other bonuses

In mid-November, velcom offered its subscribers a new family of "Comfort" tariff plans with a completely free voice call in the 3G network. In addition, this line is distinguished by large volumes of Internet traffic (up to 8 GB), the presence of an SMS notification of its end, as well as the low cost of additional megabytes.

As Robert Dashyan emphasized, "this line of tariffs reflects both new technical capabilities of velcom and the needs of subscribers", and its name "fully reflects the level of service that the company wants to provide to its customers".

"The main component of these tariff plans and our strategy is, of course, a more massive and more comfortable use of mobile Internet,"- explained Robert Dashyan.

The Deputy General Director of velcom drew attention to the worldwide tendency of a rapid growth in the consumption of mobile Internet. "On average, in Belarus, we observe its growth of about 60% year-on-year - and these are not the most record figures when compared with some other countries."- he said. According to the latest statistics from velcom, about 60% of the company's current clients use smartphones, and in certain age groups this figure exceeds 90%.

Velcom decided to facilitate the use of new technologies by subscribers in the new network by exempting them from the monthly fee when purchasing the "popular" smartphone ZTE Blade L110 for 39.90 rubles. "To a certain extent, this is a gift for people who want to join mobile velcom communications or buy new phone", - explained Robert Dashyan.

The company notes that the new offer is unique for Belarus: for the first time, a consumer, purchasing a smartphone, receives communication services free of charge. It is assumed that this will increase the penetration of smartphones and increase the consumption of Internet traffic in the operator's 3G network. "The ZTE Blade L110 smartphone supports the" new 3G "- the UMTS900 format, which means that its owners will be able to enjoy all the advantages of the new communication standard right from the moment of purchase," the company said.

Completion of the velcom network renewal was also the reason for launching a new campaign - the mobile operator decided to provide 50 million minutes and 50 million megabytes to its subscribers free of charge.

The technological level of the updated velcom network today is such that the company is ready to launch LTE throughout the country in a few days if the relevant permission of the regulator is received, Robert Dashyan said.

"Currently, about 2.5 thousand velcom base stations, including the entire antenna-feeder complex, are fully ready for the launch of LTE technology", - noted Robert Dashyan.

According to him, velcom strives for technological neutrality of the network, in which any technology, be it 2G, 3G or 4G, can be activated on the frequencies already used by the company. "In today's situation, to" enable "the 4G format, we only lack the actual permission of the regulator. We can easily do without allocating additional frequencies by the regulator only by reusing existing ones," he remarked.

At the same time, velcom does not plan to connect to the beCloud operator's network, which has a monopoly on 4G. According to Robert Dashyan, the result that the monopolist has demonstrated over four years of operation is "very modest": the quality and volume of BeCloud's LTE network do not yet meet the expectations of subscribers. "If we had the opportunity to do it ourselves, then LTE technology would be available to subscribers throughout the country.", - said a velcom representative.
