Motorola Moto X - Specifications. Motorola Moto X - Specifications Cell Phone Moto X

Yes, I did. Smartphones are not. A very brief history. Motorola Mobility was founded on January 4, 2011 as a result of the division of the American motorola into two independent companies, one of which is called Motorola Solutions, and the other is Motorola Mobility, which was supposed to specialize in the release mobile devices and home appliances. In August 2011, Motorola Mobility was bought by Google, mainly to gain access to Motorola's patent portfolio, which at that time included 25,000 patents and applications.

In October 2014, a deal took place between the Chinese company Lenovo and Google, resulting in full control over Motorola passed into the hands of Lenovo. At the same time, Lenovo's representative in the CIS countries announced that Motorola Mobility smartphones would return to Russia and the CIS countries after a long break. At IFA 2015, Motorola smartphones were presented at the Lenovo booth, but these smartphones, of course, are created by a separate division and have nothing to do with Lenovo smartphones - this is Motorola, which is now controlled by Lenovo. As you can see from the exhibition, Lenovo did not bury Motorola, because there were even more new products than expected. This is top Motorola Moto X Style, the advanced Motorola Moto X Play Pure Edition and simply the Motorola Moto X Play is the third generation of the Moto X Play. Having studied all these three models, I realized that it’s more interesting for me to test the Motorola Moto X Play, although this is not flagship. But the X Play Pure and X Style models have QHD displays, and I have not yet seen a single smartphone (except Samsung Galaxy 6S Edge +, but this is a completely separate conversation), where this permission would be justified enough to close our eyes to the fact that phones with QHD do not live on battery power, just remember the LG G3 and LG G4, amen. But the Moto X Play has a 5.5 "display with an honest FullHD, it has quite decent characteristics (although it is based on a not very productive platform), it has a battery already installed in 3630 mAh (excellent for such a display), well, in it you can use two nanoimages and a memory card at the same time. Take it, take it immediately, I decided - and ordered it on Amazon. By the way, in some countries there are stores called MotoMaker, where you can choose a wide variety of combinations of the design of your smartphone: body color, color of the back cover, color of the back insert, engraving text on the back cover (eg your last name) and even the text (line) that will appear when the device is booted up.

However, there is no such store in Spain, I didn't want to wait for delivery from Germany, so I bought it on the Spanish Amazon, where there were only two options - black and white. And this suits me perfectly, unnecessary decorations are useless. So, Motorola Moto X Play is the third generation of the Moto X smartphone.

Price: 389 € in Europe (16 GB), $ 429 in the States (16 GB) Well, the characteristics are quite interesting. The platform, however, is not the most productive, and for some reason as many as eight cores were crammed into it. (This was done at the request of the Chinese and Qualcomm had to do it, despite the fact that two years ago, Qualcomm Vice President Anand Chardrasecker said that installing eight cores in a mobile processor is like linking eight lawnmowers and claiming that you have an eight-cylinder engine from Ferrari.) In this model, for some reason, some of the sensors were castrated compared to the previous version. There is no thermometer, gravity sensor, barometer or gyroscope. Here is where the gyroscope was removed - it is completely incomprehensible. Save for Pure Edition? But in comparison with the previous version, thank God, they added support for a memory card. For a model with 16 GB on board, it was definitely not enough. Well, I was pleased with the support of two sim cards - this is very important to me. Now let's see how it all works. Contents of delivery They didn't get too smart with the packaging - a simple cardboard box. Well, at least white with a pattern, and not the color of cardboard, many times recycled by the ruthless industry.

Deboxing opened his arms.
Package contents: a smartphone, a USB-microUSB cable, a power adapter with two (thanks for that) outputs, a wired in-ear headset, a clip for pulling out the SIM card and memory card compartment, brochures.
Appearance and features Despite the fact that outwardly the smartphone looks quite traditional, it has certain interesting features. The front is completely covered with glass, which has a thin, almost invisible black plastic edging. Above is the earpiece speaker, below - one sound speaker.

The back of the smartphone looks interesting and quite original. The bottom of the smartphone is all made of metal. There, at first, thin ends begin, somewhere in 1.5 mm, then there is a rather noticeable bevel under the back cover. All this is covered with a removable plastic cover with a Soft Touch coating with a rough pattern, thanks to which the phone is very grippy in the hand. Also on the back there is a metal insert, which can be decorated in different colors when ordering, a recessed camera eye (it is harder to smudge it), a flash and the Motorola logo. The back cover is removable, but this is done only so that you can change the covers of different colors, because the insert for both sim cards and the memory card is pulled out of the case with a paper clip. Here is a smartphone with the cover removed. There is one insert for all three cards: on one side - microSD, on the other - two nanoSIM. The photo shows two sides of one insert.

Despite the fact that it takes some skill to insert the insert with three cards (it must be held with the sim cards up), this procedure is quite simple. At the bottom there is a microUSB port.

On the top, there is an insert for memory cards and an outlet for a headset.
On the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker. They are located side by side, but the power button on the top edge has a special notch - this is a very correct solution, since it is very convenient to grope it without looking. Note that the power button and volume rocker have a slight lateral backlash, which slightly reduces the impression.
With the exception of the buttons, the smartphone makes a very pleasant impression with the quality of materials and workmanship: everything is very solid, looks good, the back cover fits very tightly and under no circumstances creaks. Well, if necessary, you can buy yourself overlays of various colors and from time to time change the style of your smartphone. True, for men this is hardly relevant, although who knows them, metrosexuals ...
Here is our hero, surrounded by Huawei Mate S (very stylish and interesting smartphone, soon to be reviewed) and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Display Contrary to expectations, Motorola installed here not an AMOLED display, as on the previous model, but an IPS-matrix display made using OGS technology (without an air gap). Someone was disappointed, someone, on the contrary, made happy. Personally, I like modern (I emphasize) AMOLED displays, but I prefer these screens on smartphones of the developer - SAMSUNG. Because there are the latest developments, which are often more than impressive. The viewing angles are good here, but the white color becomes noticeably gray when the angles are changed vertically and horizontally. The brightness margin is good, for the daytime mode I set it somewhere around 20-30%. In direct sunlight, the image was readable. The adaptive adjustment worked more or less tolerantly, but traditionally for Android it noticeably slowed down and worked in a kind of abrupt manner. The overall impression of the display is good, but let's say the display is quite normal. Platform This smartphone is based on the budget platform Qualcom Snapdragon 615. Apparently, the main goal of choosing this particular chipset was to reduce costs and increase battery life. It has 8 cores ARM Cortex A53 installed. The essence of installing as many as 8 cores (who needs them at the same time in a smartphone, right?) Is in the separation of processing. 4 cores work at 1.7 GHz - they are engaged in "heavy" calculations. The other 4 cores operate at 1 GHz - they do simple calculations and work in standby mode. As a result, the device turned out to be quite economical - in terms of power consumption. But whether it has enough performance - we'll talk about this a little later. Device operation Almost "pure" Android 5.1.1 is installed here, which is very popular with many users, because there is nothing superfluous and everything can be properly customized. Control is performed using three on-screen buttons: "return", "home" and "list of running applications ".

The position of the buttons, unfortunately, is not regulated in any way. (Personally, I, for example, got used to the fact that the "return" is on the right - like in Samsung phones.) Moreover, usually if there is no "menu" button, then its role is performed by a long press on the "return" or on the "list of running applications ". This is not here. Which is quite inconvenient, because in some programs the menu is hidden far enough, and in certain shells the menu is generally called by launching a separate application. In general, the absence of the on-screen "menu" button (or its call by a long press) I have previously observed only in phones from Sony: in all other cases, the menu could be called. Main desktop.

Second desktop with Google Now.

Applications installed on the system.

Fast switch area. Not customizable.

Lock screen, from where you can also go to the phone application or camera.

By the way, there is one very original solution here. If you pick up a phone lying on a table or in a bag, the time and the unlock icon appear on its display on a black background. If you unlock the phone with a gesture across the screen, then the lock window is no longer displayed to you (if the unlocking is set there by a gesture). Thus, you can turn on the screen with one gesture without pressing the power button. For LG and Sony, of course, tapping on the screen is even more convenient, but the Moto X is also quite functional. In the applications window, the top line of icons is reserved for the last used applications - this is convenient.

The smartphone supports data migration via NFC. I checked - it works, but since application settings are not transferred at the same time, it is easier to drive in your account and restore from "My applications" to Google play what you need. (I already have a hand full of this, I almost weekly tune some new phone for myself.)

I have a model with 16GB of internal storage. The user has about 8 GB available. But there is also support for a memory card, so no problem.

Phone app Incoming call. The subscriber's photo is displayed almost on the whole screen, but for some reason it is heavily shaded.

During a conversation, when the photo is no longer needed, it is shown normally.

To quality telephone connection no complaints - the sound is clear enough, the subscribers heard me well. Test mobile internet.

For these testing conditions (here the connection is not particularly good) - the speeds are actually maximum. I tested the device on good 4G (in Barcelona) - at times it showed as much as 50 megabits. Internet test through my home WiFi - actually the maximum.

MusicThe sound through the built-in speaker is not bad: quite clear, with a good volume level. Nothing rattles during playback.

The sound through the earbuds (Huawei Ultimo Power ANC Earphone) is a solid four: voluminous, high-quality, clean. Very good highs and quite decent bass for plugs. The sound through headphones-ear pads ( Plantronics BackBeat Pro in wired mode) is also very good: spacious, clear, crisp and deep bass, quite decent highs. So, in my opinion, you can easily listen to music on this smartphone. Video This smartphone plays 4K videos with a slight slowdown and periodic disconnection of the audio track.

FullHD is reproduced almost without brakes, but smoothness is still lacking. At 720p, everything is visually fine.

GPS It catches satellites very quickly, determines coordinates steadily. The specification does not indicate the presence of GLONASS, but judging by the number of satellites, GLONASS is also there.

I checked - and for sure: there they are, 6 Russian satellites.

Games Not the most productive platform for gaming, but 3D games run well - at medium picture quality settings.

Interestingly, even on Asphalt 8, the back cover of the smartphone did not heat up at all. And it got hot, and often very strongly, in almost all other smartphones that I had on tests. System settings Regular androids with minor additions.

Setting up two sim cards.

You can turn on some kind of emergency notifications. As I understand it, notifications of some American services in Russia will be irrelevant.

Customize the display of colors.

Adjusting the font size is very important for many.

You can add other users: they will not have access to your media data, and you can also prevent them from making calls.

System information and performance CPU-Z data.

AnTuTu Benchmark didn't work for me here: the smartphone rebooted in about the first third of the tests. Here are the rest of the tests.

Interestingly, on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the PC Mark gave 4010 on the same test. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge + has 5159. Yes, it can be seen that the system is not the most productive, but this has obvious advantages: no heating (for some smartphones this is a real problem) and a good balance of power consumption. Lags (lags) are clearly visible visually enough seldom. Eldar Murtazin complained to me that this model supposedly lags - I did not notice it. I had practically no complaints about the performance. I turned on the built-in tool for displaying graphics of the GPU's operating time - well, yes, sometimes frames are drawn for longer than 16 milliseconds (this is the green line on the graph), but purely visually, this is almost invisible. obviously there is a constant lag from 60 frames per second, but this does not mean that the video slows down. It just doesn't show smoothly enough.

At 720p, there are also many peaks beyond 16 milliseconds, but there, by eye, everything is reproduced very smoothly and very smoothly.

Camera The interface is very simple. In normal mode, shooting is performed by touching your finger anywhere on the screen, but the focus is focused strictly in the center - this is very, very correct!

By swiping from left to right, an arched bar with setting icons appears.

There is a very interesting mode, where you can point the focus point with your finger (and then it will be in the specified place until you move the pointer to another place), and in the same place you can manually adjust the brightness (exposure) of the image.

I really liked how the camera was made here - everything is very thought out and convenient. Well, according to the results of the shooting, she did not disappoint. Here are some examples (all clickable) Below a couple of frames are slightly overexposed - but I was playing with manual adjustments.

Text capture test.

Selfie with front camera.

Well, completely in the dark. The camera ISO limited at 1600, but at 1600 the "noise" is already very strong. However, this is a smartphone, you can't go anywhere.

And a couple of video examples.

Well, what can I say? In my opinion, the camera is very decent. With focus rarely misses (although I always try to make 2-3 frames of one scene on smartphones - to avoid), the white balance exposes well (although it sometimes "floats" a little). Good detail, very good colors. The video also seems to shoot quite well. Battery life A solid battery capacity - as much as 3630 mAh, - an economical chipset, a normal display resolution: I expected the battery life to be at least good, which I did. the Internet... Brightness without auto light is set to a comfortable 30%. All wireless networks are enabled, the browser page refreshes every 30 seconds. Almost exactly 11 o'clock. Pretty well. Video... The screen is set to a comfortable 12 brightness level of the player (maximum - 15), the auto-backlight is disabled, the "Airplane" mode is on, a TV series with hardware decoding is spinning in MX Player in a loop. 13 hours 7 minutes is very good. Synthetic test... At a comfortable screen brightness and with wireless connections turned on, PC Mark tested mixed modes: surfing, processing photos, videos, reading, and so on - that is, emulating a good smartphone load with various standard actions. It turned out 9 hours 40 minutes - a very good indicator. In my usual mode of use, the smartphone lived for two days. That is, if you forget to charge it at night, he worked quietly all day long and lived until the evening. In economical mode, when all unnecessary funds were automatically cut off and there was no auto-sync, it lived normally for 3-4 days. The smartphone supports fast charging: from the bundled or compatible with Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, it charges from zero to 100% in about an hour and forty-five minutes ... Observations at work and conclusions During operation, the smartphone behaved very stable. There were no surprises at all. The platform here, as I already wrote, is of average performance, but purely practically everything works fast enough, while this is one of the "coldest" smartphones I have ever had (it did not heat up even when working 3D -games and serious tests), and its energy consumption is very economical. In my opinion, this is one of the most balanced smartphones, and in almost all respects: characteristics, quality, equipment (two SIM cards and memory card), sound, power consumption, camera, price. I even consider it as a candidate for my main smartphone: the above set of characteristics, including two sim cards, is captivating, which is very important to me. However, after I picked up the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +, which actually produces a WOW effect, it is difficult for me to assume that I can refuse the S6 edge + (for all its shortcomings in the form of one SIM card and the absence of a memory card) in favor of something or else. But, by the way, it is more than twice as expensive as this smartphone.

It is highly respected by advanced users, first of all, for its low price and high quality. The company's smartphones are still produced with the original design and have a number of interesting features whether it is long battery life, indestructible body, Activity Display function or chic multimedia capabilities. At the same time, the developer practically does not litter stock Android in any way and quickly updates even old models to the very latest version... The Moto X Play smartphone is no exception to these rules.

The novelty looks expensive and stylish. This is largely due to the use of an ultra-clear and high-quality screen, covered with mineral glass. The smartphone received an original body with interchangeable back panels. The manufacturer also claims a long battery life and a functional main camera with a resolution of 21 megapixels. The device has support for all modern wireless services, including LTE cat.4, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC.

Instructions

Warranty card

The appearance and dimensions of the Moto X Play are typical for most existing 5.5-inch tablet phones. Nevertheless, the device is rather large for its class. Apparently, this is due to the presence of a capacious battery. The dimensions of the smartphone are 148x75x8.9-10.9 mm, the weight is 169 grams.

It is convenient to hold the phone in your hands. The rubberized surface of the back cover does not allow the device to slip out of hands.

It can be difficult to carry the phablet in the pockets of tight clothing. You can't just sit down and get up. You need to position the device so that it does not hinder movement. Meanwhile, there are no such features in loose clothing.

Design and appearance

id = "sub2">

Outwardly, Moto X Play differs from smartphones from other manufacturers. The body is made of hard plastic that looks like metal. The material looks durable. The back of the device is curved, so the size is indicated both in the thinnest part and in the middle, where the thickening is maximal.

The back is removable. Includes two additional panels. I had a black version, and included a blue and purple panel. The lid has a relief pattern similar in tactile sensations to the rubberized surface. Thanks to the material, the smartphone fits comfortably in the hand and even if you take it with wet hands, it will not slip out.

On the back of the gadget there is a recess with the company logo placed in it. When you hold the device in your hands, your finger lies in it, it is convenient.

The assembly is of high quality. During two weeks of testing as the main phone, I did not find any squeaks or gaps.

The Moto X Play's body and components are treated with a water-repellent liquid. The developer declares compliance with the IP52 standard. This means that the smartphone cannot be heated, but it must withstand a heavy downpour.

In Motorola, for some countries, it is possible to customize the phone for yourself. To do this, you need to use the special utility MOTOMaker. You choose the color of the body, panels and design. However, this service is not available in Russia. By default, Moto X Play comes in two colors - white and black.

As for the placement of individual elements, almost the entire front of the device is occupied by a touchscreen display with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Above the display are located: proximity and light sensors, a slot for the earpiece and a front camera lens. There is a speaker under the screen for playing calls and music. It provides sufficient volume for calls and system messages, it will be enough for watching videos or listening to music. The sound is clear and distinct.

Around the perimeter of the front side there is a plastic rim slightly protruding above the protective glass. It protects the screen from scratches. The protective Gorilla Glass 3 has a good quality oleophobic coating. Trash and dirt are almost invisible.

The control buttons are located on the right side, and to make it easier to find them blindly, the volume control button is smooth, and the switches are with vertical notches.

The phone has two microphones and a noise cancellation system that improves the quality of voice transmission. Microphones are located at the ends. Also on the upper edge of the device you can see a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and next to it is a slot for nanoSIM-sized SIM cards and a card microSD memory... On one side of the tray, you can insert one or two SIM cards, on the other side - a memory card. It's quite convenient. The microUSB connector is located at the bottom.

On the back of the smartphone there is a main 21 Mpix camera lens with autofocus and LED flash. The camera block protrudes slightly on the surface. The area around the lens is made of durable plastic. In which case, she will take the brunt of the blow and protect the lens.

Screen. Graphics capabilities

id = "sub3">

The diagonal of the Moto X Play screen is 5.5 inches at a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels (403 ppi). The frames are quite narrow. The screen is made using IPS technology.

The image is very clear and detailed, there are no problems with small fonts. As for the colors, they are very bright. It is annoying in places, but users like bright pictures. The viewing angles are maximum here. When deviating from the normal, the colors do not fade or change their tone. There are anti-reflective and oleophobic coating. The display is easy to read in the sun, and fingerprints on the protective glass are weak. The viewing angles are maximum.

The multitouch technology here allows you to process 10 simultaneous touches. When the smartphone is brought to your ear, the display is locked using a proximity sensor.

The ambient light sensor correctly detects the backlight, however, sometimes it does not do it as quickly as we would like. In which case, you can turn off the automation and set your own backlight brightness option.

The Moto X Play's screen comes across as very high quality and on par with the best in its class. It is comfortable to watch movies, photos, multimedia presentations on it.

Hardware platform: processor, memory, speed

id = "sub4">

Moto X Play is equipped with an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 processor (4 x Cortex-A53 1.7 GHz + 4 x Cortex-A53 1.0 GHz), graphics coprocessor Adreno 405. RAM 2 GB. The built-in memory in the device is 16 GB (8 GB is available to the user). You can expand this volume using microSD cards up to 128 GB.

The performance of the used chip is average. Often there are slowdowns in the interface. Third-party programs don't always open quickly. There are slowdowns in the menu, for example, in the list of SMS or calls. This is worth remembering. The Moto X Play is far from flagships.

The pluses of the hardware include relatively low power consumption. This has the most positive effect on battery life.

Communication capabilities

id = "sub5">

The smartphone supports all modern networks mobile communication: both 2G, 3G and 4G, including all frequencies used in Russia. The phone worked without any problems with test SIM cards of MTS, MegaFon, Tele2.

The device confidently receives the signal and does not lose it for no apparent reason. It's comfortable to talk on the phone. The speaker volume is high. In noisy conditions, you can not be afraid to talk. The interlocutor will be heard, and the interlocutor will hear you.

The device has two slots for nanoSIM, but there is only one radio module. You cannot talk on two numbers at the same time. The restriction is common.

The device can work with all modern wireless networks. Among them are dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n, Wi-Fi Direct, you can organize a wireless access point via wi-Fi channels or bluetooth. There is a built-in LTE modem and NFC. Connection to a computer is carried out using a USB 2.0 connector.

Additional communication means are GPS, A-GPS (standard Google Maps is built into the smartphone). The radius of navigation error during testing is about 5 meters, which is very small. The gadget does a good job of being a navigator.

Duration of work

id = "sub6">

The Moto X Play has a 3630mAh Li-ion battery. With a usage model that includes about half an hour of calls a day, periodic correspondence in social networks and instant messengers, email synchronization enabled, geolocation only via Wi-Fi and 10-15 pictures, the smartphone worked for 3 days. In testing conditions with the number of calls 35-40 minutes a day, browsing the Internet for about 2 hours via 4G, listening to an mp3 player through a headset for about 2 hours a day, the device worked for about 2 days. When watching a video, the smartphone worked for 8 hours, in navigator mode - about 5 hours. If you use the device as a dialer, then on a single charge it will last 5 days, and maybe even more.

The Moto X Play's battery life is impressive. This is one of the most tenacious devices that can be found on sale.

In addition, it uses TurboCharger technology (similar to Qualcomm's QuickCharge or Samsung's Fast Adaptive Charge), with which the battery can be fully charged in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The smartphone has a power saving mode. In this scenario, the operating time will increase by at least 20%. In addition, you can activate the shutdown of the device on a schedule at night. It will also have a positive impact on battery life.

User interface and operating system

id = "sub7">

The smartphone runs Android 6.0 with an identical reference OS. The changes are extremely minor. The menu organization is familiar to Android.

I can attribute the Activity Display function to the peculiarities of work. It shows event notifications and time on the locked screen of your smartphone. Due to this, the Moto X Play dispenses with even a notification indicator on the front panel. You take your smartphone out of your pocket or take it off the table, and the time, date and number of missed notifications are displayed on the display for 2-3 seconds. The function is tied to the movement of the mobile phone in space. Such automation works, by the way, perfectly, but it cannot do without false alarms. I liked this feature.

In addition to the Activity Display mode, the Moto X Play software differs from the reference Android 6 with the redrawn "Galleries". In addition, there was a program for connecting with smart watch and an advanced voice assistant "Moto Voice", which, however, does not support Russian.

Music and video viewing

id = "sub8">

The smartphone uses a standard player to play music. If you wish, you can install any other application, this is Android. On the plus side is the built-in FM radio application.

As for the sound quality, everything is in order. When paired with quality headphones, you get great sound. The package does not include a headset. Thanks to the 3.5 mm jack, you can pick up any headphones.

Camera and video filming

id = "sub9">

The Moto X Play has two cameras. The main one is 21 megapixels with aperture f / 2.0 (model IMX230). It fits neatly into the body, barely protruding above the surface. A focusing system and a dual flash are located under the lens. The camera shoots well, but not perfect. In difficult lighting, at twilight, the photos are not bad, but the same Samsungs shoot much better. In HDR mode, pictures are not always sharp.

Besides automatic mode manual settings are also provided. To do this, Motorola used its proprietary camera application. I honestly did not like it. The settings are meager and incomprehensible from the point of view of logic. For example, by default, you cannot set dynamic focus. Instead, when you touch an object, the picture is taken. Autofocus works slowly, often fails and focuses on the wrong subjects.

The maximum video quality is FullHD, 30 frames per second. Focusing here also fails, often the picture is blurred when you move the camera or she thinks that such a movement has occurred.

The front camera is five megapixels and does a good job with video calls and selfies.

Outcome

id = "sub10">

Of course, Moto X Play looks like an interesting option among the large number of 5.5-inch smartphones. Great screen, good daylight camera that captures decent shots and outperforms almost every competitor in its class. And most importantly, it has a long battery life.

But the device also has disadvantages, which include not the fastest chip and camera interface and very slow focus.

Considering that you can find many Chinese smartphones on sale with similar characteristics (the same), but at a lower price, buying the Moto X Play does not seem justified. If only Moto was sold for at least 25,000 rubles! Then there would be no price for him!

Benefits

Great screen

Support for two SIM cards

High-quality assembly

Very long battery life

disadvantages

Not the fastest chip

Average quality camera

On the day of publication of this test review, a Moto X Play with 16 GB of internal memory could be purchased for 29,990 rubles.

Despite the relative simplicity of the design of modern Motorola smartphones, it is unique and easily recognizable. Two wide speaker slots on the bezel, rounded corners and back panel, and, of course, a vertical strip with a camera lens, LED flash and a stylized letter M - these are the main distinctive features Moto devices. All four Motorola smartphones, recently presented in Russia, are made in this style, and outwardly differ only in the size and number of sensors on the front panel. Have Moto X Style There are a lot of them, which is especially noticeable on the white color, so if the accumulation of circles and ovals around the top speaker seems ridiculous to you, it is better to choose the black option. Others, apparently, are not foreseen - the Moto Maker service, which allows you to independently choose the colors of each main element and the material of the back panel, is still not available in Russia. Those wishing to get their hands on the Moto X Style with a wooden or leather back will still have to order a smartphone from overseas.

However, we also liked the standard materials very much. The display is protected by glass Gorilla Glass 3, and water-repellent coating provides some protection against splashes and drops. Rubberized back panel pleasant to the touch and does not tend to slip out of hands, but metal frame noticeably strengthens the structure - the smartphone perfectly resists bending. Here, however, its thickness also plays a role, varying 7.5 to 11.1 mm... Motorola once again refuses to sacrifice functionality and durability for the sake of record subtlety, and this is good news. Of course, thin devices like the Huawei Mate S (7.2 mm) seem more elegant, but the Moto X Style is still calmer in the jeans pocket. The only disappointment is that with such dimensions, Motorola didn't bother to make the battery removable, and the back panel is firmly attached. (Nano-SIM and microSD cards are inserted in the tray in the common slot on the top edge.)

Speaking of dimensions: despite the 5.7-inch display and rather large speakers, the smartphone is even shorter and narrower than the 5.5-inch Apple iPhone 6S Plus and is only an inch longer than the 5-inch Htc one M9. The sound, although not as high quality as that of hTC flagshipbut still very loud and clear, even with hints of bass. Unfortunately, the complaints of many buyers about the top speaker turned out to be quite justified, it really wheezes slightly when listening to music at high volumes. But just that slightly: if you don't hold the device close to your ear (and you definitely shouldn't do this at high volume), it is almost impossible to hear the defect. If your player has an equalizer, you can try reducing the bass slightly. For hands-free communication, only the bottom speaker is used, so during a phone or Skype conversation, the problem disappears altogether.

Therefore, it makes sense to consider a Chinese metal phablet. There are several fundamental "chips" in Meizu MX5 - high quality sound (dedicated audio chip contributes), a redesigned Android beyond recognition and a fast processor in everything but games. In terms of the quality of the body and the autonomy of the "Chinese" is inferior to Motorola and Samsung, in terms of power - it surpasses them, in the quality of cameras and display - is approximately equal.

The main problems of the model are the "curve" adaptation for Russia, as a result of which the smartphone cannot work with the vast majority of 4G networks in the country. In order not to get into trouble with "only 3G", it will not be superfluous to check if the Chinese exotic is compatible specifically with your telecom operator.

conclusions

* In the voice of Zadornov *. "Get ready - there will be a strange phrase now." And the thing is that the dull results of Moto X Play in benchmarks did not spoil the impression of our hero. From the lips of a reviewer who only does something that turns gadgets in tests, it sounds unusual, but in fact our Motorola remains a pleasant smartphone to use, even with the power of the "back to back".

Because X Play carefully throws information every time you take it out of your pocket; because its body is seriously different from the vulgar metal and glass competitors, and at the same time it feels even more expensive. Because the display is of high quality and at the same time does without poisonous colors, and the autonomy is such that you can walk with two SIM cards and not "bathe".

But, of course, there are also contraindications - the smartphone is very massive, well-fed, and in cloudy weather and at night the camera works stupidly. Games X Play plays with difficulty, even at medium graphics details, and in the operating room the lack of power is compensated with varying degrees of success by perfectly "polished" Android.

Moto X Play is not a geek device. It's just a nice-to-use alternative to Korean and Chinese pop, one of the most solidly built and durable phablets available today. Anyone looking for a "normal smartphone" with good battery life and body is recommended. But for more demanding Motorola fans, it makes sense to wait for Lenovo-Moto co-production models - the Chinese promise to present such smartphones by the end of 2016.

Positioning

By the third generation Moto X has increased in size and at the same time multiplied, now it is not one, but three models with the prefix Play, Style, Pure. The difference between them is huge, starting with the diagonal of the screen and its resolution and ending with the amount of RAM, the size of the battery and the processor. The youngest device in the lineup is Moto X Play, the possibilities of which we will talk about in this review. The text will definitely contain a comparison of these models, but for now I want to focus on the positioning of the Moto X Play, which is becoming the most affordable model in the family of software minimum price from 299 euros and more.

The idea of Moto X has always been simple and close to the consumer: for three kopecks (three hundred in our case) to get a phone that, if it is inferior to flagships costing two or two and a half times more, is not much. In short, a device that looks good, has a high-quality performance, a decent camera. A kind of workhorse with a nice design, good body materials and decent performance.

2014 Motorola MOTO X

If in 2014 the Moto X model differed in dimensions typical for flagships, and the screen diagonal was 5.2 inches, then in 2015 Motorola decided to go a little further and make a model with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Despite the same name, we have a fundamentally different device, it has imperceptibly moved from the segment of phones to the segment of phablets and here, in terms of price / quality ratio, it offers one of the best options for buying. A distinctive feature of the entire line of phones from Motorola is a favorable price and the presence of its own chips that improve the perception of devices, put them on a par with the best solutions other companies. But for those who already own the Moto X of previous generations, the novelty may seem too big, not on hand. There is a feeling that the company wanted to improve many parameters, but decided to focus on the screen diagonal as one of the most understandable and familiar characteristics for the consumer. Unwittingly, the cheaper Moto G model is replacing the Moto X of 2014, and all devices with the X index have turned into phablets.

Perhaps it is important to make one digression here. If you don't have a compact phone, you are used to large devices, then the new Moto X will have to come to the court, it is not at all as gigantic as it might seem. But the dimensions are larger than those of 5-inch models, and this should be borne in mind, especially if you want to buy a phone in absentia, it is worth weighing the pros and cons many times over.

Talking about Moto X Play, it should be noted that this is one of the most interesting phones in terms of price, although it is not without certain drawbacks and compromises that the manufacturer was forced to make. However, let's take a closer look, especially since I used the device for a month as my main phone.

Design, dimensions, controls

Motorola usually gives you the opportunity to customize the phone for yourself and your ideas about beauty, for this you can use a special utility MOTOMaker, you choose the color of the case, panels and design. By default, Play comes in two colors - white and black.

Deep customization is not provided for this model, especially since it is supplied only to a number of European countries, Asia. For example, it is available in India and absent in the United States, where its place is taken by the previous apparatus. Therefore, if you expected that, as before, it will be possible to choose a bamboo back panel, then you should forget about it.

Back panel made removable, which allows us to hope that it will be possible to find various options for additional panels on sale. Interestingly, the case is not separable and the opening of the panel has only one function - to change the appearance of the device.

I really like the way the panels are designed in Motorola, this device is no exception. The diamond-shaped pattern, the rubber panel to the touch, does not slip in the hands and is tactilely pleasant. This device, according to the sensations in the hand, can give odds to many other models, especially since they are much more expensive.

Compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 5

The body is curved, so the size is indicated both at the thinnest part and in the middle, where the thickening is greatest. Dimensions - 148x75x8.9-10.9 mm, weight - 169 grams. Fits perfectly in the hand, weighty, you can get it out of your pocket without looking.

On the back there is a recess with the company logo. When you hold the device in your hands, your finger lies in it, it is convenient. There is an on / off button on the right side, it is ribbed and easy to feel without looking at the phone. Below is a paired volume key.

The case materials are typical for a product of this class - they are plastic, there is no metal in the phone. The frame around the body looks like a metal, but it is plastic painted in the mass, which is quite scratch-resistant. There is nothing wrong with the fact that there is no metal frame, I do not see, the structure is reliable enough and can withstand falls. The screen is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The phone has two microphones, a noise cancellation system, it works perfectly. Microphones are located at the ends. Also at the top you can see a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and next to it is a slot for SIM-cards and memory cards. The design of the holder is rather curious: on the one side you can insert one or two SIM-cards, on the other - a memory card. The fact that memory cards have appeared can be considered progress. Those who buy the European version of the phone for one nanoSIM card can easily upgrade it to proprietary software with support for two cards, and the cap must be removed, and you will have a full-fledged connector. In short, you can get a full-fledged device for two SIM-cards cheap and cheerful, but only the radio module, as it was, will remain one. You should also think about what LTE frequencies you need, it is possible that the game is not worth the candle and activating the second card when flashing is an unnecessary hassle.

The microUSB connector is located at the bottom, everything is standard here.

Now a few words about Activity Display, in the previous model on the front panel, in addition to the light sensor, there were also IR sensors that sensed that you bring your hand to the screen, and included icons on it, with which you could quickly open the application or rewind music. The icons remained here, but the sensors themselves were removed. Now icons are displayed as soon as you touch the phone, their activation is tied to movement.

Unfortunately, this leads to false positives in the car, often the screen turns on when the phone just bounces on bumps, on the table it can also sometimes react to trembling. Less useful in this mode than we would like.

The phone lacks an LED indicator, which is also a sign of a budget solution. Finally, it remains to say that Motorola has treated the body and components of the device with a water-repellent liquid, it meets the IP52 standard. It is impossible to heat, but he must calmly withstand a heavy downpour.

Externally, the front panel is designed so that it seems that there are two speakers. So, however, it is. But when playing music, only the lower speaker works, the upper one only during calls. There is nothing wrong with that, since the speaker volume is very high, the sound is clear and clearly distinguishable. Repeatedly we sang to this phone in the car, playing music through the speaker.

Build quality, protection against water (albeit additional) - all this sets the device apart from the mass of other models. The manufacturer can be praised for the appearance and characteristics, he managed to make an interesting model.

Display

While every manufacturer tries to put on flagship models SuperAMOLED-screen, here we are waiting for a normal, but very high-quality IPS-display. With a diagonal of 5.5 inches, the resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels is an excellent offer for a phone of this price group. The quality of the screen is beyond praise: a smooth picture, the brightness can be adjusted automatically and it works well. The screen remains readable in the sun, the picture is clearly visible. The viewing angles are maximum. Whatever one may say, but this screen gives the impression of very high quality and at the level of the best samples in its class. It is possible that it lacks a little brightness, but this is a profitable business, you quickly get used to the level of the device.

It is comfortable to watch movies on it, it allows both diagonal and resolution. In short, this device can be praised for the screen for a long time. Fingerprints remain visible despite the oleophobic coating.

Battery

The characteristics of the built-in Li-Ion battery are as follows: 3630 mAh, full time charge with a complete charger - about 3.5 hours. But the phone has TurboCharger technology (similar to Qualcomm's QuickCharge or Samsung's Fast Adaptive Charge), with which the battery can be fully charged in about an hour and twenty minutes. Agree that support for this technology is a huge plus, only you have to buy a charger separately. I checked the fast charging from Samsung with the phone, it works without any problems.

The manufacturer claims that the phone can work up to 48 hours in mixed mode, that is, with active use, it will last for two days. The impressions in the first week of using the device were not so rosy, the battery ran out within a day, and the screen time was about 3.5-4 hours, which cannot be called a record. And other tasks that would have a negative impact on the working time were not performed. I wondered why other users had completely different results.

On the sixth day, a miracle happened, the phone suddenly started working on its own and without any changes in the settings much longer. You can look at the results below, but on average it is always two days with 5-6 hours of screen operation (the backlight is at an average level), a fairly large amount of transmitted data. I would like to remind you that in the GSam program some data is displayed crookedly and does not match the built-in utility, so you should give preference to it if the data diverges.

The resulting operating time can be safely called very good. For comparison, my Note 5 / EDGE + in the same modes live about 1.5 times less time (they have a brighter backlight, higher screen resolution and a smaller battery, but they still live noticeably less). Of modern LTE smartphones, this model can be safely called one of the longest-lived, especially since the battery in Pure / Style is smaller, as well as the operating time. That is, the younger model also wins in terms of operating time, which is not bad.

Memory, RAM, chipset and performance

The phone has 2 GB of RAM, which can be considered the golden mean for such devices, which is not a little, but not a lot either. The internal memory can be selected from 16 or 32 GB, but there is also support for microSD memory cards up to 128 GB. This is a big plus for the device, especially against the background of the fact that the same Samsung refuses memory cards in many models.

The chipset inside the phone is Snapdragon 615, 1.7 GHz, 8 cores, the Adreno 405 graphics accelerator. The performance of this solution is average, but Motorola has learned to squeeze the maximum possible out of Qualcomm chipsets without increasing power consumption. Take a look at the synthetic test results below.

In practice, not everything is as cloudless as we would like. To begin with, there are often slowdowns in the interface, third-party programs can open slowly, but there can be brakes even when waking up in normal menus, for example, the list of SMS or calls. This is not very annoying, especially if you keep in mind the price of the phone, but it is certainly very far from flagships. Here I can advise a simple thing: evaluate for yourself how critical this moment is for you. There are people who cannot withstand even a millisecond delay, and there are those who simply do not pay attention to it.

USB, Bluetooth, communication capabilities

Version BT 4.0, all profiles are supported, which can be considered a nice feature of the device. Depending on the model number, different frequencies are supported for LTE:

 • LTE band 1 (2100), 3 (1800), 5 (850), 7 (2600), 8 (900), 19 (800), 20 (800), 28 (700), 38 (2600), 41 (2500 ) - XT1562;
 • LTE band 1 (2100), 2 (1900), 3 (1800), 4 (1700/2100), 5 (850), 7 (2600), 8 (900), 12 (700), 17 (700), 28 (700) - XT1563 (SS).

For Wi-Fi there is support for 802.11 a / b / g / n, dual-band 2x2 (MIMO). The phone has NFC, but the USB version is 2.0.

Camera

The front camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, which is quite good for its class. But the main camera is built on Sony IMX230, it is a matrix with a resolution of 21 megapixels (f / 2.0), which corresponds to the best cameras in terms of picture quality in ideal conditions and clearly bypasses almost all models with a similar cost.

In absentia, I was interested in this model precisely for the quality of the camera, I looked through a dozen reviews made by American publications, and I desired this device more than ever and no phone before. Even before I saw the phone, I had a strong impression that the camera is something and it can shoot at least as well as the flagships from Samsung.

The first disappointment was that Motorola used its own proprietary camera application, which can be considered very, very poor in ergonomics.

For example, by default, you cannot focus on an object by touching the screen, for this you need to turn on the appropriate mode, then exposure compensation will appear. This is not just inconvenient, it is a lopsided implementation that cannot be justified in any way.

The camera module uses 192 phase focus sensors, which in theory makes autofocus operation fast and hassle-free. Keyword - in theory. Autofocus works slowly, often fails and focuses on the wrong subjects. Indoors, the camera blurs the picture, there is not enough sensor sensitivity. Look at two pictures taken almost at once, in one the camera grabbed the picture, and in the other it typically blurred it.

In ideal conditions, when you have even, bright sunlight, there are no drops in contrast, the camera in Moto X shoots at the level of the best cameras from other manufacturers. But as soon as the lighting conditions deteriorate, write wasted. For example, photographing a sunset and not getting porridge at the exit is an almost impossible task.

Moto X Play Galaxy EDGE +

To show the difference in the quality of the pictures, I took them with this camera and Samsung EDGE+ I think the pictures speak for themselves.

Moto X Play Galaxy EDGE +

And here are some photos in different places taken with the Moto X Play camera.

The camera can also automatically read barcodes (an option appeared with an update to the camera application). But it is unlikely that many will need this opportunity.

Software features, or almost pure Android

This is almost pure Android, which Motorola hasn't changed much. Version 5.1.1, 6.0 should appear in October. This will be one of the first 6.0 devices, apart from the new Nexus.

The organization of the menu is familiar, repeating the standard android description there is no point.

At the same time, I would like to note that there is a built-in FM radio, it works with headphones, the quality is not bad.

From a multimedia point of view, I liked this device, it plays music well, and comparing it with my classmates of mainly Chinese origin, I prefer it, the sound is reproduced cleaner and better.

The Moto app shows you how to activate the camera with a wrist movement, how you can record a voice tag to activate your phone, and also introduces you to night mode.

Some applications have been redesigned, for example, a gallery or creating multimedia cuts from videos and photos that you receive automatically.

But nothing that would be worth talking about as a new and additional quality for our familiar Android.

During the month of using the phone, I caught errors several times in standard applications, for example, I got Google maps.

There weren't many such small problems, they appeared sometimes, but in general they did happen. This is also worth knowing so as not to expect perfect performance from the device. But I can't call it raw either. I get the feeling that some errors are related to the absence of a number of sensors (gyroscope, magnetometer, and so on) and traces of their use in Motorola's software. I think that with the new firmware, the stability of the device will increase, today it is already at a good level and there are no noticeable problems, there are minor and annoying flaws that do not spoil the overall impression.

Impression

The ringtone volume is excellent, you can hear it from the jacket and inside pockets. The vibration alert is average, not always felt. The quality of speech transmission is good, but here you need to remember one thing - in which country and which model you are purchasing. For example, my phone was bought in Germany and it is for Europe. There were no problems with it in Moscow networks, but the device, which is similar in characteristics, but came from India, showed a much worse result, lost the network and behaved ugly. As far as I know, after flashing to European software, all problems disappeared.

In roaming in the UK, my phone sometimes behaved strangely, lost the 4G network, connected to it with restrictions (data transmission was disabled). During a conversation in roaming, the connection was often cut off. In my home network in Moscow, nothing of the kind was observed even remotely, everything worked like a clock.

Considering that the cost of this device is 299 euros excluding taxes in Germany, it can be delivered with delivery in Russia for 24 thousand rubles, that's how I purchased the device. There is nothing in this class on the Russian market and there is nothing even close to such characteristics. In terms of price / quality ratio, Moto X Play bypasses most of the devices from large companies, however, it also does this with manufacturers from China. This phablet is often compared to the OnePlus Two, but even worse is the camera, battery, controversial chipset, but a comparable screen and, in theory, the invitation price is equal to that of the Moto X.

In practice, there is no memory card, the price of dealers is at the level of 30 thousand rubles. This is in every sense a bad purchase, and the model is very controversial.

For those looking for a cheap and productive phablet, you can look at Idol 3 5.5, at a price of about 19 thousand rubles, it gives an excellent price / quality ratio. But this is a lower class product, it has a worse camera, two speakers are quieter than the one in Moto X.

Motorola is a very good workhorse. Great screen, great daylight camera that captures decent shots and outperforms almost every competitor in its class. And most importantly, it's a long battery life and a quick delivery of Android 6 over the air. The model turned out to be interesting, and it is worth paying close attention to it. In a crisis this is an excellent offer, a kind of golden mean, the device will definitely last for a couple of years of use. And he's just nice on the outside.

Now, just a few words about how the Style / Pure version differs from the usual Play. Screen size - 5.7 inches with QHD resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, 3 GB of RAM, 3000 mAh battery instead of 3630 mAh, stereo speakers instead of one mono. As you can see, the differences are quite serious and allow us to consider this device as another model. But the price is at least one hundred euros higher, and in some countries the difference is even greater. Moto Review We will try to prepare X Style / Pure later.
