    1) The screen is just great. Auto brightness control works excellently - you can see everything in any light, and the charge is not wasted so much. The brightness is enough even in bright sun. 2) Design - it looks quite stylish and strict (I have black color + Flip Wallet case). Finally, metal has been added. Although the frame is nice 3) Speed - everything flies, there are slowdowns, but very rare (you can not even take into account) 4) the TouchWiz shell is very nothing, I have it for the first time 5) S-pen stylus: quite a handy thing, a lot of different functions, delight all kinds of drawing. I often indulge in handwriting input. And yes, the pen is quite improved compared to the 3 raccoon (reacts to a light touch, whereas on the 3 raccoon it was necessary to press hard) 6) A large number of of all kinds of sensors, undoubtedly, pleases. In this

A metal frame, a pleasant weight that does not allow you to slip out of your hands, a really good camera and all sorts of modes in it .. and subsequent photo processing ... a functional stylus - necessary thing for me, an incomparable screen, clarity of text, very smart, holds the battery for a long time .. etc and so on .... In general, for 2 months of use, I have not found any complaints yet. A year later, too. !!! an excellent multifunctional gadget, just a lifesaver. I haven't seen the best yet, perhaps Galaxy Note 5, there the stylus pops up by pressing - a cool function, because in Note 4 you pick it up with your fingernail to pull it out, but oh well, not for that kind of money ..... Photo, video - in comparison with what friends are shooting, or colleagues - heaven and earth. The DSLR in my everyday life is no longer in demand ... The stylus is not a replacement

changed the review, correcting it to five. In the shortcomings, I first indicated that it does not pick up 4G after disconnecting from Wi-Fi. So: it turned out to be a case. I put my own back cover - everything instantly flew. Then I just wiped the contacts with a dry cloth at the cover (s-view, book, with the replacement of the back cover)) - and again everything worked fine. I am pleased))

    No waterproof
    - many preinstalled applications, cannot be deleted without ... well, you get the idea)
    - no radio ... well, how is that (
    UPD:
    - USB 2.0, although the previous version had USB 3.0
    - no start of the camera with a separate button
    - I don't like the default shell, changed to Go Louncher in it, you can sort the programs by purpose and display more icons on the screen

This is not even a drawback, but rather a kind of bewilderment that after so many brains invested in functionality, the elementary trifles for users have not been thought out.
    - In Contacts, if the position or company name is too long, then it does not fit on the screen. To this HUGE screen! On the iPhone, the company name is automatically highlighted in bold, and the position is wrapped in words as many lines as needed - you open a contact and you can see everything at once!
    - When the screen is darkened, before turning it off, if you touch the screen so that it doesn’t go out, then the function that you accidentally press is triggered. And I need something so that the screen does not go out! And in the iPhone, this is exactly how it is implemented - the screen dims, touched it, it is bright again and nothing started from pressing.

What do we have from this, on the automatic selection of the 4g / 3g2g AND 3g / 2g network, I constantly lose my connection ...

    1) When the device is tilted more than 55-60 degrees, a purple tint appears (not strong, and it is unlikely that you will look at the screen from such an angle)
    2) The problem with activating the Navitel navigator (it is "supposedly" as a gift for a year) UPD: the problem was solved, everything is activated
    3) As I said, during the day the camera shoots perfectly, but in low light conditions there are small problems (when I shoot a video, it makes a little noise, then when viewing the noise is slightly removed, but still noticeable)
    4) The heart rate and blood oxygen saturation sensors are very sensitive - for correct measurement you need to sit still and not speak)
    5) A couple of problems with SHealth - the pedometer counts the steps correctly, but shows the result not after each step, but after 30-40 steps or when the screen is locked (i.e. 0

They could have made it waterproof - it would have become just a bestseller, but I think this is such a marketing ploy so as not to collapse the sales of the S5. And the price, of course!
A year later, the metal-like paint on the stylus has worn off a bit - in the place where you grab it with your fingernail to pull it out. could have strengthened this place with metal. Already for that money - such trifles as an elementary erasure of paint in the place of greatest friction had to be foreseen !!! At least in the next. the models took this flaw into account ...

Autumn continues to excite fans of mobile devices with new flagships. This time it was the turn of one of the main innovators - the "tablet phone" Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Its predecessor is still relevant and in demand, but the time has come to update the line, which has become an annual tradition.

Having quickly "tested" some ideas on the miniature Galaxy Alpha, which became a kind of herald of innovation, Samsung presented them in a new device. It is curious that at the same time the popular Korean flagship is still far from the sales results of its main competitor - iPhone 6 Plus. It also did not reach the Galaxy Note 3 indicators, lagging behind it by half a million in the first month. Perhaps this did not meet the manufacturer's expectations, but Samsung is betting on the demand for the Galaxy Note 4 for a long time, for which a powerful software and hardware base was laid.

Another factor that may have influenced the number of sales is the initial availability of the new flagship in fewer countries than in the situation with its predecessor. Just a few days ago, Galaxy Note 4 began to be sold in Belarus and Russia. While the interest of the army of fans is warmed up by the impressive characteristics of the device, we will see how it can attract the user to work.

Design

The segment of "tablet phones" has become quite expensive and at the same time in demand on the market mobile devices... The dimensions of such devices are impressive and entail certain peculiarities of use. Each of the manufacturers strives to make working with large devices more convenient. In the case of the Galaxy Note 4, a slight averaging of sizes can be noted both in comparison with its predecessors and in relation to the iPhone 6 Plus. Thus, the dimensions of the device are 153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5 mm and weighs 176 g.

Owners of miniature hands will find it difficult to operate a "tablet-phone". Nevertheless, the device is surprisingly pleasant in the palm of your hand - the body finish is great! The metal frame used in the Galaxy Alpha is also present in the Galaxy Note 4. It has beveled edges, but is painted in the color of the case along the edge, and the paint is very resistant. The manufacturer offers four color options, in our case it turned out to be white. It is noteworthy that the mechanical control buttons are made in the same style: their surfaces are painted in the color of the case, and the edges are shiny with metal. The ends of the body have small recesses on the sides and in every possible way bend around the functional elements around the perimeter.

As before, there are only two control buttons. Their placement is similar to the Galaxy Note 3: the volume rocker on the left side and the power key on the right. This is not to say that they are easier to handle than in the previous model, although the device is the narrowest in the line. But mechanically, the buttons are implemented remarkably, do not stick or play! Rising slightly above the sidewalls, they feel great tactile, and pressing on them is easy to read.

Having undergone external modifications, the functionally the upper end has not changed. It houses a headset jack, microphone and infrared port for control household appliances... By the way, the delivery set includes a very comfortable headset with replaceable ear pads.

At the bottom there are two more microphones, a stylus socket and a microUSB connector. The handle attaches securely to the body and is conveniently removed thanks to the nail recess on the cap, serifs have appeared on its body, and the sensitivity has doubled. The set includes replaceable tips and pliers for their extraction. The USB connector has reverted to the 2.0 standard - a minor step backward. Thanks to wireless technologies data exchange via the wire is losing its relevance, and most consumers use it only for charging.

The front surface of the device is a classic picture for Samsung: there is an event indicator in the left corner, a speaker in the middle, proximity and lighting sensors to the right, and a front camera window in the right corner. The mechanical button with a sensitive fingerprint scanner under the screen and the touch buttons on the sides of it remain unchanged.

The back panel is made of polycarbonate with traditional leather embossing. The solution is, of course, practical, we will not indulge in its discussion. Note that over time, the panel in the white casing can get dirty. Under the panel there is a battery compartment, a microSIM pocket and a microSD card slot. It also makes contact with the antennas to improve their sensitivity.

The main camera block rises above the panel. Below it is an LED flash paired with a heart rate sensor. An interesting and convenient function is implemented here: in order to take a “selfie” with the front camera, you need to place your finger on the sensor for a second and then remove it - and the picture will be taken! The ringer speaker is also located on the rear panel. Its sound is satisfactory and on par with the Galaxy Note 3 - quite loud but shallow.

The "tablet phone" has no protection against dust and moisture, therefore it is not recommended to "bathe" or expose it to other influences.

Display

Screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 - perhaps the best protective glass available today. This decision is due not only to the thickness of the glass, but also to the presence of a special layer - a digitizer from Wacom, which, incidentally, was partially redeemed by Samsung. This combination makes working with the stylus as easy as possible, allowing you to achieve maximum similarity to a pen or pencil, and the increased sensitivity of the screen handles pressing in such a way that you think you are drawing on paper. The sensitivity when working with gloves is even higher than in its predecessors.

The bezel on the sides of the display is narrow - about 3 mm, but when the screen is turned on, a black border is noticeable around the perimeter, which causes a slight feeling of the picture being far from the glass surface. However, there is no air between the layers of the display, and the anti-glare properties keep up with the competition. The 5.7-inch screen is equipped with a Super AMOLED matrix. Its resolution has grown significantly to Quad HD and is 1440 × 2560 pixels with a stunning 515 ppi density - the highest density in the lineup. The clarity of the picture is excellent, the fonts are very neat, even with a minimal size, in a word - there is nothing to complain about. Even in direct sunlight, the image remains readable. When deviating from the right angle of view, the colors acquire a pronounced greenish tint, which is characteristic of Samsung displays and does not affect the perception of information critically.

Flexible screen customization still offers several color rendering modes: Basic (soft colors, closer to sRGB), AMOLED movie, AMOLED photo (with difference in color temperature and proximity to Adobe RGB coverage), and adaptive display (practically covers Adobe RGB coverage). The presentation mentions that the color gamut is wider than the perception of the human eye, and the colors look like in reality. We will not go into spectrometric reasoning, we will only note that the colors are still bright, futuristic and without correction look richer than we are used to seeing in life, since they are optimized for sRGB devices. In terms of the combination of clarity, contrast, brightness reserve and energy-saving functions, this display can be called one of the best in the world, especially since no one makes such screens except Samsung.

Cameras

Both cameras have taken a significant step forward not only over their predecessors, but also over the iPhone 6 Plus. The main one with Isocell technology has a resolution of 16 megapixels, it is equipped with a fast lens (f / 1.9) and optical stabilization (Smart OIS), which allows you to take high-quality pictures when the device is shaken. The function also controls exposure time under low light conditions in automatic mode... The camera also has a selective focusing mode.

The front camera is equipped with a 3.7-megapixel sensor and an f / 1.9 aperture. She can shoot in both standard and wide-angle modes, making it possible to take group self-portraits.

Both cameras deliver crisp, rich images with high detail in the foreground and light blur in the background. Focus speed is fast when shooting in good lighting and slightly slower at dusk.

In low light conditions, the program tries to "stretch" the image, however, noise appears, and shades are distorted.

Video is shot in resolution up to 4K, there is a stabilization mode.

Performance and battery life

The smartphone is presented in two modifications of the hardware platform. The main version for the post-Soviet space (N910C) is based on an 8-core Exynos 7 Octa 5433 processor, made using a 20-nm process technology (similar to the Galaxy Alpha model). Each of the four Cortex A57 cores here accounts for up to 1.9 GHz, the other four Cortex A53 cores - 1.3 GHz each. Responsible for the graphics accelerator Mali-T760. Another version (N910S) is represented by Qualcomm SoC with 4-core Snapdragon 805 processor (clocked at 2.7 GHz) and Adreno 420 graphics.

The amount of 2-channel RAM is the maximum currently for devices running Android and is 3 GB. Its bandwidth has increased to 17 Gbps. The internal memory is 32 GB, it can be expanded using microSD cards for another 128 GB.

The synthetic tests for the Galaxy Note 4 are an easy task, it surely leaves all the devices in them far behind.

The Mali-T760 graphics accelerator is doing great: games are displayed without any complaints, 4K video is also played without problems. The performance did not make us doubt - all applications literally "fly", there is no trace of the "slowdowns" inherent in their predecessors, the "heavy" graphical interface works smoothly and beautifully. In addition, the hardware platform is built in such a way that even in the most demanding games, the smartphone heats up less than competitors and predecessors.

In addition to the standard 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA, the "tablet phone" supports 4G networks. In our case, this is LTE Cat4 with a maximum speed of 150 Mbps for reception and 50 Mbps for uploading. Networking capabilities of Galaxy Note 4 correspond to the top level of the device and are represented by support for NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 (BLE, ANT +), Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac with support for dual bands (2.4 and 5 GHz) and mode 2 X2 MIMO with accelerated data transmission in two streams according to the ac standard.

MicroUSB supports OTG and MHL. Navigation is carried out using GPS, Russian GLONASS and Chinese Beidou.

A fast charging mode is implemented for a 3220 mAh battery. The manufacturer claims that the battery should be charged up to 50% in half an hour. In fact, this took a little longer - about 40 minutes. But on the whole, the regime fully justifies itself: full time charging was 1 hour 36 minutes, which is more efficient than the Qualcomm Quick Charge technology implemented in and charging its 3080 mAh battery for more than two hours. There are also several power saving modes with limited color rendering and functionality.

With calls, 3G surfing, and app usage, the Galaxy Note 4 lasted a day or more (depending on intensity). In the mode of watching videos on YouTube via Wi-Fi, the device lasted about 9 hours on a single charge, in games one charge lasted for about 4 hours. For a device with this display size and performance, this is a normal result, and should not have expected more.

Functionality

The operating system is based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat with a proprietary TouchWiz shell and a modified Briefing flipboard. Of course, it is rife with innovations over the Galaxy Note 3, but many of them

Inheriting the "family" design and the S Pen, the tablet Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has a screen with a huge Quad HD resolution and - for the first time - a metal body. What else is interesting about one of the most advanced "shovels" on the market?

It would not be a big exaggeration to say that Galaxy Note 4 is the "star" of the first magnitude among tablet phones. Fulfilling the mission of a technological flagship, this device has incorporated most of the top ones to date. mobile technologies... Note that the Galaxy Note family, in addition to the business audience, is also positioned for people of creative professions, where, in particular, the ability to draw or photo and text editing skills is required. It's no secret that smartphones with large screens often jokingly referred to as "shovels". So, the Galaxy Note 4 seems to have everything to easily clean up the blockages of everyday tasks. So, let's evaluate the main capabilities of the new device.

Design, ergonomics

The novelty in the Galaxy Note family has retained the recognizable appearance despite new trends in the design of the company's smartphones.

In particular, this concerns a curly metal frame with a slight bend, passing along the perimeter of the device, which provides its exterior with the necessary rigor and style. True, unlike, for example, from, the frame is now painted in the main body color, which can be black, white, bronze or pink. The presence of metal is indicated only by silver bevels along the edges of the frame. As for the dimensions of the new tablet, then, compared to the Galaxy Note 3, they have changed very slightly - 153.5x78.6x8.5 mm versus 151.2x79.2x8.3 mm. This is easily explained by the fact that the diagonal of the device screen has remained unchanged (5.7 inches). But the weight has increased by 8 grams (176 g versus 168 g). By the way, we note that the tablet phone did not take care of the dust and moisture protection of the device, as, for example, in the case of the flagship Galaxy S5 (IP67).

The barely noticeable "bulge" of the screen, rounded to the edges of the case, is due to the use of 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 from Corning in the Galaxy Note 3. By the way, the display itself occupies 74.39% of the front surface of the tablet, despite the fact that, for example, in the Galaxy S5, this ratio is only 69.76%.

In the upper part of the front panel, holes were provided for the LED indicator of charging / events, the grill of the "earpiece" speaker, the lens of the front camera, as well as proximity and lighting sensors.

The oval mechanical Home / Home button under the display, like the Galaxy S5, has a fingerprint scanner that was not found in the previous model of the family. Dedicated touch buttons " Recent Apps"and" Back "are not visible without backlighting, the operating time of which is set in a special menu item.

The thin metal Power / Lock key still occupies the right edge of the phone,

and the left is a metal volume rocker.

At the bottom there is a microUSB connector, two holes for microphones,

as well as a case for the electronic pen S Pen,

and on the top, there is another hole for a third microphone, a 3.5 mm audio headset jack and an IrDA peephole.

The removable back cover retains the "leather-like" stylization, while the pattern seems to have become more embossed. The material used here is soft-touch plastic, pleasant to the touch. But the decorative "line" emphasizing the texture along the contour of the lid has disappeared somewhere. The rear panel provides access to the battery with a built-in NFC antenna, as well as microSD and microSIM card slots. In this case, to install the latter, you must first remove the battery.

In the upper part of the lid, two holes were provided: for the lens of the main camera, as well as for the LED flash unit and the multifunctional sensor (heart rate, blood oxygen concentration and ultraviolet radiation). The grill of the "multimedia" speaker, which was located at the bottom end of the Galaxy Note 3, has moved to the lower part of the panel. There is a small gap on the left side of the cover (rear view), thanks to which it is quite easy to remove.

The back cover coating provides not only a pleasant tactile sensation, but together with the edges and protrusions of the metal frame protects the device from slipping out of your hands. In addition, the settings provide special means for convenient control a tablet phone with one hand.

Screen, camera, sound

The display is definitely the main hardware feature of the Galaxy Note 4. Experts from DisplayMate, which specializes in screen testing, even noted this element of the new tablet as the best on the market. The Super AMOLED-matrix with a diagonal of 5.7 inches provides a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels (Quad HD, 2K). Compared to the Galaxy Note 3 (Full HD, 1920 x 1080) screen, the total number of pixels has grown by almost 1.8 times, and the pixel density per inch has increased, respectively, from 386 ppi to 515 ppi. As a result, a very clear picture is formed on the display, rich in colors and with large viewing angles. Even the used scheme with two subpixels PenTile RGBG, which all Super AMOLED displays "sin", no longer plays a special role.

To correct color reproduction that may seem too acidic, four profiles are available in the screen settings: Basic, AMOLED Photo, AMOLED Movie and Adaptive Display. In the latter case, only a few applications are automatically optimized for color gamut, saturation, and sharpness, but compatibility with third-party software is not guaranteed. The tablet can be operated with gloves if you enable the option to increase the sensitivity of the touch layer of the screen in the settings.

With good anti-glare properties, the screen has a fairly decent margin of brightness, which makes it comfortable to use, including in sunlight. The brightness level can be adjusted manually or use its automatic adjustment by the light sensor. Capacitive Galaxy screen Note 4 supports multitouch, while AntTuTu Tester and MultiTouch Tester have confirmed that up to ten simultaneous clicks are recognized. The manufacturer claims that the response time of the matrix is one millionth of a second. The advantages of the screen include a very good oleophobic coating.

The main camera of the tablet phone received a Sony IMX240 Exmor RS photomodule, where a 16-megapixel sensor is located on a 1 / 2.6-inch BSI matrix, and the aperture of a 31-mm lens is f / 2.2. Also not forgotten are autofocus and LED flash. "Smart" optical stabilization system (Smart OIS) at a slight shake compensates for shake of the smartphone, allowing you to avoid "shake", and also automatically lengthens the exposure time in low light conditions. The maximum possible image resolution is 5312x2988 pixels (16 MP) with an aspect ratio of 16: 9 and 3984x2988 pixels (12 MP) with a frame aspect ratio of 4: 3. Examples of photos can be seen (Dropbox).

The front camera has an impressive 3.7-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f / 1.9, and, in addition to the quite expected "Self-portrait", a panoramic shooting mode (viewing angle of 120 degrees) is supported for group "self-shooting". The resulting selfies can be corrected, beautified and enhanced as usual. The maximum resolution for "selfies" here is 2560x1440 pixels (3.7 MP, 16: 9), and with the classic aspect ratio - 1920x1440 pixels (2.8 MP, 4: 3).

The organization and design of the interface in the "Camera" application practically does not differ from what is used, for example, in a smartphone. Desired shortcuts to frequently used settings can be easily set to main screen... In addition to Auto, there are also over a dozen specialized modes, including Self Portrait, Selective Focus (after taking a shot, you can select near, far, or panoramic focus) and Panorama.

The main camera can shoot 4K or UHD video (3840x2160 pixels, 16: 9) at 30 fps. And with the front camera, the best recording at the same frame rate is obtained only in Quad HD quality (2560x1440 pixels, 16: 9). All content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - audio).

The sound from the Galaxy Note 4's "multimedia" speaker is not very loud, but pleasant. It practically does not dim even when the smartphone is placed with the screen up (but on a hard surface, of course). Reproduction is fairly clear, with noticeable bass and treble.

Three microphones (two on the bottom and one on the top of the device) successfully cope with more than just noise cancellation. So, three more recording modes have been added to the "Dictaphone" application. In "Interview" sounds are recorded from two directions (from different ends of the tablet). In a Meeting / Meeting, the device is able to distinguish up to 8 audio sources, some of which can be excluded once the recording is complete. And "Voice Memo" allows you to immediately convert the recorded voice to text.

Filling, performance

At present Galaxy time Note 4 is one of the most powerful smartphones in the world. Its model SM-N910C is based on Samsung's latest single-chip system - Exynos 7 Octa 5433. Recall that the previous generation Galaxy Note 3 tablet hides an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 crystal under its hood, created taking into account less stringent design standards (28 nm vs. 20 nm), which affects its performance and power consumption.

The architecture of the Exynos 7 Octa 5433 - big.LITTLE GTS (Global Task Scheduling) - also includes eight processor cores, four of which are high performance and the remaining four are energy efficient. However, at the same time, ARM Cortex-A15 and ARM Cortex-A7 cores were replaced by ARM Cortex-A57 and ARM Cortex-A53, respectively, operating at maximum clock frequencies 1.9 GHz and 1.3 GHz, respectively. The main difference between the new kernels is that they are based on the 64-bit ARMv8 architecture, of course, with full support for existing 32-bit applications. In terms of performance, they are said to be about 50% better than their predecessors. Recall that support for heterogeneous multiprocessing allows you to use all the cores of the crystal at the same time. For processing graphics on the chip, a special ARM Mali-T760 MP6 accelerator is provided. Six powerful execution units operating at frequencies up to 700 MHz have earned it a reputation as one of the fastest in its class. The basic configuration of the device is complemented by 3 GB of RAM. The 8-core processor with graphics accelerator can handle high screen resolutions without too many problems.

On synthetic tests AnTuTu Benchmark 5.2.0, the new tablet looked the most flawless. Having received the title of "monster" and typing 49,839 "virtual parrots", he, in particular, did not leave a single chance, for example, to the flagship. Note that Galaxy Note 3 could count on about 35 thousand "virtual birds" in this test.

In the Vellamo 3.0 benchmarks in multi-core tests (MultiCore), the Galaxy Note 4 was in the lead with a result of 1,883 points, but was only second in the "horsepower" on the processor test (Metal), losing to the "flagship killer" OnePlus One (1570 versus 1653).

On the Epic Citadel visual test with variable High Performance and High Quality settings (performance versus quality and vice versa), the average frame rate at 2560x1440 pixels differed in values only after the decimal point - 58.7 and 58.5 fps. Changing the setting to Ultra High Quality predictably reduced the value of this parameter (down to 46.8 fps).

The tablet also performed very confidently on the universal gaming benchmark 3DMark, where the results obtained by the Galaxy Note 3 on the Ice Storm Extreme tests simply went off scale.

Of the 32 GB of internal storage, approximately 24.4 GB are available, which can be expanded by an additional 128 GB using microSDXC cards. Plus, external flash drives can be easily connected using an OTG USB cable.

The flagship set of communications of the tablet includes, it seems, everything you need: a 2-band Wi-Fi module 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.1, ANT +, infrared, NFC. In addition, Galaxy Note 4 can work in Russian cellular LTE networks(Cat. 4). Note, by the way, that the use of Bluetooth 4.1 allows you to reduce the mutual influence with LTE in adjacent frequency bands.

Satellites can be used to determine location and navigation GPS systems, GLONASS and Beidou. There is also A-GPS support. This, in particular, is evidenced by the readings of the AndroiTS GPS Test test program.

Compared to last year's version, the capacity lithium ion battery in the Galaxy Note 4 it has grown very slightly from 3,200 mAh to 3,220 mAh. At the same time, for the Galaxy Note 4, the manufacturer announced the Internet time (3G / LTE / Wi-Fi) - 11, 10 and 13 hours, respectively. But video playback takes up to 12 hours. So, our test video in MP4 format and Full HD-quality at full brightness spun continuously for just over 9 hours, which, generally speaking, is very good.

On the AnTuTu Tester battery tests, the tablet earned 6,872 points, outperforming a 6-inch (4,837) with the same Quad HD resolution and a fairly capacious 4,000 mAh lithium-polymer battery. In practice, the autonomy of the new tablet is approximately at the same level as that of the Galaxy Note 3. The fast charging function allows you to fill the battery from zero to 50% in about half an hour, however, this requires a special 2-mode (5 V; 2 A and 9 V; 1.67 A) charger, either included or meeting the Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 specification.

Power saving modes, traditional for Samsung smartphones, have not gone anywhere, including the extreme one, which turns the device into a simple "dialer". Typical power saving measures include limiting background data and / or performance, and avoiding a color-coded interface.

Software

On top of the most recent version of Android 4.4.4 (KitKat), the Galaxy Note 3 uses a well-known proprietary shell from Samsung - TouchWiz. Compared to the one used in the Galaxy S5, little has changed in it, although there are still some differences. And the most important of them concerns multitasking. Recall that back in 2012, the Galaxy Note II offered the ability to run two programs simultaneously, dividing the large screen space between them.

Galaxy Note 4's Multi Window feature allows you to effectively multitask your device by choosing the most convenient way to access applications - full screen, split into multiple windows or pop-up windows. The size and position of such windows on the screen, which, by the way, can overlap each other, can be easily changed. When minimized, round icons will hang on top of everything, denoting application windows. Switching any program to the reduced window mode is done with a simple gesture (swipe down from the top corner of the screen diagonally).

By the way, its own news feed is now formed not by the My Magazine application (as in the Galaxy Note 3), but by Briefing.

Among the pre-installed programs on the Galaxy Note 4, it is worth noting clients of popular services, including such as Evernote, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

But in the updated S Health application, you can not only count your steps and monitor your heart rate, but also measure the oxygen saturation of your blood, and, in addition, the level of ultraviolet radiation.

How alternative way For security, it is convenient to use fingerprints to lock the screen, log in to websites, and verify your Samsung account. It is recommended that you scan and memorize the images of three different fingers (thumb, middle and index).

Work withSPen

The S Pen is key feature of the Galaxy Note family.

The body of the plastic stylus, which received a ribbed texture in the fourth generation, has become more ergonomic. The growth of functionality did not affect the size of this tool, and the principle of operation has not changed. Now, in addition to tilt, rotation and movement speed, the stylus is capable of recognizing 2048 degrees of pressure, that is, its sensitivity has doubled compared to a similar accessory Galaxy Note 3.

The context menu can be launched, either by pulling out the pen from the pencil case,

or by holding the tip of the S Pen over the screen while pressing the button on the stylus. The list offers access to four (and not five, as was the case in the Galaxy Note 3) commands. Thus, "Action Note" helps to write a text that, after recognition, will be used, for example, as a phone number, SMS message, email etc. The Smart Select command allows you to quickly collect content by saving selected items by tracing them in a rectangular manner, and then extracting text. Together with the "Scrapbook" function, it allows you to collect and save content from different sources (web pages, video files) and share it. The Crop Image and Caption Caption commands save a randomly cropped portion of an image to a file, and also take a screenshot that you can write and draw on, and send it to other users.

Writing notes for photos, images, typed text and handwritten text is still supported by the S Note app. It offers its own templates, writing and drawing tools, voice recognition, and more. By the way, the program's settings allow you to help him with your finger when taking notes with the S Pen. S Note files are suggested to be synced with Samsung and Evernote accounts.

With S Note Photo Note, you can take pictures of notes, such as from paper, a screen, or a chalkboard, to be used as notes after editing. For those with a passion for painting, Galaxy Note 4 has added the PEN.UP program, where you can look at other people's work done with the S Pen and post your own.

Purchase, conclusions

The combination of high-performance hardware and good battery life, an excellent Quad HD screen and a wonderful OIS camera makes the Galaxy Note 4 one of the best tablet phones on the market. And if you take into account the updated functionality of the S Pen with the accompanying software, then the new product simply does not have direct competitors. At the same time, do not forget about the fingerprint scanner, various sensors and other proprietary "chips" of this device, including, in particular, the multi-window mode. Of course, the lack of dust and moisture protection, as well as wireless charging, can hardly be attributed to the advantages of the Galaxy Note 4. But, perhaps, only the high price, which at the time of writing the review, according to Yandex.Market, averaged 36,990 rubles, - the main disadvantage of the new tablet phone.

Galaxy Note 4 should be safely recommended to those who have already appreciated the advantages of the S Pen on previous models of the Galaxy Note family, or are going to make the most of the possibilities of this accessory in their business or creativity. Otherwise, more the best choice among smartphones with large screens, there will be a device without an electronic pen, which, moreover, is cheaper.

Positioning

The Note line started out as an experiment inside Samsung, and the result was unexpectedly in demand in the market. Already by the second generation, the Note line acquired the features of a flagship, stood out in a separate direction and began to pull sales over to itself. Samsung has two flagships throughout the year, one is the Galaxy S, which arrives in early spring, and the fall is the Note line. In 2013, it became clear that most of the innovations will be used in the Note line, these devices have become not only a testing ground for the latest technologies but also a key product for the company. Interest from the Galaxy S gradually shifted towards the Galaxy Note, suffice it to say that sales of the Galaxy S4 reached 10 million devices worldwide in the first 50 days, while the Galaxy Note 3 sold the same amount in 60 days. Conditionally, we can say that in Samsung's offer these two categories of goods existed in parallel and gradually the focus shifted to the older model. There are many reasons for this - the absence of real and strong competitors, the high cost of the product, which in itself creates a niche (there are always those who want a phone at the maximum cost), excellent technical characteristics. The Note 3 has been very successful and, like the Note 2, its competitors have not been able to replicate it. Take a look at the Note line and how it has changed.

For example, LG has been following the development of both the Galaxy S and Note line very closely. In 2013, the company was forced to decide how it could compete with these two flagships and created some kind of intermediate product - the LG G3. In terms of size, the diagonal of the screen, this model is exactly in the middle between the Galaxy S5 and Note 4, although functionally gravitates to the Galaxy S5.

The Note line has created a niche in the market and has become successful, this is proved by how Apple tried to bite off its own piece by creating the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, a hybrid of its phone and tablet, which, like the Chinese devices, does not rely on new ones. technology or quality of work, but solely on the growth of the screen diagonal. That is, just like the Chinese, Apple sells just another device with a large diagonal, but not a concept that changes the idea of the device and its capabilities.

At Samsung, creating the Note line, they have always focused on the dream of consumers to get the highest possible performance that will remain relevant for several years to come. For example, Note 3 does not lose its relevance today, a year after its release. In fact, this device remains one of the best on the market, it does not look outdated, and the camera quality is second only to the latest generation Galaxy S5 and Note 4. For fans of the brute strength and power of phones in synthetic tests, such devices are just a godsend. For ordinary consumers it is also a good choice, since when buying such a device, you don't have to think about changing it for at least a couple of years, or even all three. The main thing is that after a couple of years you will have a device in your hands that is quite functional and works well. Perhaps this is what determines the real flagships of the market - not how they are positioned at the time of release, but whether they can be used several years later, and without the user missing something. And in this aspect, two companies lead the market - Apple and Samsung, which is proved by their sales. But the approach of these manufacturers is very different: if Apple does not rely on technical characteristics, but on the strength of the brand, marketing, design, then Samsung has always focused on the filling of the device, its capabilities and the latest developments. These are completely different approaches, and in this aspect Note 4 does not look like a device for everyone, it is only for those who want to get the maximum possible technologies for their money and, as a result, the quality of pictures, voice transmission, speed of work and other points.

Among the users of the Note line, three groups of consumers can be distinguished - on the one hand, these are geeks, those who focus on the most productive, interesting solutions. The second group is business users, those who need productive solutions with additional features, for example, working with a stylus, handwritten notes. And it is also partly a "fashionable" audience, those who buy the most expensive solutions are trying to disguise themselves as a business audience. Let me remind you that, as before, Note is the only product on the market that is suitable for those who are used to taking notes by hand and love to write, there are simply no alternatives to this product in this aspect.

Design, dimensions, controls

Samsung positions the Note line as the most expensive devices. In 2013, they added a leather-embossed backrest, which caused a lot of grins - supposedly a premium product can only be made of real leather, and this is a fake leather. The lack of logic in such comments, as well as of common sense, is understandable. Plastic is one of the best materials on the market, but the main thing is that it is unpretentious to use. Samsung's find was copied by many Chinese companies that keep their nose to the wind, and in 2014 we see dozens of models with embossed plastic under the skin - this allows you to maintain the appearance for quite a long time. But at the same time, many forgot that leather covers for Note 3 were available from the first months of sales - that is, you could modify your device as you like. Do you want leather? Buy a cover and get this kind of material. In my opinion, this is the most adequate approach - when you yourself choose the material that you need. As a regular user of the Note line, I rather wanted to get a durable, wear-resistant case, and the fact that it comes with the default package is a big plus.

It is also important to note that Note covers are not just an external accessory, they are part of the case, you install a cover instead of a back cover. We'll come back to this question at the end of the review, as it is important in terms of fashion accessories that are popping up for the Note 4.

Let's start with the exterior of the model - outwardly it resembles Note 3, there are few differences as such, they can be confused from afar. In many ways, the design inheritance is not bad at all, especially since it is accompanied by radical changes in the case materials. Just like the Galaxy Alpha, the Note 4 uses a metal frame around the entire body. Look at the Alpha, this is how it looks on this miniature apparatus.

The Note 4 looks about the same, if you close your eyes to a completely different size of the device. The metal edges are beveled and play in the light. But at the same time, the side edge itself is painted to match the color of the case - in a pink device it is pink, in white it is white, and so on. From a technological point of view, this is a certain challenge - how to achieve such a quality coating with metal paint so that it does not peel off with constant use. I specifically tried to scratch the cover with keys and other metal objects, no traces remain. I admit that it will be possible to achieve the result in the form of scratches with a knife or a nail, but this is definitely a deliberate damage to the device.

I all like the Note 3, but I don't like the fact that the side edges peel off after a year of use, as well as one of the edges crumpled after repeated drops.

It should be noted that the Note 3, like the previous devices, very easily withstood falls from a height of a person's height onto different surfaces. With Note 4, I tried to smash it onto the parquet floor from 1.5 meters, there is no noticeable damage. I didn’t drop it on the asphalt, because I didn’t want to spoil the new device. In total, one of my complaints, apparently, has been removed - in Note 4, the durability of the frame is brought to another level, it will not change or fray, since the edge is made of metal.

Initially, the device comes on the market in 4 colors: white, black, pink and gold. All colors look interesting, unlike the previous season, you don't have to wait for these colors additionally, they appear instantly.

\

The back cover is also embossed under the skin, but the pattern has changed, it has become a little larger, there is no stitching at the edges. Not overwritten White color wearable, looks good. The lid, unlike the previous device, must be snapped on carefully at the bottom, due to the slight bending of the case, it does not always snap into place instantly. But this is not a problem, you just need to be careful.

The loudspeaker in the device was moved to the back wall, the design is completely similar to the Galaxy S5 - Note 3 had a loudspeaker on the bottom end. The changed location made the speaker even louder, in Note 3 it was impossible to complain about it, now the same melodies sound even louder, I tried to show this in our video.

There are microphones on the ends - there are now three of them in the device. Two at the bottom and one at the top. Three microphones do an excellent job not only with noise cancellation in a street or a noisy room, but they added some functions that are uncharacteristic for phones and I have not seen before. The voice recorder has been improved - now it has the "Interview" mode, when it records sound from two microphones - it is important to turn the phone with its end to the interlocutor and, preferably, put it on the table. There is also a "Conference" mode, when sound is recorded from different sources. One of the new chips, but unlike many, it is not at all useless and convenient in work and life.

I want to note that it is from the point of view of speech quality that the Note 4 has done a lot of work. And this is not only support for HD Voice codecs, which, in turn, depend on operator support. Samsung tried to create the best-sounding phone for conversations, for this they worked both on the speaker and on the microphones. Due to the illegibility and unimportance of this parameter for the vast majority of people, they simply will not notice it. But I spend about 1.5-2 hours a day on the phone, and for me the sound quality is important, here it is the maximum possible. I can only compare with Nokia phones, which in the latest flagships have regained their former quality.

A 16-megapixel camera module protrudes on the back panel; it does not have any edging. It does not perform much, and this is already familiar to Note 3, it does not pose any problems. Considering that the camera is in the middle, this even has its plus, the body rises, and the speaker sounds louder when the device is on the table.

The sensor under the camera has changed compared to the Galaxy S5, now it can not only measure the pulse, but also measure the level of oxygen in the blood, stress, ultraviolet radiation. Many parameters will become superfluous for the majority, but a lot is not a little, in the end, they do not ask for additional money for them.

At the top there is an infrared port for controlling household appliances. Your phone can play a role remote control for any technique. And this sometimes saves and helps. I had several situations when in hotels there were no batteries in the remotes from the equipment, and the phone saved me, in one click it turned into a full-fledged remote control. At home and when using TV services (cable or satellite channels), it also provides all programs, schedules and searches for them. Very comfortably. The service itself is from Peel.

On the left side there is a paired volume rocker, on the right side there is an on / off button. The keys are easy to use, they are also metal. At the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, while at the bottom there is a USB connector (microUSB 2.0 standard). Perhaps the only retreat was just such a connector - in the Galaxy S5, Note 3, the USB 3.0 connector. I have heard many versions of why they did this, but the most likely one sounds like the one that Samsung hoped to be able to use the USB 4.0 connector here. It looks the same as the connectors in the latest Apple devices, and is very simple. But such devices will appear only in the summer of 2015, perhaps that is why there was a return to USB 2.0. It cannot be considered a serious drawback, few people will regret USB 3.0, it was important for a very small part of the audience.

At the bottom, you can also see the slot for the S-Pen stylus. As before, the handle is fastened securely, does not fly out, we will talk about it separately, since it has changed.

Let's talk about the front surface of the device - to the left of the speaker is the indicator of missed events, it blinks blue, you can turn it off in the menu. On the right is the proximity sensor, and even to the right is the front camera, it received a higher resolution and also new function panoramic shot of yourself. Let's talk about this separately, for someone, perhaps, this will be an interesting addition to the functionality of the phone.

The mechanical central key has remained unchanged, on either side of it there are two touch-sensitive keys.

Let's open the back cover. Inside we will see a card slot microSD memory, their "hot" replacement is supported. Slightly below is a slot for microSIM cards, but you need to remove the battery to replace it.

Unlike the Galaxy S5, the Note 4 does not have any protection against water and dust, let me remind you that the S5 supports the IP67 standard. This is simply not provided here, so you should not throw the phone into the water. Finally, the last thing worth mentioning in this part of the review is the dimensions of the device - 153.5x78.6x8.5 mm, weight - 176 grams. It is comparable to Note 3 (151.2x79.2x8.3 mm, weight - 168 grams), fits well in the hand and does not cause any problems. It is often said that these are extremely large devices, and this is true. The phone is rather big, but quite comfortable for a man's hand. Look at the pictures in comparison with other devices.

For comparison, Apple 6 Plus, which has a smaller battery, smaller screen diagonal (5.5 inches), weighs 172 grams and is almost 8 millimeters taller - 158.1x77.8x7.1 mm. It's simple different measurements- Apple was unable to achieve a small size with a smaller screen. At the same time, in the Note line, the dimensions do not follow from the components, but from the originally invented form factor, which remains for the 4th year in a row. Please note that all Note models are close to these dimensions, and they are unlikely to change, because the question is how comfortable it is to hold them in the hand, and the compromise that the company found was ideal for such a form factor.

Display

It's worth remembering that Samsung is one of the few manufacturers that create their own components, including screens. Therefore, for many years the company has been a leader in this market, and competitors simply do not get access to the latest developments, this was one of the reasons why Apple tried to abandon Samsung components, but in the end was forced to return to the company and buy them again.

The race regarding the quality of screens has long gone to a fundamentally different level - it is not only the picture quality, screen resolution, but also how much energy the display consumes, this parameter comes to the fore. Several generations ago, Samsung tried to start reducing power consumption in screens and made significant progress in this - all other things being equal, the company's devices work as much or more than competitors. They have the best energy efficiency, and the display plays a huge role in this. At the same time, for the layman, the difference in screens is often difficult to imagine, they live within the framework of marketing stories and do not understand the real difference between technologies, displays, and when faced with them in real life and having the opportunity to compare them, they cannot come to their senses for a long time - the difference hits eyes. At some point, I even realized that I needed to compare the latest generation of screens in tablets and show this difference with very specific examples.

Let's take a look at the technical characteristics of the screen in Note 4. The diagonal remains unchanged - 5.7 inches, but the resolution has grown to QHD - 1440x2560 pixels, 515 dpi, SuperAMOLED. In my opinion, any screen with a resolution of more than 400 dpi can already be considered excellent, the difference is extremely difficult to see. Other parameters are used - picture quality, color rendering, usability.

To begin with, the Note 4 is one of the few Corning Gorilla Glass 3 devices (an example of another device is the Nexus 5). Usually, the second version of glass is installed in phones, it is noticeably cheaper, but inferior in strength by 50 percent, in resistance to scratches - by 40 percent. At the moment, nothing better than this piece of glass simply does not exist.

But the choice of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is not at all accidental - the thickness of the glass plays a role here, since in the Note 4, as well as in previous devices, there is a special layer that processes the strokes of the stylus. This is a technological difference from other devices, that is, the digitizer from Wacom is only in the Note line, and Wacom itself was partially bought by Samsung. Competitors will have to either invent something similar from scratch, or be content with conventional screens, as they do today. Drawing on this device is much easier than on any other model with a stylus. At the presentation of Note 4, they specifically emphasized that they tried to ensure that the pen was as similar as possible to a pen or pencil, the screen handled the degree of pressure and you could draw, as you do on a sheet of paper. Or write the way you are used to. Looking ahead, I will say that despite the same pen design, we managed to achieve greater resemblance to pens, which is a plus for this model.

Let's go back to the screen and its characteristics. At the presentation, it was mentioned that the increased resolution allows for better display of fonts. The eye cannot see it, but the fonts are neater. Will this affect the perception of the picture? I think yes. The Note 4's screen makes your eyes less tired, tested in practice.

The next point is the accuracy of color reproduction. In my opinion, measurements and their interpretation, which is even more important than getting the result, should be done by professionals, those who do it every day and earn their living from it. Display Mate has done some research on the Note 4's screen - you can find it.

The short conclusion sounds like this - this is the most complex screen of all existing, and it has the most accurate color reproduction, the most flexible settings, it has no analogues. It also outperforms the screens in the Galaxy S5 (it was number one up to this point), as well as the screen in the Galaxy Tab S. Read the report from this company, it is very detailed and describes in detail why this is the best screen in smartphones, the second place is occupied by the Galaxy S5. ...

In practice, the screen seemed to me very close to the Galaxy S5, but the fonts and the picture are clearer - the different screen resolution affects. I also want to note that the picture remains readable in different conditions, including the sun. The advantage of the screen is the ability to customize it to suit your preferences, you can choose to work like on other phones (faded colors, RGB), you can choose Adobe RGB, as well as an adaptive screen.

The screen supports operation with any gloves, you only need to activate this function in the menu.

Take a look at the comparison of the screen with the Galaxy Note 3 (pictured above) although the pictures do not convey the real difference.

And this is how fonts differ in the same program.

In my opinion, the amount of work that Samsung has done in the field of SuperAMOLED screens has created a gap from the nearest competitors for years. It is SuperAMOLED that allows you to create a special power saving mode that other players do not have. And in general, with such a screen brightness, the supply of which is huge, with such a picture quality, this screen does not consume so much, it allows you to install the fastest processor and graphics processor without prejudice to the overall operating time of the device.

In the end, I want to note that the screen in Note 4 can be called a work of engineering art - it is the best screen in terms of a set of parameters, it has no direct competitors.

Battery

The capacity of the Li-Ion battery has hardly changed compared to the Note 3: 3220 mAh versus 3200 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the operating time in the main modes has not changed, these are about the same values: in standby mode - up to 850 hours of operation, in talk mode - up to 16 hours, video playback - up to 10 hours, music - about 50 hours.

Due to the fact that a new chipset made using 20 nm technology is used here (just like in Alpha), there is an increase in operating time, but it is leveled by a large screen resolution and a powerful graphics processor. At the presentation, it was said that with the same battery capacity, they were able to achieve an increase in runtime by 7.5 percent.

To some extent, this is an insidious figure, since it affects synthetic dimensions, and not the real behavior of the phone in life. Our measurements of the operating time when playing video (maximum brightness of the backlight, HD video in a loop) show that the time is about 9 hours, that is, it was reduced by an hour (Exynos version), but on the Qualcomm version these are the same 10 hours. All other things being equal, this can be attributed to the chipset drivers and their work on this hardware. I think that in reality the Exynos version will not show an increase in battery life compared to the previous model, and this applies to the Qualcomm version of the device.

Under normal load, the device easily works for two days, as it was for the previous model. This is one of the longest-lived smartphones on the market, and no one has been able to come close to it in this parameter. Regardless of what modes you work in, what you do on your smartphone, you can know one thing for sure - it will live longer than similar devices with the same screen size. Under a very heavy load, as in my case, my Note 3 survives until the evening - this is about 3-4 hours of screen operation, constantly on the network, transferring a large amount of data. Note 4 showed exactly the same results, there were no differences.

Interestingly, the shape of the battery in the Note 4 has changed, it looks different from the Note 3.

The device uses Adaptive Fast Charging & Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology, this is the first model with it. In the settings (item "Energy saving"), you can note the possibility of fast charging. In this case, with a native, complete charger You can charge the phone by half in half an hour, a full charge is possible in an hour and a half, while in an hour the device will be charged up to 90 percent.

Curiously, fast charging technology was developed exclusively for Snapdragon processors, but Samsung got the right to use it for Exynos too. The chargers themselves are also different, without proper charging it will not be possible to achieve such a time, normal charging will do it in 3 hours (2A). In my opinion, fast charging is one of the visible advantages of this device; recharging the phone in 2 hours up to 90 percent of its capacity is expensive. In the car, fast charging will not work, which is a pity.

Finally, I want to point out that the Note 4 has a lot of room to extend its battery life. From elementary screen brightness adjustment - the maximum values are excessive for the majority - to disabling S Pen detection if the stylus is not needed, and many other settings. Including limiting the processor power, which does not affect performance, but gives about 5-6 "extra" hours of work. I think that in the near future, hands will reach to write a detailed material on how you can save energy on Android smartphones without compromising the comfort of their use, especially since the issue causes controversy and lively discussions. On my Galaxy Note 3 / Galaxy S5, I only achieve such battery life through settings that many people find it impossible.

Finally, I want to point out that just like in the S5, two power saving modes have been added to the Note 4. There is a usual power saving mode, in which you can limit the background work of applications, enable gray colors for the screen (for AMOLED this is a trick - gray color consumes almost no energy). Moreover, in the gray scale, you can work almost everywhere, even watch a video - but it will be gray, which is not very pleasant and convenient.

This saver mode is good when you run out of battery, but you need all the features of your phone. Then, on 10 percent of the charge, you can safely live for about three hours, practically denying yourself nothing. Three hours is an active use of the device, just in your pocket it can live much longer.

The maximum mode of limiting power consumption cuts almost everything, with 45 percent of the battery charge the phone can work in standby mode for at least 6 days! But, of course, it all depends on how you use it. The gray scale is also included, but all communications are cut off, the list running applications limited to only those that you allowed, all background processes turn off. This is a very deeply revised procedure, since many system functions are disabled, you will not be able to take a screenshot in this mode, many built-in options will be unavailable (but you do not need them).

I liked this mode because when the battery runs out, activating this mode with one touch, you can safely live until the evening - SMS and voice will be available to you.

It will be useful to remind that competitors simply do not have anything like this. Officially, these features did not come to Note 3, the company considered that this new model should be different from the previous one. Unofficially, this functionality from S5 was added to third-party firmware, but the quality of these firmware raises questions, they are not always stable.

Memory, memory cards, chipset, performance

Let's start with a simple one, the device has 3 GB of RAM, which is the maximum size for Android at the moment. In comparison, 6th generation Apple devices only have 1GB of storage. In theory, it is possible to organize the operation of the OS in various ways, in particular, the amount of RAM is important in order to keep the open browser pages in memory, they can be quickly called up. But they can also be cached in regular memory. The user is usually not interested in this, he is concerned about how quickly and efficiently he can open a page in the device's memory. From this point of view, the Note 4, like the Note 3, is one of the best on the market.

The built-in memory is 32 GB, you have about 24 GB of space available for your programs and data. You can install a memory card with a capacity of up to 128 GB, there is almost no difference in access speed, so applications saved on the card will work just as quickly.

Now let's focus on the hardware differences between the two versions of Note 4. The N910S model is built on Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 - 4 cores Krait 450 up to 2.7 GHz, Adreno 420, LTE Cat.6. And the N910C version, which is the main one for Russia, is built on Exynos 5 Octa 5433, 8-core processor, up to 1.9 GHz for the Cortex A57 core, up to 1.3 GHz for the Cortex A53 core, the Mali-T760 graphics accelerator - LTE Cat.4.

For the first time, Samsung used 20 nm technology for the Galaxy Alpha chipset, which is related to the delay in the release of this model. The factories of the company are switching to a new technical process. The Note 4 also uses it.

The RAM remained dual-channel, but the bandwidth increased to 17 Gb / s (1066 MHz).

The new Cortex A53 / A57 cores should provide not only performance, but less heat under heavy load. Comparing Note 3 and Note 4 in "heavy" toys, I can say that in practice it is clearly noticeable. In the new model, the heating is almost not felt, and I did not manage to turn off the camera when recording video in ultra-high resolution after games. Although video recording is limited to 5 minutes, it goes back to the days of the Note 3 and overheating.

In all synthetic tests, the Note 4 performs at its best, being the fastest smartphone on the market today. See for yourself the virtual parrots.

It is a pity, but there are no generally available and universal benchmarks on the market that could show the performance of the graphics subsystem. The same Epic Citadel benchmark shows the maximum performance for both the Note 3 and Note 4. While this is just a good result for the Galaxy S5, the effect is less RAM.

In theory, the 16-core Mali T-760 GPU outperforms the Adreno 420. In practice, the Note 4 confirms the result, but the difference is not too big.

In general, the solution on Exynos is more productive. In practice, this is noticeable in the camera mode - for example, when shooting at night, the shutter is triggered instantly, while on the Note 3 you had to wait for the image to be processed, this is directly related to the speed of the chipset. Historically, users prefer a Qualcomm solution, but in the case of the Note 4, there is not much difference between them, Qualcomm wins slightly in battery life, but loses in performance. The difference is not catastrophic and almost imperceptible in actual use of the devices.

USB, Bluetooth, communication capabilities

To begin with, the Note 4 was the first device to support Bluetooth 4.1. And the first accessory supporting this technology was the Gear S.

In addition to the fact that BT 4.1 has incorporated all the protocols implemented in previous versions, it has added several fundamental features. Firstly, this is an extended range, which can reach several tens of meters, depending on the device settings and how the manufacturer configured this option. Secondly, IP is used for addressing, that is, devices now have their own unique addresses, and communication with many such devices is supported. In practice, thanks to this, a connection with watch Gear S, you can receive a call from the phone on the watch, but you can also pick up a call received on the SIM card in the watch or receive it on the smartphone. That is, the connection acts in two directions, and the watch and the smartphone act alternately in relation to each other as a headset. This was not possible in previous versions of the standard.

From technical points, the interaction between Bluetooth and LTE has been improved, now, within the framework of one device, the operation of these technologies is synchronized, there is no mutual interference (for our LTE frequencies it is irrelevant). Plus, Bluetooth devices can now access the cloud and transfer their results directly, bypassing the companion device, as was previously necessary. But within the Note 4, this is not so relevant, after all, this is not an accessory, but the main device.

USB connection... It uses USB 2.0, that is, the data transfer rate is not 45 Mb / s, as in the Galaxy Note 3 / S5, but about 20 Mb / s. These are not theoretical, but real results on devices. They may differ depending on the operating system and the computer to which you connect your phone. Both up and down. But I think you understand the difference.

The microUSB connector also supports the MHL standard, which means that using a special cable (available from electronics stores), you can connect your phone to a TV (to the HDMI output). In fact, the standard describes the ability to connect via microUSB to HDMI. This solution looks preferable to a separate miniHDMI connector on the case.

The maximum data transfer rate in LTE is 150 Mbps.

Wi-Fi... Supports 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac standard, the wizard is similar to that for Bluetooth. You can remember the selected networks, automatically connect to them. It is possible to set up a connection to the router with one touch, for this you need to press a button on the router, and also activate a similar button in the device menu (WPA SecureEasySetup). Of the additional options, it is worth noting the setup wizard, it appears when the signal is weak or disappearing. You can also configure Wi-Fi to work on a schedule.

Also for the 802.11 n standard, the HT40 operating mode is supported, which allows you to double throughput Wi-Fi (requires support from another device).

Wi-Fi Direct... A protocol that aims to replace Bluetooth or compete with its third version (it also uses Wi-Fi version n to transfer large files). In the Wi-Fi settings menu, select the Wi-Fi Direct section, the phone starts looking for devices around. We choose desired device, activate the connection on it, and voila. Now, in the file manager, you can view files on another device, as well as transfer them. Another option is to simply find the devices connected to your router and transfer to them required files, this can be done from the gallery or other sections of the phone. The main thing is that the device supports Wi-Fi Direct.

NFC... The handset has NFC technology, which can be used with various additional applications.

S Beam... A technology that allows you to transfer a file of several gigabytes to another phone in a few minutes. In fact, we see in the S Beam a combination of two technologies - NFC and Wi-Fi Direct. The first technology is used to bring up and authorize phones, while the second is used to transfer the files themselves. A creatively reworked way using Wi-Fi Direct is much easier than using a two-phone connection, file selection, and so on.

Infrared port... It is necessary to use the phone as a control panel for various household appliances. Automatically adjusts for almost any vehicle model.

Camera

The situation is repeated last year, when the Note 3 received a camera module from the Galaxy S4, but due to software improvements, it began to shoot a little better. The Note 4 comes with a camera module from the Galaxy S5, a 16-megapixel sensor with ISOCELL technology from Samsung... In fact, we are seeing a change in components, the abandonment of Sony cameras in top-end products, since Samsung was able to perfect its own technology.

As a user of both the S5 and Note 3, I can say that I like the S5's HDR mode, which I have on by default, it works instantly and gives good quality pictures. It can be argued for a long time which camera shoots better than others, but it can be argued for sure that Samsung smartphones almost always outperform their competitors in terms of their characteristics. Moreover, Apple devices have long and firmly established themselves as very average in terms of cameras, Android devices have gone far ahead in this aspect.

From point of view technical characteristics the camera has not changed, except that optical stabilization has been added.

The geometry of the matrix is 16: 9, the pixel size has not changed - 1.12 microns, while the F / 2.2, which is very good, but quite standard for the market. The focal length in terms of 35 mm is 31 mm. USO settings in manual mode are from 100 to 800, in automatic mode from 50 to 1600.

The camera interface has been simplified, so you can set a couple of your shortcuts to the main screen, a line with basic settings is called from the menu, and only by pressing it again, the entire list opens in the form of icons.

I decided to compare the quality of the images with the Galaxy S5, since the camera modules are the same and should provide comparable quality. Look at the pictures for yourself, they are about the same, the quality is marginally better for the Note 4. We could not see any striking differences here.

Galaxy Note 4 Galaxy S5

A completely different matter - pictures in the dark, the camera began to shoot much better. Moreover, unlike the S5, it shoots instantly, there is no waiting for a snapshot.

Galaxy Note 4 Galaxy S5

But comparing the shots in total darkness with the Lumia 930, the Sony Xperia Z3, I should note that these two devices do much better. In their pictures, you can read the text on a sheet of paper, while on the Note 4 it remains smudged.

Should you focus on shooting in the dark? I think that the overwhelming majority of people always shoot in conditions where light is still present. And in this aspect camera Note 4 is able to produce guaranteed good pictures. Moreover, regardless of whether you conjure over them or not. This is a result that is noticeably higher than that of smartphones from Apple and higher than the market average for Android flagships. In my opinion, the camera shoots much better than analogs from other companies.

The "Mode" button, which is familiar from previous devices, hides exactly the same settings inside as before (when quick start not available). These are such effects as Retouching, Motion Snapshot, Panorama, Dual camera, Sports, All-round panorama, Sounds and photos.

One of the major changes is that additional effects can now be downloaded from the Samsung store - everything that was previously in previous phones is available for free, but many new effects will be on sale. A nice feature, the company opens the SDK, and other companies will be able to create effects for the camera, I do not know whether this direction will be successful, but I am sure that we will see some interesting settings.

The maximum shooting resolution is UHD (3840x2160; 16: 9), and the default is FullHD (1920x1080; 16: 9), you should use it (there is also an intermediate one - WQHD - 2560x1440 pixels, to fit the screen). There is also just HD and VGA, but I don't think you need them. UHD resolution remains a thing in itself, you won't be able to watch it anywhere other than a number of players and a phone.

For FullHD resolution and below, you can also use different shooting rates. For example, "smooth movement", in which the jerking of objects in the frame is smoothed, is recorded on the microphone.

Slow motion can be 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 speed. Microphone recording is not possible. Fast movement is the opposite, 2x, 4x, and 8x acceleration.

Finally, I would like to focus on the front camera. I'm not a fan of the phenomenon of selfie, but many people love to take pictures of themselves against the backdrop of the surrounding beauty. Especially for them, the front camera was made with a resolution of 3.7 megapixels. You can take pictures not only by pressing the screen, but by placing your finger on the sensor on the back, where the heart rate is being measured. Here are some selfies for example (skin is tinted by default, this is Beauty mode).

The S Pen, or the new pen experience

One of the key differences between the Note line is the built-in stylus, which allows you to draw on the screen and do it extremely well. I have no artistic talent, and therefore I just die when I see how people can draw on such devices. In the Pen.UP program you can look at someone else's work, evaluate it and upload your drawings.

The logic of the S Pen has hardly changed in relation to the Note 3, although the pen itself has changed, serifs have appeared on it, it is more comfortable to hold it in the hand. At the same time, the weight and size remained the same. MontBlanc "pens" can be purchased as additional accessories, with which you can "write" on the Note 4 screen.

The sensitivity of the handle was doubled, that is, not only touch is supported, but the screen also processes the pressure on it. My impression is very positive, the S Pen works as it should, however, I only write my notes, not draw.

Pull out the S Pen, and the context menu immediately appears. The first item is an active note, in it you can not only enter text by hand, but also create a reminder to call, send mail or SMS to a specific number, it is recognized and transfers you to the appropriate application. A kind of fantasy, but personally to me it is unnecessary, I just write notes in the S Note. The last application is in the menu, but from the active note you can go to it with one touch, there are already all sorts of templates, voice recognition of text and the like.

Other items context menu- the inscription on the screenshot, the phone takes a screenshot, and then you can write something on it. The choice of pens and pencils, colors can be saved for future use.

Packaging and equipment

The smartphone comes in a sleek white box with rounded corners.

Inside the package is the device itself, a stylus, a battery, as well as a standard USB cable with charger and headset; also user manual and warranty.

Design

The device is available in the following colors: white, black, gold and pink.

There are few buttons here. One on the front panel - there is a fingerprint scanner under it. On the right side - the power key, on the left - toggle the volume.

Apparatus in operation

The smartphone has undoubtedly top-end filling, one of the most modern and powerful. 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 805 APQ8084 Pro, or 8-core Samsung Exinus 5433. The OP volume is also good - 3 GB, and the built-in one - 32 GB, but it is possible to expand using a microSD memory card.

Display

The screen can be considered the main innovation in the device - Super AMOLED with a diagonal of 5.7 inches with Quad HD resolution. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, practically does not glare under the sun, the light sensor functions perfectly.

Interface

The device is equipped with Android OS version 4.4.4. This is still KitKat, but most likely it will soon be installed - Lolilop. The interface for Samsung is traditional.

Camera

The camera in the device did not disappoint either. Sony's 16 megapixel sensor works wonders. The camera app launches in seconds from the lock screen. The only problem: when shooting with this sensor, the flash is easy to close, it is very close.

Autofocus works clearly and very quickly, and by holding the dot on the display for 1-2 seconds, you can save the exposure and focus settings for the desired frame. In the resolution settings, along with the full 16 megapixel resolution, you can expose pictures with an aspect ratio of 1: 1 for Instagram, then the image will be with a resolution of 8 megapixels.

The camera captures details and tones perfectly, and shooting in low light conditions will delight you with excellent results. There is a double flash, but its quality is not very good - the objects of shooting are constantly shining through.

The camera shoots UHD (4K) video with good sound and a frequency of 30 fps.

The front camera has also been updated. There is a 3.7 megapixel sensor with an f / 1.9 aperture. Added to this is the panoramic selfie mode, which allows you to take a picture with a 120 ° angle of view.

Wireless networks

The variant with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor means the presence of the fastest LTE available today: 4G +, (LTE Advanced, Cat.6.) The variant with the Exynos 5433 processor comes with support for LTE Cat.4. Wi-Fi is the most modern for today - the smartphone operates at two frequencies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). There are no complaints about Bluetooth 4.0 LE. And the NFC module does not raise any questions. GPS locates your location at lightning speed.

Autonomy

The device has a 3 220 mAh battery. Within the framework of everyday use of the device, it will be enough for the whole day of a rather active life, in particular, SMS, calls, permanent Internet, reading news on Flipboard and social networks.

Outcomes

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is one of the most powerful smartphones today. The new generation has received: a metal frame, top-end hardware, an amazing display and a camera that surprises with its day and night shots, landscapes and macro photography, as well as pictures in HDR mode. If the smartphone also had waterproof functions and would support wireless charging, then more is not needed ... The device is already on sale at - 34,990 rubles.
