Can I change the glass on my phone myself? Replacement of touch glasses, screens on cell phones

An article on how to properly change car glass. Important nuances of the process. At the end of the article - an interesting video about the intricacies of replacing auto glass.

The content of the article:

Replacing car glass is not such a difficult procedure as experts are trying to assure motorists. Having at hand a few tools, high-quality glass, some skills and a little patience, you can replace the auto glass yourself.

Replacing the side glass of the car

In contrast to the windshield, the side windows are more fragile, therefore they break thoroughly - immediately and into small fragments. Scotch tape and film are a good way out, but you still have to install new glass. You can go to the workshop and pay not only for a new window, but also for the work of the master. Or try to do everything yourself.

This will require:

  • new glass;
  • screwdrivers - Phillips, flat, end;
  • latches for fixing the sheathing (it is better not to use the old ones);
  • brush for cleaning splinters and other debris.
Work order
  1. Remove the door trim first. To do this, you should:
    • using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the fixing bolts securing the armrest and remove it;
    • unscrew and remove the window regulator handle (the plastic plug can be easily pushed off and removed with a small thin screwdriver);
    • remove the handle that opens the car door;
    • loosen the fixing elements that hold the upholstery itself and disconnect it from the metal frame of the door.
  2. After the upholstery has been removed, set the power window lever back in place and lock it in the "glass down" position.
  3. Using a socket screwdriver, unscrew the fastening bolts on the "frame", remove the seal and clean the place from glass fragments.
  4. Then move the power window to the "slightly up" mode so that the screws holding the pressure plate are in plain view.
  5. The screws should be loosened, and one of them should be unscrewed completely, pulling the loosely fixed cable to the side.
  6. Take a new glass and, tilting it upside down into the interior, insert it into place. Then fix the glass with the clamping bolts.
  7. Put back the upholstery and the rest of the door elements by repeating all the manipulations in the reverse order.

Features of windshields and their replacement

Unlike the side ones, the windshields are manufactured using special technologies and are reinforced. Their duties include not only the functions of windows, they protect the driver and passengers from external hazards (flying stones, impact in an accident, etc.), and also act as a supporting element for the car body, or rather its roof.

Windshields are manufactured using various technologies and usually consist of two reinforced glasses connected together and having a reinforcing layer. Therefore, such glasses almost never shatter; it takes more than a stone hit or a medium impact.

The protective and fixing qualities of windshields largely depend on the quality of the installation. It is recommended to carry it out in the workshop, entrusting the matter to specialists. Incorrectly placed glass can have deviations according to GOST and quickly fail, warp, fall out or noticeably lose its protective qualities.

But this does not mean that reinstallation cannot be done by yourself. You just need to approach this matter with all responsibility.

Windshield replacement

Required:

  • a string or cutting knife to remove old sealant;
  • new glass;
  • primer mixture;
  • surface degreasing agent;
  • adhesive tape for fixing glass;
  • glue (sealant) for glass installation;
  • pneumatic gun for applying adhesive.
You can purchase everything you need either individually or in a special kit for replacing auto glass.

Work order

Step 1. Remove old glass or its remnants

To do this, you will have to use a special knife or string. They are placed inside and outside the glass and cut the sealant on which it is attached. The main thing in performing this procedure is not to damage the front panel of the passenger compartment.

Step 2. Remove the old glue

This can be done using an ordinary retractable knife sold in hardware stores. It is advisable to remove the old layer completely, but if it is difficult, then the remnants of the used glue will not cause much harm.

Step 3. Degrease the surface

For this purpose, a special composition is included in the kit, but if it is not available, ordinary acetone or another degreasing agent will do.

Step 4. Prime the installation site

There are several nuances to consider here:

  1. Do not apply a primer on the remnants of the old adhesive, only on metal parts of the body.
  2. The primer mixture is applied in one layer, along the line of extrusion of the sealing compound.
  3. A primer is also applied to the glass in the area of \u200b\u200bcontact with the sealant to avoid UV exposure to the latter. Otherwise, the sealant will begin to collapse under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, which will affect the quality of the installation and the life of the glass.
  4. After priming, areas with the remaining old adhesive are degreased.

Step 5. Apply sealant along the gluing line

Pay attention to a few nuances:

  1. If the container for the adhesive sealant does not have a special tip, then the packaging must be cut off, maintaining a large angle so that the contents are squeezed out in the form of a cone tapering upward.
  2. The sealant is applied using an air gun or compressor.
  3. It is recommended to heat the mixture to about 40 degrees before applying.
  4. It should be applied evenly to avoid the formation of voids or lumps of the mixture.

Step 6. Insert and fix the glass

The glass is rubberized along the contour and is applied to the applied sealant and gently pressed. After that, it should be secured with tape and left to dry.

Important points

No matter how the owners and workers of the workshops frightened motorists with the complexity of installing glass in the car, and the latter insisted on the opposite, the truth is somewhere in between. Of course, a person without experience can make a mistake and do something wrong, but with a careful approach and minimal skills, it is quite possible to install glass in a car.

And to minimize the risk of error, you should follow some rules:

  1. Select glass, taking into account the make and model of a particular car.
  2. Follow all instructions on the adhesive packaging carefully.
  3. Since the mixture is very dense, it is advisable to use a high-quality reliable pistol that will not break during work.
  4. Before gluing the glass, you need to attach it to the installation site and check how well it fits by marking the contact points.
  5. The first few days after installation, do not bang the doors (this creates pressure on the glass) or make other harsh manipulations with the machine. It is best to leave it alone until the glue hardens completely.
  6. It is advisable not to leave the car for at least 48 hours after the windows were glued. If this is not possible, you should wait at least a few hours before driving.
  7. In no case should you remove the fixing tape in the first two days; the glass will lose support and may loosen. Therefore, if you plan to go to the road after installation, then the adhesive tape should be chosen transparent so as not to interfere with the view.
  8. The car must not be washed for at least 48 hours, and in general should not be wet, for example, in the rain. This disrupts the curing process of the sealant.
  9. Glue and glass for installation should be purchased only from reliable manufacturers.
  10. The surface for applying the sealant must be absolutely dry.
  11. Use protective gloves to remove old glass so as not to harm yourself. It is also advisable to wear a mask that will protect your eyes. Cracked, unstable glass can cause unpleasant surprises and serious injury.
When choosing auto glass, you should focus primarily on your material capabilities. Of course, branded glasses designed for a specific car make and model are ideal. But the prices for such products are several times higher than the prices for licensed copies. And the latter are often in no way inferior to branded products. Even Russian-made autoglasses have good characteristics, for your price segment, of course.

There are two camps: some argue that you shouldn't change the glass separately from the display, while others, you guessed it, hold the opposite opinion. In this article, we'll go over all the sides.
When you search for "display replacement", you will probably be offered options for replacing glass, the cost of this procedure is always lower than replacing the entire module, and even with that, your original matrix remains. I think those who put themselves cheap copies of displays know that color rendition suffers, viewing angles, and what can I say, there may be problems in the operation of the touchscreen.

It's that simple! I'll go watch a YouTube video and change the glass myself

I hasten to upset you, it is impossible to do this without special equipment. Let's start with the fact that there are two technologies for "gluing" new glass:
The first is with ultraviolet glue.

Cheapness
+ hides micro-scratches on the polarizer

Appearance of yellow spots
-the need to change the backlight
+ color distortion
- not compatible with 3D Touch

It is difficult to evenly distribute this glue over the entire surface of the matrix (this is, of course, imperceptible to the eye), but after a while a yellow spot forms in the place of excess (increase in pressure) of the glue, and this is already unpleasant. Since this is glue, it gets under the backlight (with the exception of amoles), as a result of which stains are visible, some remove the backlight before the procedure or put a new one, in the case of iPhones this is not a problem, since it can be bought everywhere, but if we are talking about Lg, Sony, Meizu, it is quite difficult. And even if you have changed the backlight, there are almost always places where UV rays did not hit the glue and it did not freeze. There is a great chance that with active (and not so) movements of the phone, the backlight will again be flooded with glue.

The second, more modern technology, the use of wasp-film

Pros:
+ the ability to use on any phone model
+ no impact on backlight
+ does not turn yellow
+ even lie down over the entire area

- expensive equipment

The general disadvantages include the risk of damage to the matrix during removal, if the master is experienced, the risk is minimized, but still not zero. In our service center, 95% success in this procedure is a very high indicator.

Is the glass original?

The original is the one that you have installed initially, then there are copies, and they already exist good quality (as they say "original") and poor quality (shops like to call them copy A, the more "A" the more "cooler"). If you are told that this is the original, ask for certificates from the manufacturer's factory, if they are not (and will not be), then these are just empty words. Yes, I understand that those glasses that we change in the service center are as close as possible in quality to the original, but it would not be fair to call them that word in relation to the client. What other service centers happily use, calling everything that they have in the warehouse, the original, and, of course, people go, because there is the "original".

Why so expensive? I know how much glass costs!

Yes, indeed, and the price of the glass itself (touchscreen) is not key in the final cost. In terms of time, replacing the display takes on average 20-40 minutes, depending on the specific model and the skills of the master. Glass replacement increases the repair time by two to three times. It is also necessary to have an experienced specialist, since a small number of masters own this technology ideally.
To replace glass, specialized equipment is needed, the total cost of which is close to megapc.

Why complicate things so much if you can change the module right away?

You always have time to change the module. Take the iPhone 6s display for $ 140, while glass replacement is $ 60. Let's walk through the Chinese, Meizu Pro 6 - $ 155 worth replacing the display module, and $ 55 will cost you glass replacement and there are many such examples on Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, etc. We are engaged in glass replacement on many models. We have not yet touched upon the quality of Chinese display modules, color rendering, viewing angles and other characteristics.

And if it doesn't work out?

During the removal of the display from the frame, cutting on the separator, gluing under the press and in the pressure chamber, the matrix has a large load. We warn the client about all possible risks associated with glass replacement, we give the opportunity to save with a probability of 95%. In 5% of cases, it is necessary to replace the entire display module.

The next article I plan to devote to the technological stages of glass replacement in my service center step by step. The current standard for smartphone display protection includes protective glass and protective film... Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is often difficult for users to decide what to choose. This article describes how to stick protective glass, in which cases it is better than film.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of protective glass include the following factors:

  • High strength. The material perfectly protects the device from minor scratches. Slightly more serious damage to the glass can be with constant wearing with keys and other sharp points, but even then it will not be covered with a cobweb of cracks and scratches.
  • Shockproof. Compared to film, glass is more effective at protecting the display from minor impacts. In defense of the glass: I have a film on my smartphone, and once when it fell from a height of about 120 cm to the iron corner of the horizontal part of the table leg, the film was damaged, but the screen remained intact. Therefore, with glass, you can be sure that nothing happens to the display.
  • Life time. Glass lasts significantly longer than film. And over the years it will not darken and lose transparency.
  • High custom characteristics. Even cheap safety glasses offer impressive performance. There are no traces of glue, the color rendition and response of the sensor remain correct, and there is also a grease-repellent layer.

There are also a number of disadvantages here, including:

  • High cost. Due to a noticeable advantage over the film, glass costs significantly more, often at times. And if the glass is installed by a specialist, you will also have to pay a little extra.
  • Thickening of the device. It would seem that a few millimeters do not play a special role, but no - the overall thickness of the smartphone will increase, it will be noticeable.
  • Possible lack of glass. Not all stores have protective glasses for all models of all mobile devices... Moreover, some of them did not even consider such an opportunity.

Note! Even glass does not guarantee one hundred percent protection, since there is never too much carelessness. In this case, it is better to buy some kind of "armored" Ulefone or AGM.

How to choose

Since the pricing policy is not unitary, it can be assumed that the glasses differ in some intrinsic properties and type, and not just in size according to the smartphone.

There is no single and suitable advice for all cases, which protective glass to choose, since it is more a matter of taste and preference. But there are several positions that you can focus on when choosing.

  1. Safety glasses are of two types: glossy and matte. The former are inexpensive, withstand shocks well, but cope with scratches to a lesser extent. The latter are distinguished by confident durability, do not give glare in the sun, but are purchased at a significantly higher price.
  2. You should always examine the characteristics of the selected glass. Better protection depends on greater thickness, especially in case of falls. It's also worth checking it to make sure it doesn't flex too much. Good glass should have the same oleophobic layer, otherwise the screen will be constantly stained and fingerprints. Also, the set with expensive glass should include special napkins for gluing and spare glasses.
  3. If you have rounded edges on the display, you should choose protective glasses with a 3D effect. They are less common, but they protect the smartphone on the sides with high quality.

How to stick a protective glass on your phone

So, there is a smartphone, glass is purchased. It is not difficult to stick it on, but the process itself should be approached responsibly, otherwise you will have to replace it with a new one.

Important! Before step by step, read the entire instructions and then start the process.

How to remove the protective glass from your phone

If the glass is already glued and needs to be removed due to improper gluing or severe damage, carefully tear off the glass with a plastic card. Then, if necessary, remove the dust with the help of scotch tape, sticking it on the dust and pulling it sharply (but, again, neatly). Then lower and glue the glass back.

Important! You only need to use transparent stationery tape. Not colored, paper or otherwise, as they leave prints on the display.

Screen mobile phone Is a very fragile and important component. Damage to this part makes the operation of the smartphone almost impossible, but what to do if a defect is still received? You can try to take the initiative into your own hands and take on the repair procedures yourself. Being entrepreneurial like this can save you a lot of money. How do I change the glass on my phone? There are instructions that will allow you to repair the device yourself at home. Let's pay attention to these instructions in this article.

Features of repairing glass of a mobile gadget at home

In case of falls, most often the touchscreen takes the whole blow. A huge number of requests to service center is connected with this kind of breakdown.

Important! This prospect is not very encouraging, since some cases of replacement in workshops will cost you half the cost of the mobile phone itself. This situation is caused by the fact that many device models use OGS screens.

In order to divide the display into a touchscreen and a matrix, it will not be enough to acquire the simplest tools (a vacuum suction cup, a Phillips screwdriver, a sharp knife and a thin flat object). All replacement usually occurs in the following order:

  1. Dismantling the device.
  2. Removing the damaged module from the case.
  3. Strong fixation and warming up of the display on special equipment.
  4. Separating the matrix from the touchscreen using a special nylon thread.
  5. Cleaning the matrix from technical glue.
  6. Placement of the component on a special stencil for subsequent application of photopolymer colorless glue.
  7. Placement of the sensor in the stencil to remove excess adhesive between coats.
  8. Irradiation with ultraviolet rays for quick hardening of the glue.
  9. Returning the module to the case and assembling the device in reverse order.

Important! As you may have noticed, without special equipment, you will not be able to repair it yourself. Unfortunately for most users, OGS screens are installed on almost all modern smartphones and all independent attempts to replace them are relevant only if you are interested in gaining experience and do not mind breaking the device at all.

How do I change the protective glass on my phone? If you are still overwhelmed with courage and desire to return the device to stable operation, then there is one way for you.

Replacing OGS glass at home

Disassembly should be taken only by those users who have any experience in this area. It will be very difficult for a beginner to do without new damage. To carry out disassembly, you need to use the following tools and tools at hand:

  • A small set of Phillips and Torx screwdrivers for disassembling the mobile phone case.
  • A plastic spatula, unnecessary debit card, or a guitar pick.
  • The most common hair dryer, capable of warming up the screen somewhere up to 80 degrees Celsius.
  • A thin thread of nylon or a guitar string. You will need these tools to separate the module into its component parts.
  • Work or medical rubber gloves.
  • Rubber suction cup with a ring.
  • Some kind of perforated metal sheet and about a dozen bolts and nuts. The length of the bolts should be somewhere around 2-3 cm.
  • A special glue that cures when exposed to UV (ultraviolet) light.
  • UV lamp, pure alcohol or glass cleaner, and computer wipes.

Important! Curly screwdrivers, technical picks and plastic paddles with suction cups are often supplied with a new touchscreen. It is best to use the above replacement tools.

Replacing glass on your phone yourself looks like this:

  • First you need to disassemble the device case. The task is simplified if the mobile phone is equipped with a removable cover and a battery. After disassembling the case, take a screwdriver and unscrew all the screws that fix the elements on the case. On YouTube, you can find hundreds detailed instructions for this procedure.
  • Now you need to take on the display module itself. We take a hairdryer and warm up the smartphone around the perimeter. We “grab” the module with the suction cup and pull it slightly towards ourselves, not forgetting to warm up the entire structure with a hairdryer. Be careful not to damage the cables when removing the part.
  • Now you need to prepare to lay out the extracted module. Simply place it on a pre-prepared metal plane with holes and screw the bolts around the perimeter of the module so that it does not move.
  • Let's move on to the bundle itself. We take the same hair dryer and thoroughly heat the matrix up to 70-90 degrees Celsius. Now we take a nylon thread or a guitar string in our hands, cling to the edge, and continuing to warm up, “cut” the components.
  • If you succeed, then we clean the matrix from the remnants of the old glue with alcohol and napkins. All this must be done very carefully to avoid damage to the screen.

Important! Gloves should be worn so as not to leave any greasy marks. If the glue layer can be removed without problems, then wipe the component with alcohol again.

  • We smear the matrix with new glue, in accordance with its new touchscreen. Now press lightly on the structure and remove the glue protruding from the sides.
  • For about 30 minutes, you need to irradiate the glue under a UV lamp.
  • We undertake the installation of the module if there are no traces of old glue left. We place the module on the loop and grease the case around the entire perimeter with glue.
  • We glue the whole thing on the case, wait for it to dry and assemble the gadget in the reverse order.

Important! Do not forget to check the functionality of the device

How to replace the protective glass on your phone if it's not OGS technology?

Change the glass on a smartphone

If your device uses a screen with an air gap, then you can safely take on the replacement. This is exactly the case when you can save one hundred percent. But this method also requires a certain base of technical knowledge and the ability to use a soldering iron. You will need all the same tools that were used in the previous method, and you need to follow the following instructions:

  1. We disassemble the phone in the same way as in the previous method.
  2. We remove the screen with a hair dryer, put the suction cup on the touchscreen and remove it.
  3. Now you need to get rid of the damaged part by sending the obsolete component to scrap. After that, we clean all workspaces from glue or tape.
  4. We put a new component. Remove the film from the matrix module before mounting. Thin strips of double-sided tape or B-7000 glue are applied along the perimeter of the structure. Place the sensor in its rightful place and press it down until it dries. Do not forget to remove any drips that have come out.
  5. If a solder was used to fix the module, then we take a soldering iron in our hands and fix the part around the perimeter with solder.
  6. We assemble the entire phone in reverse order and check it for performance.
