Setting up the Internet and Wi-Fi network Rostelecom: features of connecting equipment

Rostelecom is the largest Internet provider in Russia. Depending on the region and the equipment installed in the subscriber's house, it provides access to the global network using one of the following technologies:

• GPON;
• ADSL;
• FTTB.

The method of connecting and configuring the router is different for each of these options.

Rostelecom connection via GPON

GPON is Rostelecom's most promising Internet connection technology. According to this standard, the speed of data reception can be up to 2.5 Gb / s, and data transmission is performed at speeds up to 1.25 Gb / s. Unfortunately, the provider significantly limits the bandwidth. The maximum speed of access via GPON in different cities is indicated in the tariffs on the company's website.

When using this method of connection, an optical fiber is laid into the subscriber's apartment or house. Direct connection to a computer is not possible; a subscriber terminal is required to convert the luminous flux into digital data. This device is provided by the provider, so the user does not bear the additional costs of purchasing the equipment.

Note! During the connection, the Rostelecom master performs a free setting of the GPON terminal.

Setting up a connection using FTTB (Ethernet)

If at your address there is no technical possibility of using GPON, FTTB technology can be used. In this case, communication is also carried out via optical fiber, but it is carried out only up to the junction box in the apartment building. An ordinary network cable (twisted pair) is laid in separate apartments.

This method allows you to directly connect to the Internet any device with an Ethernet connector. A more common connection scheme involves a Wi-Fi router. As in the case of a GPON terminal, it can be rented from a provider. The router connects to a cable from an Internet provider and distributes the Internet to all home devices. The web interface is used to configure the router and set Wi-Fi parameters. The router's IP address, username and password are usually indicated on a sticker on the underside of the device.

Important! You can choose any compatible router to connect to Rostelecom. From the side of the company there are no restrictions on client equipment.

How to connect ADSL from Rostelecom

In small towns, ADSL is often the only connection technology available. This outdated protocol provides information transfer at speeds up to 24 Mbit / s, communication is carried out through a telephone cable. It connects to a modem or ADSL router through which home network devices can access the Internet.

Advice! In addition to an ADSL router, you can also use a universal router. These devices support ADSL and Ethernet connections.
