Flashlights are used for different purposes: in everyday life, construction, travel. Their main characteristics are impact resistance, moisture resistance, luminescence range and directionality of the light beam.

LED flashlights are easy to turn on and carry in your hands. They shine brightly enough, have a high power. For the case, plastic or metal is used.

Plastic flashlights are lightweight, metal - they are not afraid of moisture, dust and shock. Models are equipped with a wrist strap and can focus beams by lengthening or bringing them closer.

Working principle of LED flashlight:

 • An LED consists of semiconductors that convert the incoming current into light radiation. The current is directed only from the anode to the cathode, a pn junction is created.

Electrons meet holes and lose their energy, from which photons are formed. It is necessary that several semiconductors with different types of conductivity interact with each other.

 • A hole is a place in the crystal lattice, after exposure to which electrons move from the upper atomic shells, and a positive charge is formed.

Electrons move towards a positive charge, and holes towards a negative charge. The free space between them is filled with electrons.

 • Electrons and holes by diffusion penetrate through a layer formed in a semiconductor between regions of different conductivity. This is necessary for the concentration of the same number of electrons and holes on both sides of the layer.

In this case, the voltage on the intermediate layer increases. After the recombination of holes and electrons, the barrier decreases to p-n junction, and light energy is released.

How to choose a lantern

 • First you need to decide on the purpose of the lantern. If you need it for your home or summer cottage, a flashlight with accumulation on D-format alkaline batteries will be enough. For camping trips, opt for LED lights.
 • Depending on what you need a lantern for, we determine the required size of the lamp. Handheld pocket devices that will be used in everyday life should be light and compact so that they are easy and convenient to carry with you.

For construction, you should choose lamps that work permanently.

 • When selecting devices, consider the conditions in which you will have to work, hunt, and travel.

For underwater sports, you will need models with a moisture-resistant case; in low temperatures, devices with a special frost-resistant coating are used.

 • Pay attention to the luminous flux. It is not recommended to buy models with too bright light for gardening and household purposes, because with each lumen the amount of energy required for the operation of the device also increases.

For such needs, a flashlight of 10-30 lumens is enough. Cyclists, hunters use lamps of 100 lumens.

 • An important criterion when choosing is the glow time. Choose models with a brightness of 40 lumens from a single AA-battery for four hours.

Compact flashlights, powered by a micro-finger battery, provide 12 lumens of glow for 20 hours.

 • The temperature of the light should be as natural as possible.
 • Choose models equipped with multiple modes. The brightness of the flashlight must adapt to different environmental conditions. This will allow you to decrease and increase the brightness on different sections of the route, to adjust the brightness of the light flux.
 • If you are going to use the flashlight often, opt for devices that run on AA or AAA batteries. Rechargeable models are suitable for household needs.

 • If there are rubber sealing rings on the thread of the luminaire, it means that the device case is moisture resistant. To prevent the flashlight from slipping out of gloves or wet hands, choose mechanisms with a notch on the body.
 • The best case finish is anodized (Type II or Type III). Consider the complete set of the luminaire. Special diffusers are used to diffuse light in different directions, transforming point light into flood light.
 • When choosing a rechargeable flashlight, check how you charge it.

The most common charger that is designed for a household network with a voltage of 220 V, some types of flashlights are charged from a car cigarette lighter with a voltage of 12 V, there are models that can be charged from a USB port.

 • Buy luminaires from the professional series that are reliable, durable and economical. Such devices are equipped with a solid structure and are well equipped.

Best flashlights:

 • have a solid construction;
 • work at low and high temperature conditions;
 • moisture and frost resistant;
 • easily portable;
 • portable and compact;
 • have a beautiful appearance.

 • Store the flashlight in a cool and dry place where you can reach it during a power outage.
 • Batteries should be replaced regularly, even if they have not been used for a long time.
 • It is advisable to have a flashlight in your home and car in case of emergencies. It is recommended to store additional replacement batteries with the instrument.

 • It is not recommended to store flashlights in high temperature conditions, as a result of which the batteries may leak.
 • To avoid overheating the flashlight, do not use it for a long time at maximum operating mode.
 • If you are holding a flashlight and your palm starts to sweat, then you should switch to a gentle mode of operation. It is recommended to replace the thermal grease in the head of the flashlight every 2 years.
 • Before use, check if all parts of the flashlight are tightened tightly. Worn silicone gaskets must be free from defects.

 • As impact-resistant as the flashlight is, try not to drop it on the floor, as this will damage the lens and internal electronics.
 • If parts of the luminaire body become tight, lubricate the rubber rings with silicone oil. When lubricating, it is not recommended to touch the threads due to the rapid accumulation of dirt.
 • If there are spots of a light beam on the lens, wipe the reflector of the flashlight. If it does not turn on, you will need to replace the battery, wipe the threaded elements with cotton swabs and be sure to check the contacts.

 • Children can only use the flashlight under strict adult supervision.
 • It is impossible to direct the light beam directly into the eyes, this leads to visual impairment.
 • Make sure that water and other liquids do not get on batteries or internal parts of the flashlight.
 • Damaged batteries must not be used.
 • Do not leave the device unattended in maximum operating mode.

 • Do not repair the flashlight yourself, it is better to contact a specialist.
 • Modifications to the luminaire are strictly prohibited.
 • Regardless of the functionality of the device, use the devices only for their intended purpose.
 • Be careful with lithium-ion batteries, they may catch fire or explode if short circuit under the influence of high temperatures.

Warranty service for flashlights is provided for a period of 1 to 5 years, depending on the brand and type of product. To do this, you need a warranty card or a purchase receipt.

The warranty will not be provided under the following conditions:

 • the product has been used for other purposes;
 • the rules of operation of mechanisms are violated;
 • low-quality batteries were used;
 • the battery has leaked;
 • there are traces of mechanical damage on the device body.

LED Flashlight Repair:

 • Does not turn on or flickers during operation. One solution is to screw the threaded elements. Check the battery, it may be out of order. To do this, unscrew the back cover of the flashlight and close the case.
 • If the problem is in the modular button, insert round-nose pliers or fine scissors into the holes and turn clockwise.
 • Check how tightly the LED module fits inside the case; loose fastening is quite common. To correct this, use round nose pliers or pliers to turn the module clockwise until it stops.

You should be extremely careful, otherwise you can damage the LED.

 • If the lamp gives off a dim light, most likely the problem is in the breakdown of the driver - the system that controls the lamp modes and is responsible for supplying voltage. To fix this problem, remove the burned-out driver, replace it with a new one.
 • To check the operation of the LED, you should bring a voltage of 4.2 V to the contact pads of the LED. If it does not burn well, you should replace it with a new element.

Daylight hours are getting shorter, nights are longer. It's time to talk about lanterns.
This is the second most important piece of equipment (after the knife). Cavers, night orienteers and the military know best what a good flashlight is. Ask them.
ANSI FL1-2009 describes methods for measuring the basic characteristics of hand lamps, headlamps and spotlights providing directional light.
Let's highlight the main characteristics of the lanterns:
1. Type and number of light sources, their power. Compact incandescent bulbs and LEDs giving white, blue, red light. LED has already become firmly established in the catalogs of all manufacturers.
2. Type and number of batteries. 1 to 4 alkaline / lithium batteries or rechargeable batteries. Built-in or standard sizes (CR2032, AAA, AA, CR123A, etc.).
3. Degree of protection according to IP (protection of the case against dust and moisture) and shock resistance. Protection against water is an important indicator. For example, IPX4 is splash proof in any direction, and IPX8 is protection when submerged more than 1 meter for up to 4 hours.
4. Weight. For a headlamp, weight is important. Often, the manufacturer removes the battery compartment on the back of the head or on the belt. The average weight of compact lanterns is from 50 to 150 grams.
5. Appointment. For night orienteering and running, for every day (EDC), for spear and general hunting, for cycling, tactical and more.
6. Design and body material. A popular design is a headlamp with a plastic body with elastic band. Hand torches are made of aluminum alloys, stainless steel and ABS plastic.
Modern flashlights carry a whole minicomputer with the program on board, do not reduce brightness as the batteries are discharged, and can operate at several power levels. Flashlights often have special signals for tactical or emergency use - for example, strobe, emergency beacon, SOS signal.

German lighting company. The assortment includes both headlamps and classic hand lamps. You can search in foreign online stores.
Here is a review of the TL257 model: "This flashlight .. shines with a powerful, well-shaped light spot, not narrow. 2 lighting zones, reliable, really works for a long time from 1 set of AA3pcs batteries, very comfortable to wear, that after 5 minutes you forget that it is on your head, the tilt angle is small , but it is optimal for illumination of the near and far zones. The block for the batteries is at the back of the head, which balances the flashlight on the head, the power wire to the flashlight is thick with a twisted (spring), the button is tight enough, which can be a disadvantage with frequent switching off to save electricity but involuntary on and off are also excluded.Very reliable, solid design, without unnecessary moving, rubbing parts, high-quality, rough, pleasant to the touch rubber-plastic. In general, I advise and recommend. " Find it in the Russian Federation?

Model overview

A tactical flashlight is one of the best self-defense equipment you can carry with you.

Why?

83% of our senses are information from our eyes, and in about 50% of cases, violent crimes occur at night when our vision is limited. The presence of a bright flashlight allows you to identify a threat, instantly blind the enemy and get additional time for action.

This article is not just a roundup of reviews on Amazon, we bought all the models in question and tested them for comfort in everyday wear, drop strength and water resistance. Plus photos of how they actually shine, which is much more useful than just the manufacturer's stated wattage.

We will start with what we believe " tactical flashlight”, And compare the top 5 under $ 100 to see which one is really the best.

If you are impatient, here are the results of our choice:

Lamp The main plus Lumens Price
Nitecore MH25GT Best range 1000 lm 80$
ThruNite TN12 Best overall 1100 lm 46$
Fenix PD35 TAC Best overall (premium) 1000 lm 83$
Nitecore MT10A The most compact 920 lm 56$
Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA Simplest 350 lm 45$

What is a tactical flashlight?

In addition to being of high quality and well balanced in performance, we believe that it should also provide the owner with a strategic advantage in a potentially dangerous situation.

Tactical flashlights usually turned on with an end button, which allows you to do this quickly; they are bright enough to momentarily blind an aggressor, and are designed to withstand harsh external influences.

Our selection criteria

Considering LED lighting technology, we prefer that tactical flashlights had at least 500 lumens, and good range, but were small enough to be easily gripped with one hand with a pistol in the other if needed.

Having established these criteria, we began to look for lanterns of trusted brands, with 50+ reviews and at least 4.5 stars rating on Amazon. We also deliberately selected products different manufacturersto achieve both diversity and fairness in assessment.

As for the price, we set a $ 100 cap because we wanted to show the best selection in a more affordable segment of the market. If you don't look back at the price, we recommend the Surefire P3x Fury Tactical ($ 250).

What is Lumen?

Lumen (lm) - emitted by a source in a given area for set time... The more lumens, the brighter the light. One lumen is equal to the amount of light received in an area of one square foot (0.09 square meters) at a distance of one foot (0.3 m) from a burning candle.

A 100 W incandescent lamp generates about 1600 lumens. And a standard car headlight is from 700 to 1200 lumens. This information does not really help you imagine what you are buying, so we will accompany the article with a photo with light from each of the samples.

Batteries

They are often forgotten, but a lot depends on the type of batteries - and the cost, and the performance, and the battery life ... sometimes the key factor in the decision to buy is what batteries are used in lantern.

Besides traditional alkaline batteries (AAA, AA, C, D), most modern lanterns to improve energy efficiency, the following are used:

CR123: 3V high output lithium battery commonly used in high performance electronics. A good quality CR123 battery can last up to 10 years and usually costs between $ 1 and $ 2 apiece.

18650 (18mm x 65mm): 3.7V, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. They are used in Tesla Model S sedans, by the way. Usually they cost between $ 3 and $ 6 apiece. Many flashlights use either one 18650 or two CR123s.

14500 (14mm x 50mm): 3.7V rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the same size as traditional AA batteries. They usually cost between $ 2 and $ 6 apiece.

Evaluation criteria for tactical flashlights

We decided to evaluate the selected lanterns by three parameters:

 1. Light flow
 2. Ease of use
 3. Wearing comfort

To assess usability, we look at how easy it is to turn on and off lamp, switch between modes, hold it at the same time with the gun, etc. To assess the convenience of wearing - its various methods, including storage in a holster, in a belt bag, in a pocket and others.

But enough of the introduction, let's review our first candidate!

1.Nitecore MH25GT: tactical flashlight with the best range

 • Pros: beam range 452 m, mini-USB charging, mode change by turning the case
 • Minuses: big size rim
 • Ease of Use: 8/10
 • Wearing comfort: 5/10
 • Luminous flux: 1000 lm

This lantern the longest illumination range we have seen on the market so far, with a maximum range of 452 m. The larger head diameter allows the light to be focused into a stronger beam. If I had a ranch or a large plot, I would prefer this particular model as my lantern for night traversing the terrain.

Plus, a lot of useful things come with it.

Often when walking in the dark, it is helpful to preserve your adapted night vision by using low light. It also avoids attracting attention and avoiding enemy detection. However, the moment you notice movement ahead, you need the ability to switch to a stronger light to clearly identify the threat.

This flashlight quickly switches between two user-defined modes by rotating the head and rear of the hull, making it easy to use for such maneuvers. I set my MH25GT to 1000lm and 50lm for target detection and night vision preservation respectively.

Ray lantern remains sharply focused even far away from the source.

It runs on a standard 18650 lithium-ion battery, or two CR123 batteries. Head part lantern slightly larger than the case diameter, so we think that the best way wearing it - in a holster.

Mini-USB charging is another useful feature, with it you do not need to buy an additional charger for the battery, or take it with you in case of a trip. The case has a charging hole and a red indicator light next to it.

2. ThruNite TN12 2016 XP-L: Best overall

 • Pros: Affordable price, ease of wearing and use, 0.4 lumen firefly mode
 • Cons: Heats up in "turbo" mode
 • Ease of Use: 8/10
 • Wearing comfort: 6/10
 • Luminous flux: 1100 lm

Flashlight ThruNite TN12 is good enough in all respects. At less than $ 50, it's compact, lightweight and durable.

The TN12 is powered by a standard 18650 lithium-ion battery or two CR123 batteries. Has several modes:

 • Turbo - 1100 lm
 • High power - 435 lumens
 • Average - 175 lm
 • Low - 18 lm
 • "Firefly" - 0.4 lm

Holding the switch for a second activates the strobe mode. I usually used it at high power (435 lumens), from it to the "Turbo" mode, just one click. Its lighting area is quite wide, and the light is evenly distributed over it.

Firefly mode (0.4 lumens) is ideal lighting for a night out in the bush while camping. Glows dim, allows you to preserve night vision, and also almost does not consume battery power, which allows you to use flashlight without recharging up to 74 days, according to the manufacturer.

After about 3 minutes, the bezel heats up noticeably, after 6 - so much that it is extremely unpleasant to touch it. I stopped this test somewhere around 8 minutes because I didn't want to lantern something broke from overheating.

All in all, due to price and uniform lighting, this is the best choice.

3. Fenix PD35 TAC: Best overall (premium)

 • Pros: Convenient to carry, mini USB charging available
 • Cons: minimum luminous flux - 8 lm, it is difficult to find the mode switch by touch
 • Ease of Use: 7/10
 • Wearing comfort: 6/10
 • Luminous flux: 1000 lm

The Fenix PD35 TAC is not bad in all respects. It is sold in different trim levels, itself flashlight costs about $ 65, but we advise you to take with it a 18650 lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a mini-USB without an additional charger. Useful when traveling, and simply if there is no charging at hand. You can also use 2 CR123 batteries for power.

Has several modes:

 • Turbo - 1000 lm
 • High power - 500 lumens
 • Average - 200 lm
 • Low - 60 lm
 • "Eco" - 8 lm

Holding the switch for a second activates the strobe mode.

The power button is in an understandable place and works properly, it is worth pressing halfway - and everything instantly turns on and off without problems. But the mode switch does not stand out much on the relief of the case, so it is not always possible to find it by touch.

Compared to ThruNite, the TN12 does not heat up so much in Turbo mode, and automatically switches from it to high power mode after 5 minutes of use, which allowed me to leave flashlight turned on for half an hour without the risk of overheating and breakdown.

If you are used to using flashlight in "night" mode, the minimum luminous flux of 8 lm on "Eco" may seem too bright. It provides more light than is needed for a person with well-adjusted night vision.

The scattered light from this lantern enough to illuminate an entire room, at the same time, the concentration of the beam in the center is sufficient to illuminate a confined area well, even at a great distance.

The fenix PD35 TAC fits into our criteria for a decent tactical flashlight, but due to its high price in the bundle with the battery, we have allocated it to the category of "best overall" with the mark "premium".

4. Nitecore MT10A: the most compact

 • Pros: small size, with a maximum of 920 lumens, there is a mode with red light, uses both IMR 14500 and AA batteries
 • Cons: not found
 • Ease of Use: 7/10
 • Wearing comfort: 8/10
 • Luminous flux: 920 lm

Nitecore MT10A - compact flashlightSuitable for continuous wear, with useful red light mode.

Flashlight about the size of an adult's palm, fits perfectly in your pocket. So I wore it - as a pocket flashlight for every day - and at the same time, it shines brightly enough to be used as a direct tactical.

It's also a great hiking flashlight, its red light allows the user to maintain night vision, and also remain invisible in the dark, since such light is not visible from afar.

Note that to operate in 920 lumen mode, power is required from IMR 14500 batteries, they are the same size as AA, but with a higher output power. AA batteries only last for 170 lumens. IMR 14500 usually cost from 4 to 10 dollars, depending on quality and manufacturer.

List of modes (when using suitable batteries):

 • Turbo - 920 lm
 • High power - 500 lumens
 • Medium - 180 lm
 • Low - 70 lm
 • Minimum - 1 lm
 • Red light (I would rate it at about 0.5 lumens)

It creates a partially focused beam that is useful for finding and general lighting areas.

After three minutes in Turbo mode, it automatically switches to 500 lm to prevent overheating.

The manufacturer's instructions say “do not use the IMR 14500 with low power”, which is a bit strange, isn't it? What really meant was that you shouldn't leave flashlight turned on and let it discharge completely, but, of course, you can use it in low-power modes. Apparently, somewhere in the translations, the instructions were mistaken.

5. Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA: the simplest and most compact

 • Pros: small size, inexpensive, uses both AA and CR123 batteries, all operations are done with one button
 • Cons: few modes
 • Ease of Use: 8/10
 • Wearing comfort: 9/10
 • Luminous flux: 350 lm

The Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA is great for continuous wear, small and discreetly placed in your pocket. And the ProTac line has over 6,600 reviews with a 4.5 rating on Amazon.

One of the biggest advantages of this flashlight is that it can be powered from both AA batteries (or the same size rechargeable IMR 14500) and CR123. This makes it ideal as flashlight for an alarm kit, since AA batteries are easy to get anywhere.

Has three modes:

 • High power - 350 lumens
 • Stroboscope - 350 lm
 • Low power - 40 lumens (with CR123 batteries)

They are switched with the end button. Some users like this simplicity, others may find it inconvenient due to the need to constantly cycle through modes to get to low power, if it is used most often.

Compared with flashlights, capable of delivering 1000 lumens each, this 350 lumen does not get so hot. After half an hour of work in this mode, you feel warmth from it, but the temperature does not increase.

And despite the fact that we initially declared at least 500 lumens as a criterion for counting flashlight "Tactical", we just liked this one so much that we could not help but include it in the list.

Our pick as small but powerful enough tactical flashlight.

Test for water resistance and strength

To make sure that these qualities are in flashlights correspond to the manufacturers' declared ones, we conducted a series of simple tests with immersion in water and falling from a low height.

By including lanterns, they were dropped from a height of about one and a half meters onto a concrete floor 5 times:

 • 3 - light down (as it is likely to fall from a hand or pocket in natural conditions)
 • 1 - light up
 • 1 - sideways

After that, we turned on each one and checked if it still works in all modes. As you can see in the photo, several scratches have appeared on the cases, but all the lights shine as expected.

After that, we placed the flashlights in a container with water at room temperature and held it for half an hour, and then we checked each one again in all modes.

Again, everyone passed the test. There are more than 5 in the photo, because we were simultaneously running tests for another article.

findings

Product development is always about finding a compromise. Depending on what you are looking for, we have different suggestions:

 • If needed flashlight with a long range - Nitecore MH25GT fit better Total.
 • AND ThruNite TN12and Fenix PD35 TAC are standard tactical flashlights, though TN12 easier to use and cheaper.
 • If you want a small and handy pocket flashlight with good "night" lighting mode, it will suit you Nitecore MT10A.
 • AND Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA for those who prefer to work with one button.
