Rostelecom GPON technology: description, equipment

Internet technologies are developing steadily, as a result, Rostelecom's clients can use network resources at high speed. Recently, a new GPON technology has appeared on the market, which is provided by the operator Rostelecom. This method involves the use of optical lines that are laid in each house. As a result, all the operator's clients can use a universal communication channel, which is characterized by increased bandwidth.

How old technologies work

GPON from Rostelecom appeared and became available for connection relatively recently. Previously, Internet connection using ETTN technology was increasingly used. Even earlier, the operator's clients connected to the Internet using high-speed ADSL technology. This method is based on the use of ordinary telephone lines. At the same time, information transfer and voice communication functioned separately. One channel did not interfere with the normal operation of other communication channels.

The above ADSL connection method still works, however, in some areas of the country, the operator Rostelecom uses GPON and ETTH technologies to serve customers. This is due to the fact that ADSL has a number of negative aspects:

• They depend on the level of quality of the functioning of telephone lines, which do not always work well. This leads to noise due to malfunctions and leaks of any kind. All this does not correlate with the concept of stable communication.
• The connection depends on the presence of a telephone line, so if it is not in the house, then there will be no Internet connection in it. In addition, it is impossible to draw a line, but use only the Internet connection (you will have to pay for the phone too).
• The functioning of the connection depends on how long the line is. The greater the distance from the exchange, the more faults in signal reception and the greater the likelihood of noise. This causes remote clients to Rostelecom cannot use high speed (under optimal conditions up to 24 Mbps).

ADSL technology as well as GPON technology are suitable for digital TV connection. However, if the modem is too far away from the station, there simply will not be enough speed to receive a television signal.

In order to lay ordinary lines based on fiber optics in every home, you need to spend a lot of money. Cabling requires the use of expensive equipment. This leads to the use of FTTH technology before the appearance of GPON method. At that time, fiber optics was also laid to high-rise buildings, special servers were installed, and twisted pairs were already pulled from them to apartments. This connection method is actively used by the Rostelecom provider at the moment.

GPON technology from the specified operator (as well as from other companies) has become a new step in the development of Internet connection. It helps to lay optical fiber from provider equipment directly to each individual apartment. GPON is a passive fiber-based network, where the speed reaches the level of 1 Gb per second. Optical fiber has a higher bandwidth. Such lines are not prone to decay, because they are not affected by the atmosphere, as is the case with telephone lines.

Information is transmitted to the GPON using light pulses. In order to connect the provider's clients, passive-type splitters are used, which are cheap. The maximum speed indicated above is not needed in practice. However this technology is truly versatile, ensuring connection to:

• Internet.
• Digital TV.
• Stationary telephony.

To connect a landline telephone, a special adapter is used, and communication with digital PBXs is based on optical fiber.

What equipment is needed to connect

GPON technology is not available in all Russian cities. But where this access is provided, customers of the Rostelecom provider can use the connection at high speed. You need to rent or buy a special router that supports fiber connection. You can find out which models provide this from Rostelecom employees.

The presence of configured equipment that is connected to the optical network allows you to connect subscriber devices (TV, smartphones, PCs) in a wired or wireless (wi-fi) way. If you need to use a regular phone, connect it to a special port located on the back of the router.

This technology receives good reviews from Rostelecom customers who are satisfied with inexpensive tariff plans and increased speed. In addition, negative responses can be found on the Internet, which indicate that the declared maximum speed does not correspond to reality, and the technology itself is not available in many regions.

You need to learn the details and read the responses of subscribers about GPON technology at least in order to make sure that many of the provider's clients are not serious and do not have an adequate attitude. They often don't like the real little things - 99 Mbps instead of hundreds, or insufficiently accurate placement of the router in the apartment, which deviates by a couple of millimeters.
