GPON technology from Rostelecom

Technological developments allowing access to the Internet are constantly being improved. As a result of these transformations, Rostelecom customers can regularly use network resources at high speeds. A couple of years ago, GPON technology from Rostelecom entered the Internet services market. It is the use of optical communication to connect to the Internet, laid by each subscriber in his household. As a result, a unique communication channel with the highest speed of operation is transferred to a single subscriber for personal use.

The GPON technology implemented by Rostelecom entered the market not so long ago. Before the release of the new technology, ETTH dominated the market. Before it, subscribers were connected to the Internet according to the ADSL technology principle. I must say that ADSL for its time period would be a real technological revolution. This method of communication worked over the standard line over which telephone communications functioned. The transmission of voice traffic and data via ADSL was carried out separately.

ADSL works to this day, but in some regions Rostelecom connects via ETTH and GPON.

In addition to a large number of advantages, ADSL technology also has disadvantages:

  • Communication depends on the condition of the lines, and they are often physically worn out. In this regard, any nature of the fault interferes with the stability of the connection.
  • To connect, you need a telephone line - if there is no telephone connection in the house (apartment), then there will be no Internet there either. Plus, you can’t use the Internet exclusively, you have to pay for 2 services.
  • Dependence on the size of the lines - the farther the connection point is from the PBX, the worse the reception quality. Because of these limitations, the far site cannot rely on the maximum connection speed (ideally 24 Mbps).

With the help of ADSL, as well as GPON, it is possible to connect digital television. But if the modem is located at a distance from the station, then the speed will not be enough to transmit the signal.

Installing standard fiber into every home is a significant expense. In this connection, before the development of GPON, specialists took FTTH as the basis, in this case, fiber optics was brought into a high-rise building, servers were installed there, and all apartments were actually connected from them. Rostelecom still uses this principle of connection.

GPON technology from Rostelecom and other providers in Russia has become truly breakthrough. It makes it possible to lay optical fiber from network equipment directly to a single apartment (house). GPON is an optical network with a reception rate of up to 1 Gb / s. The optical fiber itself is endowed with a gigantic ability to transmit a signal, and, unlike a telephone line, it does not rot and does not depend on environmental factors.

Data transmission over GPON is carried out using pulses. And in order to connect a new subscriber, specialists take passive splitters, which are easy to use and are inexpensive. As we noted earlier, the maximum speed can be equal to 1 Gb / s, but in today's realities such bandwidth is of little demand. But GPON from Rostelecom is extremely versatile, as it provides three services at the same time:

  • Internet;
  • DH (digital TV);
  • Telephony.

To connect a home phone, take adapters and connect them via a passive line.

Equipment required for connection

Anyone can connect to Rostelecom's GPON, regardless of their area of residence. Rostelecom provides such an opportunity. Of course, not every small town has the technology, but if it is available, subscribers enjoy working on the Internet at high speed. To experience all the benefits of breakthrough technology, you need to rent or buy a router that can receive a signal from fiber optics.

Properly configured and connected to the network equipment makes it possible to connect computers, mobile equipment and, of course, TV to it both using wires and via Wi-Fi. If you want to connect a home phone, you must connect the machine to the correct port on the back of the router.
