With hundreds of touchscreen mobile devices passing through your hands, it's hard to admire the look of a mid-range smartphone.

Its design can be called simple and practical, in any case, the developers have done everything to avoid ambiguous and controversial decisions.

In addition to the display, the front-facing camera, light and proximity sensors, a speaker, as well as two touch-sensitive return and search buttons plus a hardware key for returning to the main screen are placed on the front panel of the device.

The back panel is partially made of metal; it houses the speaker, camera lens and flash.

On the side faces you will see buttons for volume control, display lock and camera activation, for which the designers should say special thanks.

On the top of the smartphone there is an input for connecting standard headphones, and on the bottom there is a connector for charging and a microUSB cable.

Display

One of the main advantages of this model is the 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and support for multi-touch, which is characterized by an incredibly high level of brightness and very accurate black display.

For comparison: the main competitor Nokia Lumia 800 has the same diagonal and resolution, but the matrix, made on the basis of AMOLED technology, gives a less attractive picture.

Ergonomics

The Windows Phone 7.5 on-screen keyboard needs some work: when typing horizontally, it does not take up the entire screen area, and as a result, its buttons were not large enough.

There are no other complaints: the buttons respond quickly to touch, the input language is switched with one touch, and, if desired, you can add emoticons to the text.

The sound of the smartphone is quite clear and spacious, but, at the same time, some users may think that it lacks volume. However, this problem can be easily solved with high quality headphones.

As always, when writing tests for devices running Windows Phone, we say hello to software developers and Microsoft in general: guys, we still need an available screenshot program, and you still do not rush to do it. Maybe you should channel the energy of the Windows Phone software development contestants in the right direction? Moreover, such a program is needed not only for us, but also for users.

Interface

The novelty runs under the Windows Phone 7.5 operating system and the Metro interface, which we have already talked about in the review and video of the HTC Titan smartphone.

We believe that this is quite enough for a model that belongs to the mid-price range - the device will not slow down even if you open several applications at the same time, and it will easily cope with online video playback.

Camera

The 5 MP camera with autofocus and flash makes a very good impression and is one of the best cameras of its kind that we have tested.

It knows how to shoot in macro mode, allows you to adjust white balance, contrast, sharpness and ISO level, supports selective focus, and also has a high speed of operation.

To make the process of taking photos more interesting, the smartphone received two applications - FunShot and Photo Studio.

The former offers 12 different photo effects, while the latter will help you edit a photo, take a panoramic photo, use original frames and filters, and share your photo on Facebook, Photobucket or Picasa.

The communication set of the device looks modest, but it has everything you need: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS modules and a microUSB connector.

Entertainment

The set of entertainment functions is standard for smartphones running the Windows Phone OS - an audio and video player, as well as an FM receiver.

To store user-generated content, 8 GB of non-expandable internal memory is allocated, and in order to upload music or video to your smartphone, you need to install the Zune program on your computer.

Working hours

With moderate use, the lithium-ion battery will last about two days without recharging.

Positioning

Last week the presentation of Windows Phone 7 smartphone Samsung Omnia W GT-i8350 took place in the central Euroset store. This is the first device of the company, which went on sale in Russia. The recommended retail price is 14,990 rubles.

The novelty practically does not differ from its counterparts, but it is a fairly balanced proposal, in my opinion. For example, HTC Mozart, the first WP7 smartphone in Russia, has a 1 GHz processor and an S-LCD screen matrix, while Samsung Omnia has 1.4 GHz and Super AMOLED, but the price difference is quite small. Nokia Lumia is more expensive - 21,000 rubles, and HTC TiTAN has gone completely ahead - about 27,000 rubles.

By the way, by default, Samsung Omnia W does not have Bing (the brainchild of Microsoft) installed, but the more familiar search giant Yandex. In general, a profitable cooperation: they are the OS for us, and we are the search engine for them.

Since we have already reviewed the Windows Phone mobile operating system and the Mango add-on, in this test we will only talk about the key points of the Samsung i8350.

Design, build quality, controls

The smartphone is a classic candy bar 115x58 mm in size, 10.9 mm thick (HTC Mozart - 119x60x11.9 mm, Nokia Lumia - 116x61x12.1 mm) and a light weight of 115 grams (Mozart - 130 g, Lumia - 142 g).

The device is made of black semi-glossy plastic. It looks durable. Part of the back cover is made of metal. The screen is protected by a special material that prevents scratches from sharp objects (not Gorilla Glass). As with most devices, the display is abundantly covered with fingerprints, but they are easily erased. The assembled Omnia is excellent: no backlash was observed in two weeks of close communication. However, a slight crunch is heard when squeezed. It is necessary to clarify that I had a non-commercial sample, therefore, in the “sale” version, most likely, the situation will be different. At least those smartphones that I looked at in the store did not play, did not creak or crunch.

It fits well in the hand thanks to the smooth transition of the back of the surface to the front, and the small edging around the perimeter does not cause discomfort to the ear during a conversation. For example, on Samsung Note I felt it. Actually, this edging serves for less contact of the screen with any surface.

On the front panel at the top there are light and proximity sensors. They react quickly, there were no problems. Next to them is a front camera for video calls. There is also a speaker. It is loud, the interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly. There are two touch-sensitive buttons under the screen: "Back" and "Search". Long hold "Back" brings up a menu with previously launched applications. "Search", as mentioned above, launches not the Bing search engine, but Yandex. The backlight is white, bright, but does not blind your eyes at night. It is activated only when you press one of the keys and goes out after 5 seconds. In the center there is a mechanical button "Start" - it returns to the "Home screen" from any menu. It has an oval shape, soft pressure, and small stroke.

At the bottom there is a microUSB connector (for data synchronization and charger connection) and a microphone. On the left side there is a thin and long volume rocker key. On the right is the phone on / off button (display lock), as well as the camera activation button. It can launch the Camera application even when the phone is locked. To do this, you need to set certain parameters: "Settings" - "Applications" - "Photo + camera". The presence of a separate button for taking pictures in a smartphone is an indisputable plus of the device.

At the top: a standard 3.5 mm audio output for headphones and an additional microphone for noise cancellation.

The speaker, camera peephole and flash are on the back.

In order to remove the cover, you must pry it by the groove on the right side. The sim card is not inserted under the battery, i.e. can be pulled out "hot". However, it will not work in this way - you need to restart the phone. Judging by the contact connecting the device and the back metal cover, the latter is an antenna.

In general, I can note that the design will be ergonomic.

Screen

Display diagonal 3.7 "(physical size 80x48 mm), standard resolution for WP7 smartphones - 480x800 pixels, while the density is 252 pixels per inch - the same figure for HTC Mozart (HTC Radar - 246 pixels per inch, since the diagonal is 3.8 "). Supports display of 16 million color shades. There is a multitouch ("multitiuch") - 4 simultaneous touches.

The matrix is \u200b\u200bmade using Super AMOLED technology (Super Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode). It is also installed on Nokia Lumia 800 and other smartphones. We are faced with PenTile again. The advantages of this technology are undeniable: high brightness and long operating time (meaning - until the pixels fail). However, there is a weak side: due to the special arrangement of pixels (not traditional RGB, but RGBG), the clarity is lower than on a TFT matrix. This is especially noticeable when browsing the Internet, where the small print looks somewhat loose.

The viewing angles of the screen are large, under slopes the colors are practically not distorted, only the picture acquires a slightly bluish tint. The "depth" of black is maximum thanks to Super AMOLED, so blacks and whites look more natural than on S-LCD or conventional TFT-LCD-matrix. Brightness high, manually adjustable (three levels - low, medium and high) or by a light sensor. By the way, I noticed an interesting feature: when most of the screen is occupied by a light background, the phone slightly dims the brightness, when the dark one increases it.

When comparing the displays of the Samsung i9000 and the Samsung Omnia, it turns out that the latter produces richer colors. Both screens behave perfectly in the sun, information is read without problems.

In the "Lock + background" settings, the value for turning off the display backlight is set from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. There you can also set the phone lock password and change the background of the Lock Screen.

* - the brightness of the Nokia 700 display at maximum brightness is higher than in the photo. This is due to the fact that I took the frames in the dark, and the phone's light sensor dimmed the display backlight slightly.

Camera

The Samsung i8350 has a 5 megapixel camera module. There is a one-section light-emitting diode (LED) backlight. There is a front-facing VGA camera for video calls (HTC Mozart does not have one, but Radar does, but it costs more than Samsung). Photo resolution - 2560x1920 pixels, videos - 1280x720 at 30 frames per second.

Below you will find comparative photos on Nokia 700 (FullFocus), Samsung Ace and Samsung Omnia W. Judging by the test frames, Omnia is slightly inferior to Ace in detail, but the speed of the camera is much faster. In general, the quality of the images is very good: the correct white balance, minimal geometric distortion and color noise, as well as the absence of chromatic aberrations (although they will hardly be noticeable at a wide angle).

From the EXIF \u200b\u200bfile, we managed to find out that ISO automatically sets from 50 to 200. Manually, ISO is selected 50, 100, 200 and 400. In this case, the shutter speed value can be from 1/8 to 1/700. It turns out that the device for some reason does not want to select, for example, on the ISO \u003d 400 machine and set the shutter speed as low as possible.

The average photo file size is 1.5 MB, which is sufficient JPEG compression to avoid artifacts. The flash shines about 1.5 - 2 meters. It only works when shooting.

Focusing is carried out in automatic mode when you touch the screen or press the mechanical button on the right side of the device halfway.

The Camera app interface looks the same as on all Windows Phone 7 devices. Unlike HTC smartphones, the settings lack the "Panorama", "Burst" and "Face Recognition" modes. They can be partially implemented in the Photo Studio application. It also allows you to make a "photo", "beautiful picture", "plus me", "dream shot" and "panoramic shot". The program has a photo editor: exposure alignment, brightness and contrast adjustment, color gamut, rotation and cropping.

When shooting videos, the following options are available: white balance, effects, contrast, saturation, sharpness, exposure, quality and size. Note that by default all Windows phones select VGA resolution every time the camera is started. Therefore, be careful and do not forget to switch (if, of course, it is necessary) to HD 720p. The video quality is good and comparable, for example, to the Samsung i9000. The sound is definitely better on the Omnia than on the HTC Mozart or HTC Radar.

Autonomous work

Unlike HTC Mozart and Radar, the Samsung Omnia W has a removable 1500mAh lithium-ion battery. Model - EB484659VU. It is also in Samsung Galaxy W, Samsung Xcover, Samsung Wave 3. The manufacturer claims that the Omnia W will work up to seven hours in the talk mode, and up to 370 hours in the standby mode.

According to my experimental data, in the talk mode the battery sat down after about five and a half hours, in the video playback mode at maximum brightness (high sound level, output to the speaker) it was discharged in about 4 hours, and for 17 hours there was enough music playback in headphones at maximum volume.

On average, the battery life was a little less than a day. My scheme of using the Samsung i8350 was as follows: 15-20 minutes of talks a day, about two hours of listening to music, about an hour of watching videos, the same amount of camera use, four hours of working with a Wi-Fi network (twitter, mail, installing applications).

You can charge the device from USB in 2.5 hours or from the network in a little less time.

To conserve battery power, a number of services are disabled on your phone. Thus, you will not receive mail and programs will not be able to run in the background. At the same time, calls, sending SMS, as well as downloading mail manually are available. There are two items to choose from:

Moreover, there is information about the remaining charge level (in percent), an estimate of the remaining time and from the last charge (days and hours).

Performance

The Samsung Omnia W smartphone is powered by Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset. It is codenamed Snapdragon S2, ARMv7 architecture and 45nm process technology. The clock speed of the overclocked single-core processor is 1400 MHz. The same processor is installed in Nokia Lumia 800. HTC Mozart - 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 - of the previous generation, HTC Radar - 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 (not overclocked), HTC TiTAN –1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255, most likely, with the T prefix ( 8255T).

The graphics accelerator in Omnia is Adreno 205 with support for OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenVG 1.1, EGL 1.3, Direct3D Mobile and Direct Draw.

The increased frequency of the processor in the usual "communication" with the device is imperceptible, all devices based on Windows Phone work quite quickly and without brakes. However, the speed of loading sites has increased: for example, HTC Mozart opens the same page in 6-7 seconds, while Samsung needs only 3-4. I did not observe the difference in the speed of launching applications.

Interfaces

The device operates in 2G (850/900/1800/1900) and 3G (900/2100) networks, supports data transmission standards GPRS, EDGE (class 32), HSDPA (up to 14.4 Mbps) and HSUPA (5.76 Mbps) ... Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth version 2.1 with A2DP (AVRCP, HFP, HSP, PBAP), microUSB 2.0 are present. The phone has a Wireless application. When this mode is enabled, the device acts as a 3G-Wi-Fi router.

When you connect Samsung to your PC, the system will automatically prompt you to install a special software for data synchronization - "Zune". Without it, the phone is not even detected as USB-Flash. Navigation

The Omnia W has a GPS module (seventh generation gpsONE, “Seventh-generation gpsOne GPS module”) and a Russian navigation module GLONASS. The device also supports hardware-software navigation solution "gpsOneXTRA Assistance". To work with navigation, the application "Maps" (Bing Maps) is provided. There are no settings, only location determination. The "cold" start time is about 1-2 minutes, "hot" - up to 5 seconds.

It is difficult to understand whether GLONASS works together with GPS, since the built-in program does not display satellites, but the location determination speed is slightly higher than on its closest competitors.

Applications

In this section, I will list only those applications that are installed specifically on the Samsung Omnia W.

Now... Analogue of the HTC hub. Displays animated weather (for today and the next three), news (unfortunately, there is no Russian channel, only European ones), stocks, currency (rates, conversions) and main tweets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Korea, Japan are present); Russia is not).

Video call... Provides high quality video telephony over 3G networks. You can enter a number, call contacts from favorites or from "Contacts".

The new mobile operating system Microsoft Windows Phone is now being discussed more and more often. With the arrival of Nokia, it has a much better chance of gaining attention from customers. But other manufacturers are not sitting idle either. At the end of November, Samsung brings to the Russian market one of the most interesting smartphones based on WP7 - the model. This is the first Korean-brand Windows Phone in Russia.

Samsung is one of those manufacturers that support several platforms at once, including its own bada. This is absolutely true, because if one falls in sales, you can reallocate resources to the other. Now the priority is Android, on which Koreans have the maximum number of devices and sales. The Galaxy S II and its predecessor alone are worth something. Moreover, despite the purchase of Motorola, it is with Samsung that Google continues to make smartphones under its own brand. It is not known how long the peace-friendship will last, so the Koreans are looking around and preparing possible ways for another development of their portfolio. Windows Phone is one such path. Microsoft's platform is clearly less weighty for Samsung than for HTC or Nokia. But, nevertheless, it cannot be ignored.

It is important that in these conditions the Korean company did not make its first smartphone on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango just for show. This is one of the best Microsoft OS devices on the market. There are two important points here - the cost of 15 thousand rubles and the Super AMOLED screen. As a result, it looks very worthy not only against the background of HTC, but even in comparison with Nokia. It will appear at the end of November, i.e. before Nokia. Let's take a closer look at what to expect from the Koreans and compare them with the Nokia Lumia 800, HTC 7 Mozart.

Design, ergonomics

They didn't come up with something unique with the design. This is the familiar Galaxy R look with minimal differences. The back is the same solid removable part: smooth plastic with a cover made of metal of a different texture. Korean design in general is controversial, but here it feels like they were looking for a compromise or just one material was missing. On the other hand, there was a metal that its predecessors did not have, and many will like it.

There is only one color scheme - this is classic black, the most popular color option in Russia. In addition to the metal insert on the back, the body is completely plastic, but the materials are of high quality. The assembly also does not fail: no backlash, no creaking when squeezed - everything is fine. I was also pleased that the case is not easily soiled. In general, outwardly - one of the most pleasant devices on WP.

Thanks to the not very large 3.7 "display, the model will appeal to those who are tired of huge smartphones-shovels on Android. Most Windows Phone devices follow the way of the iPhone not only software, but also hardware. As a result, these are small, light models, even flagships (for example, Nokia Lumia 800) It is very pleasant to hold, the dimensions and weight are perfectly balanced. The thickness is 10.9 mm, and the weight is only 115.3 g. For comparison, the same Galaxy R weighs 131 g.

In terms of elements, everything is standard here. 3.5 mm jack on top, microUSB on the bottom, volume rocker on the left, on / off button and camera key on the right, and on the front panel there are return and search touch elements, as well as a mechanical “home screen” button. There is a status indicator - it is convenient to see missed calls or dead There is also a 0.3 MP front camera, which can be used for video telephony (by the way, for some reason, Nokia Lumia 800 doesn't have it).

According to the rules, Windows Phone has a separate hardware camera button. Moreover, due to the peculiarities of the OS, you can quickly remove from standby mode, and even if the lock code is set. I really like this feature of WP, you can take snapshots literally on the go. But another feature of this OS, on the contrary, I do not like - is the absence of a slot for a memory card. Microsoft is thus promoting its SkyDrive service, 25 GB is available to each owner.

All Windows Phone smartphones are now based on the Qualcomm platform, and Samsung is no exception. Our hero also runs on the Qualcomm MSM 8255 chipset and has a 1.4 GHz single-core processor. However, Windows Phone does not support multi-core yet, so the decision is justified. The speed of work thanks to the fast OS at the highest level. The Mango update has further improved this setting. The criticism is caused by old software versions that are not optimized for version 7.5 and do not even support multitasking. Gradually, there will be less and less of them, there are almost 50 thousand applications in total for WP7.

512 MB of RAM and 8 GB of non-expandable flash memory is a standard set familiar to us from Radar and many other smartphones. That's not much, but Microsoft is limiting manufacturers by promoting its SkyDrive service. Instead of a slot for a memory card, each owner of a Windows Phone smartphone is offered a “virtual” 25 GB flash drive. The disadvantage of this offer is that you will not receive information without access to the Internet. The rest is a familiar set. There is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. FM-radio has not disappeared, there is support for 3G and a front camera. It also supports DLNA and work in Wi-Fi hotspot mode. But the model does not have a TV-out, but this is a small loss.

Unlike HTC Radar or Nokia Lumia 800, the battery is removable, which is a plus. Its capacity also does not fail, it is 1500 mAh. A full charge lasts about two days on average. I tested it by streaming video at maximum brightness over Wi-Fi. It turned out 5 hours 32 minutes. MP3 files with the screen off and communications were played for 38 hours and 11 minutes. The indicator is excellent, despite the high frequency of the processor and the bright screen - the Super AMOLED technology affects, which is sharpened for low power consumption and disconnected communications. WP7 is better optimized for battery life than Android. But the constant appeal to social networks of the new Microsoft operating system reduces this advantage to a minimum. If you do not use this, you get indicators at the iOS level.

The Omnia W display is one of the best Windows Phone devices. It is second only to Nokia, but the difference is minimal, judge for yourself (Samsung on the left):

Super AMOLED 3.7 "is used. Brightness and contrast are maximum, viewing angles are very wide, and the image looks very good in the sun. The technology is capacitive, the touchscreen is pleasant. For its price, the best option and one of the main trump cards. The only thing is resolution, like everyone else. WP smartphones, here 800x480. If this is normal for our hero, then it is not enough for senior flagships. Microsoft restricts manufacturers in order to defragment software and because of the Qualcomm chipset. Hopefully, in the future we will see higher resolutions for WP.

But the camera is not the most powerful. It has 5 MP, flash and HD video recording at 720p at 30 fps. The settings are standard, nothing new. As for the quality, it is average. Pictures are blurred in low light conditions. The flash is powerful enough, but not too high-quality - it distorts colors a lot. Here are examples at maximum quality settings:

Let's call the design of the Korean smartphone boring, ordinary. For example, devices from HTC or Nokia look more impressive, they are immediately remembered. In our case, the phone is not remarkable at all, the monoblock looks simple and conservative.

At the same time, there is a complete similarity with the model line of that time. For example, next to the model looks on an equal footing, to some extent they can be called copies of each other. Modest black monoblocks with smooth sidewall edges and slightly protruding sides.

The assembly of the Korean smartphone is beyond criticism, excellent workmanship as usual. There is no need to choose the color of the case, only one universal version is offered.

The dimensions of the phone are 115 x 58 x 10.9 mm, the weight is 115 g. The result is a brick-block of average size, which is neither overweight nor uncomfortable in size. The device can be safely put in a jeans or jacket pocket.

The main body is made of plastic. Despite the fact that it is glossy and seems to be able to collect prints, there are few traces on it. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the main part of the rear panel is occupied by a metal insert. Thanks to her, it is possible to avoid the untidy look of the phone. Indeed, in most cases it is this area that gets dirty.

In front are the earpiece, proximity sensor and lighting. There is also a front camera.

At the bottom there are two touch buttons. The arrow takes you one step back, and holding this key brings up the menu of running tasks. Another button opens the search menu. The keys have white backlighting that works when pressed. The center button takes you to the home screen from any application. It is, unlike the others, mechanical, with a small stroke.

On the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the right is a very convenient volume rocker.

On the right side there is a raised key to lock the screen, as well as a dedicated two-way button for shooting.

At the bottom there is a universal microUSB port. A charger or cable is connected to it.

At the back at the top is the 5MP camera lens, positioned exactly in the center. To the right of it is a diode flash. To the left is the ringer speaker under a pair of slots.

It may seem that the metal cover is the back cover itself. However, it fits very well into the design and is only part of the removable panel itself.

There is a small notch on the side that will allow you to see the insides of the device. And here there is nothing special: a standard battery for Samsung smartphones and a SIM card slot located on the side.

Screen

Samsung Omnia W Super AMOLED with a resolution of 480x800 pixels and a diagonal of 3.7 inches, 16 million colors are displayed here. The smartphone is equipped with an accelerometer, proximity sensor and brightness control sensor. The screen is excellent: with bright and vivid colors, excellent viewing angles. If desired, you can activate an option in the menu that will automatically dim the brightness if a white picture is displayed to save energy.

I suggest looking at the Samsung Omnia W next to. Not without a drawback. PenTile can be seen in smartphones from both manufacturers. Interface

The lock screen should be called the most striking element of the phone shell. A background image from the device's memory is assigned here, it can be not only the picture offered by the manufacturer, but also any other image uploaded to the device by the user or made with the camera. In order to activate the screen, you need to press the lock key. After touching, the display will light up for a short period of time. You can see the time and date information on the screen. At the bottom of the event line, icons of new messages or calls will be displayed, if such are left without the user's attention. This also includes data on future events recorded in the calendar. The number of events of each type will be indicated.

Information about network connections is displayed at the top. If the player is running, then from here it will be possible to control the work of the widget, which is responsible for the process of playing music. Also, this element will help you change the sound profile mode. To get to the phone menu, you need to swipe up from the bottom of the lock picture. For those who want to close the contents of the smartphone from prying eyes, a password request function is provided.

The decoration of the main screen is simple and even ascetic. Now the bulk of smartphones offer a variety of widgets, all kinds of functions in order to maximize the use of desktop space. The WP7 developers dropped this idea. Instead, a new and unusual way of organizing the menu is proposed. The status bar at the top combines wireless connection and time information. Data on new events does not fall here. Moreover, most often this period disappears, the battery charge level is not visible. You need to touch the top of the screen to bring up this menu.

Most of the space is occupied by large squares, which are responsible for accessing certain sections. These are application shortcuts, the menu itself is located on the next tab. It is easy to get into it, it is enough to follow the directions of the single arrow, under which a gaping black hole opens. Swiping from right to left takes you to the main menu. All programs that are installed on your phone are listed in alphabetical order. This includes both standard applications and subsequently added by the device owner.

From here, any icon can be sent to the desktop. There they change places, are placed in the right order. You may notice that some elements occupy not one area, but two. These are great labels that add some variety. Moreover, some of them are provided with animation. For example, a gallery icon will show something like a slide presentation. Real-time weather indication is displayed. As information about new events arrives, the corresponding icons appear on the icons. This is the number of new SMS, emails, or missed calls. The list of shortcuts scrolls up and down, otherwise it does not move. The same principle applies to the main menu. In order to make it easier to manage a large number of programs in the future, a search function is provided here, which will save you from the tedious flipping of a long line of icons.

If you want to change the design, you can choose from a black or white background, as well as eleven design themes. "Theme" is a loud saying, they do not change the interface, they only change the color of the icons and some of the menu items.

The platform offers to take advantage of multitasking. You need to hold down the return button, after which a menu of windows will open, among which running applications will be displayed. There you can switch between them. However, this only applies to embedded applications. Third-party software does not work so smoothly, the user is faced with a lack of real multitasking. Today this is one of the main problems of the new platform.

Contacts

The phone book is divided into three sections. The first one shows all the names that are in the device's memory. The second displays the ones that were used most often, these are the most popular contacts. The last column will pull together news from social networks. For example Twitter or Facebook.

Contacts are displayed in a list that allows you to see the image assigned to the subscriber. Full name and surname do not fit on one line. Personally, I don't like this option. Given that there is a lot of free space on the screen, such an implementation of a functional element looks controversial. Above the list of names, about a quarter of the screen is occupied by the large section heading. On the side, a small area is occupied by a neighboring graph. The phone book is divided into small groups, above each of them a letter is highlighted in bright color.

In the settings, it selects the type of sorting of names and the variant of their display. There are book filter settings. From here, you can remove data from social networks if they interfere. Holding your finger on the line with the name of the subscriber, this contact can be moved to the desktop, deleted or changed.

When a new user is created, various data is assigned to it. Before that, you need to choose where the information will be saved: to your Windows Live account or another profile.

The new user receives a first name, last name, patronymic, place of work, pseudonym, appeal, picture. It is assigned several phone numbers of different types: mobile, home, work, organization, pager, fax. Moreover, a person, according to the platform's creators, can only have one mobile phone. The issue is solved by creating several contacts and combining them into one. But two home or work numbers. Three types of e-mail are set. Additional fields are assigned to the contact. This is the address, website, birthday, note, anniversary, loved one, children, office location, position. As a ringtone, you can set not only one of the files in the phone's memory, but also any other. The search menu will help you find the right person. The phone allows you to create user groups. They will be separately highlighted before the general list of names. By adding users to each group, you can follow the lives of friends, see their messages, pictures. Calls

To go to the dialing menu, you need to click on the icon, after which a list of numbers opens. The telephone part is divided into four groups. This is the call log itself, dialing, phone book and search. The device does not know how to remember the section that was used last time. Thus, to dial a number, you will always need to perform an extra action associated with the transition from the call list to the virtual keyboard.

During the conversation, information about the duration of the conversation is displayed on the screen, and before that, a picture will be displayed if it has been assigned to the contact. The virtual keyboard displays Latin characters, but they will not help when dialing a number. There is no function of automatic selection of suitable numbers. The only assistant in this matter is the search option.

The call list is very simple. Here, a long line of numbers goes the entire history of calls. It doesn't matter if the numbers were the same or not. The phone cannot combine calls of the same type. The caller's name or number will be displayed if no data has been stored in the phone's memory. In order to highlight the type of call (incoming or outgoing), a multi-colored backlight is used, which highlights the information under the number. By choosing a number from the list, you can see the call history when you dialed someone. A number is saved from the journal to the phone book either to an existing user, or a new one is created.

Posts

The correspondence is formed in two sections. The first consists of correspondence in the form of SMS and MMS. The other consists of Facebook contacts. Thus, you can correspond from here with users of the virtual community. Messages are displayed in a column. Here the sender's name or number is indicated in large print. Below the text of the last message is displayed in small letters. On the right is the day when the message was received. If you hold your finger on a line, a menu will open, with which the entire dialogue is deleted. If desired, single SMS are deleted in the correspondence between users. Any message from the dialogue can be forwarded. For clarity, the text of unread messages is highlighted in a bright color, based on the design theme.

If you open the chat window, messages will appear, which are divided into blocks. At the same time, incoming and outgoing SMS differ from each other in shades, which makes it easier to read. In addition, the date and time of receipt of the message are marked here. Above the message, the number or name of the person with whom you are communicating is displayed. If you click on this line, a menu will open that will allow you to make a call or see more detailed information about the subscriber.

When typing a message, you need to choose a sender. You can simply type numbers on the line at the top of the screen or select an existing contact. You cannot use previously used numbers. The text input field itself is located below, as new words are added, this space expands. When the number becomes more than sixty characters, the number of characters will be displayed below. This will help to take into account the volume of the new SMS, the sending of consolidated large messages is supported. A text message automatically turns into a multimedia message if you add a picture to it. In this case, only a snapshot from the camera or an image from the gallery is inserted. It will not be possible to convey any other information.

The settings in this section allow you to turn off Facebook chat, activate a delivery report, which will be received as a separate message. It is inconvenient that the phone does not know how to save rough drafts in memory. To a lesser extent, the lack of templates is critical, but it is worth mentioning this fact.

Email

The device offers a mailbox setup wizard. It will be windows live, outlook, yahoo mail or google mail service. You will have to configure other services manually, the same Yandex or Mail are not provided for automatic settings.

Each account is assigned a name, the interval for checking the box is configured: push-mode, every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Alternatively, you can check your mail manually. The time for loading correspondence is set: for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days or for the whole time. However, you cannot set a limit on the download of letters. Includes the signature text that will be displayed on the sent letter. The mailbox offers several category headings: all, unread, follow up, important. The interface resembles a message menu. The name of the sender is highlighted in large font, below the content of the letter is in small text. The time or date of receipt is indicated to the right. New letters are highlighted in bright color.

By holding your finger on the line with the message, you can delete it, mark it as read, move it to another folder, or assign a mark. Incoming emails with an attachment will display a paperclip icon to help you understand that something has been added to the message. There is enough space on the screen for information about five letters. There are four icons at the bottom. The first allows you to create a new letter, the second is responsible for selecting several objects, the other allows you to check your mail. The latter opens the search menu inside the correspondence archive.

Opening the received letter, you will see information about the sender, time and date of receipt, as well as the content. With the help of multitouch, it is easy to scale text to a convenient size. However, the text does not know how to adjust to the boundaries of the screen. The type of attachments is shown, the device allows you to download and view files of "office" types, but you cannot see where the uploaded document is. For clarity, unloaded attachments are displayed as a paperclip icon. Those that have already downloaded receive a different icon that matches their familiar symbol on the computer - the Word file icon is known to any user.

Text input

You can choose between portrait or landscape mode. In both cases, about half of the screen is allocated for the keyboard. A separate key is available to change the input language. Another special button stores a lot of emoticons in memory. They are in the form of symbols, and not the usual emoticons, which will require some knowledge in order to select the desired type when sending. Implemented sound accompaniment when typing, you can turn it off. The required language layouts are selected from the menu. By keeping your finger on the letter key, you can see a menu with additional symbols. For example, in the Russian layout, b is called through b, and e through E.

Copying and pasting of text is implemented. The cursor works in a similar way to help you correct typos. The built-in auto-substitution of words works very well, it has an extensive vocabulary, I liked it. The input speed depends on the user's skill. If you get used to the layout, you can type quickly enough.

The calendar

The device offers a choice of several ways to display information. This is a day scheduled by the hour, a list of scheduled events or tasks displayed in a separate column. In addition, all data can be displayed as a regular monthly plan. It is important to note that in some of the boxes, something will be written. However, you will only be able to see the scheduled events if you go to the section with this data by clicking on the date and opening a new menu. And this despite the fact that there is a lot of free space at the bottom, it could be used more reasonably. The device allows you to use several calendars at the same time, each of them is highlighted in a different color. In the settings, you can change it by choosing one of the possible options.

When creating a new event, several fields are filled in: subject, location, calendar, time, duration. Additionally, a reminder is set, which is triggered at the start of the event, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 minutes, 18 hours, one day, one week. A daily repeat is turned on, on every weekday, on every day of the week that coincides with the day the event was created, with every date that coincides with the date the event was created. Event attendees are added and will receive email notifications about the event. Also, notes are created for the new record.

Browser

HTML5 support borders on the absence of Adobe Flash. However, you can see animated ads on various resources, videos on YouTube are played. The browser allows you to keep open up to six windows at the same time. The loading speed of resources is high, and the work of the application itself pleases. It is fast, scrolling through even large sites occurs without delay. Unfortunately, the browser is unable to adapt the scaled font to fit the screen borders. You have to navigate the page to see the hidden text.

The address bar is at the bottom, right under the fingers, which is very convenient. An icon for reloading the page is provided on the left, an additional menu opens on the right. This includes the history of visited pages and bookmarks. The required resources can be added directly to the desktop. In the application settings, you can disable saving cookies, select the view mode. This item allows you to activate the mobile or full version.

The application works in landscape or porter mode, the set of features is the same. The search for the right words on the page works.

Music

The phone supports the formats.m4a, m4b, .mp3, .wma. The section with music and video is combined into a general group. This also includes podcasts and radio. Another tab shows history. Here you can look at songs that you listened to before or movies. The last list will show the new data that has been added to the phone. In each of the categories, except for the first one, file covers are shown, it looks beautiful.

The Music section will offer a list of files sorted by name based on the selected criterion. The following options are possible: artists, albums, compositions, playlists, genres. If you click on one of the letters, you can use the quick search function among the data.

When the song is playing, the cover of the file is displayed on the screen. At the top there are three standard player control keys. Below is information about the artist, album and track title. Below the song name, the names of the next two songs are indicated in small print. There is also information about the playing time and the total length of the song. However, there is no scroll bar rewind function, it does not work. To do this, you need to hold down the Forward or Back key to move to the desired area.

The repeat mode is activated for all songs or for just one. There is a mixed playback mode. Also, the song you like can be noted separately. If you click on the volume control button, then a small menu will open, where information about the track and buttons for moving between songs will be displayed. It is also available when the screen is locked, which is convenient.

The sound quality is good, however, the headroom is small, as is the case in other Samsung phones. The absence of an equalizer can also be noted, but it is pleasant to listen to music even without it.

Radio

The receiver is ascetic, only a line is displayed where a scale with numbers is displayed. Not only manual search works, but also automatic one. The desired stations are stored in the device's memory. There is no data here, for example, RDS information is not displayed. The design is very simple: white numbers on a black background and nothing else.

Video

The player is extremely simple. A list of files in the phone's memory is displayed here, after selecting the one you need, it will open in full screen, although black bars at the top and bottom are not excluded. The screen displays the duration of the clip, the time since the beginning of its playback. There are three keys to control the player, as well as a scroll bar that helps you quickly navigate through the movie. Declared formats: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m4v, .mbr, .wmv. There is no DivX or XviD support here. However, when copying a movie to your device via the Zune, the application will automatically convert the file to the correct format. Of course it will take time.

Camera

Installed 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. Shooting is started not only from the menu, but also using the dedicated key on the side. You need to press it and hold your finger for five seconds, after which you can take pictures. The button is two-position, comfortable. An excellent opportunity is to start shooting in locked mode, this allows you not to waste extra time, but to immediately start taking pictures.

The screen acts as a viewfinder. On the right is the button for switching between photo and video modes. Below is the digital zoom key. The last button is responsible for the settings menu. Gallery

Pictures from the camera and other images fall into the general section. It is called Photos and consists of several categories: favorites, new, programs. Pictures are sorted by albums, dates and people. This includes pictures from Facebook if you add your account to your smartphone.

Data viewing is simple and convenient. The screen displays a matrix of folders or the icons contained in it 2x3 or 4x5, respectively. You can change the scale of the picture with multitouch or double-clicking. Any image can be set as the lock screen wallpaper, sent by MMS, email, posted to Facebook or Twitter, or uploaded to SkyDrive. Also, the image is added to the list of favorites, opened with the program for editing.

An unnecessary file is deleted from here, while batch selection of several objects is impossible, each of them will have to be erased in turn. The face recognition function will allow you to tag people in the pictures. The photos can then be uploaded to Facebook.

Clock

Several alarms are stored in memory. Each of them is assigned a signal time, a repeat mode by days of the week. You can choose from melodies from the device memory. You can also give the alarm a name.

The calculator offers all the necessary functions for making calculations. If you turn the device on its side, an additional settings menu opens.

Navigation

Bing Maps is not performing well. Application capabilities are extremely scarce and limited. For example, you can't even get a route. At the same time, there is no localization, the street names are indicated in Latin letters. It is interesting that, judging by the characteristics of the phone, it supports GLONASS satellites, however, it has not yet been possible to verify this in practice.

Marketplace

As the name implies, this menu serves as a source for finding new programs. You will need a Windows Live account to make purchases. It's easy to get it, then you need to add your bank card details to purchase software. If you don't add it, you will be able to install exclusively free applications, which is logical. The menu is divided into groups. The first consists of programs and games. Then they go separately. The latter contains some application. The main page displays the number of available software updates, if any. By selecting a section, you can see the proposed software, divided for ease of search into different categories.

Each application is supplied with screenshots and a picture-icon. The price is indicated, while it is given in the currency of the country, information about which is indicated in the account. For example, I have an English Live account, prices are in pounds. When I started using Russian accounts, the price tag was in ruble terms. The rating of the program, reviews, its size are displayed. The dedicated key is responsible for the Yandex search engine. It opens when you click on this button and will search for data based on the entered words.
