Customizing appearance in 8.1. Changes in the interface, usability and functionality

Hello, friends! We continue to study the features of the interface of the new operating system.

Today we're going to talk about personalizing the Windows Start screen.

When switching to the new Windows 8.1 operating system, the first thing I was interested in was the ability to disable the password at system startup, I already talked about this a little earlier in. The second point is the ability to personalize the home screen. Out of habit, I decided to look into the Personalization section in the PC settings and, frankly, was surprised by the absence of this section. Is Microsoft really going to turn off this personalization feature, I wondered. It turned out not, everything is in place.

Changing the personalization settings after the last update is certainly a little confusing, but it seems that Microsoft has taken the path of finding all the settings by searching, rather than rummaging through the control panel.

How to change the background and color of the Start screen in Windows 8.1

As I said, we get used to using the search, make friends with the Win + S keyboard shortcut, it is it that is responsible for quickly calling the search bar.

We did not have time to type the desired word "Personalization", as we immediately see the tooltip → Change the background and colors of the initial screen.

Click, a side panel with the settings we need will appear in front of us. Changes take effect immediately on click. Very nice and comfortable. By the way, you can choose a desktop background, which I used.

There is another way. On the Start screen, use the keyboard shortcut Win + C, or move your mouse cursor to the lower right corner, where in the sidebar Settings → Personalization. For quick and easy navigation in the new Windows, do not forget to use search and hotkeys.

For a list of hotkeys, see the article "Keyboard shortcuts for Windows 8, which is located at. That's all! See you in new articles!

There are about 50 new features and improvements in Windows 8.1. Let's take a look at the most significant ones. I think nowadays there are many users who want to use the latest versions of software products.

Many will choose to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (for desktops) and Windows RT 8.1 (for tablets). These editions are based on Windows 8 and offer new ways to work, play, and more.

What happens to files and programs after updating Windows to version 8.1

Depending on the version of Windows, the update will be able to retain the following information:

  • Windows 8 - OS parameters, personal files, most of the applications
  • Windows RT - OS settings, personal files and most of the applications
  • Windows 7 - personal files
  • Windows XP - nothing will be saved. You will have to boot the system from the media and perform a clean install.

Changes in the interface in Windows 8.1

The Microsoft developers paid most attention to their favorite - the Metro tiled interface. The evolution of tiles continues! Now their size varies from a small square (like on Windows Phone) to a large, two wide tiles.

A small tile displays an application icon and a small notification, a large one displays a fairly decent amount of information. A large size can be set for a tile of any Microsoft application, if it is relevant for it, that is, if the application can display a lot of information on the tile, for example, as a weather widget.

To resize a tile, right-click on it, then click on the "Resize" button at the bottom of the screen and select the desired position in the list.

In the updated version of Windows 8.1, you can boot the operating system directly to the "Desktop", bypassing the start screen. However, this option is enabled in a not entirely obvious way. Right-click on the "Desktop" on the taskbar. Select Properties, go to the Navigation tab, and select the Open my desktop instead of the start screen when I sign in check box.

Council. The new version of Windows 8.1 allows you to boot the system directly to the "Desktop". If you do not need the initial screen, then you can completely disable it. This can be done using Metro Ul Tweaker for Windows 8. Just mark the option you want in the dialog box.

Windows 8.1 is finally able to use the desktop wallpaper as the background of the Start screen. No third-party apps are required for this.

To set a single background image for both desktop interfaces, right-click on the taskbar. Then select Properties, go to the Navigation tab, and select the Show desktop background check box on the Start screen. Click on the "Apply" buttons and the background - and the current "Desktop" wallpaper will appear on the home screen. The background will be slightly darkened so that the tiles don't blend in. The second option for setting a single background: on the home screen, open the button panel, click on the "Options" button, then select the "Personalization" menu item. Select the icon with the current desktop wallpaper (the last one in the list).

In anticipation of the release of Windows 8.1, users rubbed their hands together in anticipation of the triumphant return of the Start button. However, they were severely disappointed. Yes, the button is in the same place - in the lower left corner of the "Desktop". However, it looks and works differently than before.

Instead of the usual round button, the angular logo of the new Windows 8.1 flaunts. When you click on it, we do not get to the Start menu with a list of installed applications, but we will get an additional menu that can be called up by a right click, with its help you can get quick access to a number of settings, as well as to the "Explorer", "Task Manager" and "Control Panel ".

The only way to get the Start menu like in the screenshot above is to do the following: go to the Navigation tab in the Desktop Properties menu and check the box next to "Automatically open Applications view when you go to Start screen."

On windows 8.1 lock screen you can now play slideshows from photos stored on your PC hard drive or in the SkyDrive cloud storage. In addition, it became possible to answer Skype calls directly from the lock screen or turn on the webcam. In Windows 8, all settings related to the lock screen were collected in the "Personalization" section, and in Windows 8.1 they were moved to the "Computer" and devices section. Here you can still change the background of the lock screen, and the new options are located below. Slide the switch to the right to randomly display pictures. By default, the operating system will take them from the Pictures folder, but it is possible to add other folders - not only local ones, but also those that are in the SkyDrive cloud storage. To place a shortcut for launching the camera and thus be able to receive Skype calls directly from the lock screen, move the slider to the right.

A new button has appeared on the home screen, by clicking on which you can display a complete list of applications installed on your computer.

The list can now be sorted by criteria. A special mode has appeared for moving tiles and renaming groups. To call it, you need to select the tile and click on the special button in the lower right corner of the initial screen.

In Windows 8.1, the PC settings panel has changed: the frequently used elements of the classic control panel have moved into it. Now, when opening the "Computer Settings" panel, the user is taken to a new start screen, where the latest and frequently used settings are collected, many of them immediately with switches.

Next to the title there is a button for quickly finding the required parameters. By the way, the Computer Settings tile can be pinned directly to the Start screen. To do this, start typing on the Start screen, then right-click on Computer Settings and then select “To Start Screen” from the list.

Extending the functionality of Windows 8.1

Advanced search

Search functionality in Windows 8.1 is now tightly integrated with the Bing search engine. The search is performed not only in the file system of the computer, but also in the SkyDrive storage and the Internet, and in all sections at once. Search results are displayed in the sidebar, with files, programs, and settings found on the local computer first, and only then those found on the network. Clicking on one of them will launch the Bing app with search results for the selected query.

Integration with online storage SkyDrive

One of the important features of Windows 8.1 was the integration of the operating system with the cloud storage service SkyDrive. On this resource, the user can work with cloud versions of Microsoft Office Web Apps, creating and editing documents online (7 GB are allocated for data storage). The application of the same name allows:

  • save user files in the cloud and access them from anywhere;
  • view files stored in the cloud (including those shared by other users);
  • upload files saved on a computer to the cloud storage in order to access them from a smartphone, tablet and other devices;
  • download files from SkyDrive to your local computer or device.

The desktop client is now integrated into Windows Explorer. The Windows application SkyDrive is installed by default. Both components are actually part of the system and cannot be removed. There is an entire section in the PC Settings panel for configuring SkyDrive. There you can find out how much free space you have and buy additional disk space. It is known that SkyDrive can store documents, photos and videos. To save traffic, you can automatically change the quality of photos and prohibit uploading via mobile connections.

Portrait mode support

Another of the most notable changes in Windows 8.1 over Windows 8 and RT is support for portrait mode. This feature was designed primarily for 7- and 8-inch tablets. Portrait mode is primarily intended for reading and is available for all interfaces and embedded applications.

Scaling the "Desktop"

As more and more smartphones and other mobile devices with ultra-high-definition displays appear today, and users continue to work on them with desktop applications, the development of Windows 8.1 focused on improving display scaling. The maximum zoom ratio has been increased to 500%.

Section "This computer"

Windows 8.1 has simplified the standard Explorer view. All of a sudden, Libraries ceased to exist, and instead of the “Computer” section, “This Computer” appeared, which contains six new folders.

Another innovation of the next Windows update: all the functions of system restore and reinstalling Windows are now located in the "Computer settings".

Return of the Start button

The stumbling block - the "Start button" - did not appear in the new version of the OS in its original form. Fortunately for nostalgic users, Classic Shell brings back the classic Start menu and makes some customizations possible. After downloading and installing the program, click on the "Start Menu Settings" icon to add a Start menu to the "Desktop". On the "Start Menu Style" tab, select a menu design option.

On the "Basic Setting" tab you can fine-tune the interface. Specify the action to be performed after clicking the left mouse button on the Start button. If you want to open the Start menu, activate the radio button "Classic start menu". If you want the Windows 8 Start Screen, check the Windows Start Screen option. Set the Win button function under "Windows key open:". With its help, you can switch between the "Desktop" and the home screen. Click on the radio button "Display as a menu" to display the control panel as a menu.

The version of Internet Explorer 11 for personal computers has not changed, but the version for touch devices, according to the developers, was an evolutionary update of the web browser. The eleventh version of Internet Explorer is faster than its predecessor, moreover, it is optimized for touch screens.

Let's look at the most important improvements and innovations in the "mobile" version of the browser we have known for a long time.

  • Touch controls have been improved - the browser responds faster to screen touches. The address bar is optimized for touch control. When you enter an address, it offers suggestions for its ending (links to site sections, Bing search results, and Windows Store apps). The scroll gesture allows you to move forward and backward through the pages. Hovering your finger over an item displays its associated menu.
  • The central part of the screen is reserved for displaying sites, and the tabs and address bar are located at the bottom to make touch control more convenient.
  • One window can open 100 tabs. When you switch to a new tab, the rest of the tabs will be paused so as not to waste battery power.
  • Added a new parameter that enables permanent display of tabs and the address bar.
  • Selected sites are now sorted into folders with pictures
  • The download manager has been improved: it allows you to view the downloaded files, pause their download, open the folder with them.
  • The Tracking Protection function has been added - now services that can monitor user actions on the network are blocked.

New apps in Windows 8.1

Application for people leading a healthy lifestyle. Contains a list of exercise, diet, workout and articles from the internet on sports and health

A collection of recipes from the Bing search engine. It is possible to add your own recipes and create a shopping list for today

As the name suggests, the application is designed to scan documents and images.

Dictaphone software: records sound, plays back the recordings made and even knows how to cut them. Directly from the program window, you can delete and rename sound files

The app includes alarms, timer and stopwatch. For the alarm, you can set the on time, days and frequency. Moreover, if the alarm clock is "set", it will be able to display notifications even on the lock screen

The design of the "Store" has been significantly redesigned. On the start screen, we are greeted by icons of the most popular applications, and one of them is displayed as a large tile on the left. The description of the application has become more informative: on the left you can see its rating, a short and full description, a list of main functions, and in the center and on the right there are screenshots and information about the developer, size, age category, etc.

Windows 8.1 | Video

Here the main question of the article will remain unanswered -
how to change the background color of a window in Windows 8.1
For, for many users of this operating system -
the background color of the window is associated with the background color of the window,
colloquially referred to as an open folder.

Nostalgia for Windows XP

What a handy thing - Windows XP. There were absolutely no shadows and rounds on the buttons and sliders in it, for that all of them - well, absolutely everything - were obsessed with the screen and did not fly out of its limits. Moreover, it absolutely did not depend on the set resolution of the monitor itself, and each user was free to choose it according to his taste. The same cannot be said about Seven and, moreover, the Eight.

In Windows 8.1, the approach to customizing the appearance of working application windows and explorer folders has radically changed. From now on and forever, in our dear and beloved explorer, in such a necessary and necessary explorer, which we used to call just a folder, it is no longer possible to change, neither the font size, nor the background color of the window fill, nor the size of the icons, nor much more that can be was to tune according to your bit in the old pig (Windows XP).

Resentment at Uncle Bill

Starting with Windows Vista, Microsoft Corporation began a merciless and implacable struggle with its invention, on the basis of which all of its operating systems were created and developed - system windows (windows). Rather, not with the windows themselves, but with the settings for their appearance or, as they say nowadays, with the design themes.

With each new model (version) of Windows, the user's ability to change the appearance of the desktop decreases and tends to zero. But it is not surprising either. The operating system is more and more focused on tablets and high-end mobile devices, where the need to adjust the appearance of the desktop disappears due to the lack of such. It’s just not clear what to do for people who spend 12 hours a day at desktop (desktop) computers.

In general, one gets the impression that Microsoft no longer needs either its brainchild or the crowd of its admirers. And, she (the corporation) is trying in every possible way to stimulate the transition of its consumers to other types of operating systems, such as Linux. Otherwise, how to explain the systematic destruction of all virtual devices, to which everyone has become accustomed for so long and which, in fact, distinguished Microsoft's Windows from its counterparts. So, first - sawed off the famous "Start" menu. Then, we removed the system of custom screen settings. And what is left in the end? A banal videoplayer and a tetrisogoner for tablets - that's what they did with the once revolutionary operating system. Anyway. The essence of this publication is to shed at least a little clarity about custom display settings in Windows 8.1, or, as it is now proudly called, personalization.

Display settings (personalization) in Windows 8.1

My fight with Windows 8.1 started the hour I saw it. An incredibly inconvenient system to work with. Of course not. It is good to look at Vidaki on it and to gamble on the Eight is also not bad. It’s just not clear why Uncle Bill needed 20 years of development to concoct such an inconvenient mess like Windows 8.1.

So, now - all the famous Microsoft personalization of the user in Windows 8.1 comes down to forcing him to stare at an unregulated oak screen. Now, the personalized user must, as in the Soviet canteen, eat what they give. That is, those screen settings that the operating system adjusted during its installation - that's what it will be - all personalization. As the famous movie hero used to say - here's a sickle and here's a hammer. If you want - cut, but if you want - strike.

Now the user cannot selectively approach the choice of fonts or background for inscriptions in the window of this same folder or another Windows working application, and now there is no such sweet-hearted window menu with a choice of user options in the jungle of the new operating system settings, which was in Windows XP and in the classic Windows 7 theme.

For the sake of complete objectivity, it should be noted that in the Seven, the function of customizing the appearance of the application window was already flawed and worked only in the classic design theme. But in the Eight - this is not at all. Instead of a compact window menu, there are now only primitive setting buttons and labels for choosing a theme for the visual design of the screen, which are scattered throughout the monitor field. That's it, everything is clear and understandable. After all, the Eight was created for tablets, in which the scales on the screen are completely different and are fundamentally different from the desktop (desktop) computer. But it doesn't make it easier for me. As well as thousands of other users staring at the fluffy flies of the setting labels and buttons located in the corners of their screens.

In the dregs of crawling on the theme of the visual design of the desktop in Windows 8.1 - you can still try to find a button to change the color of the window. That's just, on closer inspection - it turns out that this is a button for choosing a rich palette of the window FRAME color, and not its background color. I am generally silent about setting a custom resolution for the screen - at the first attempt to adjust it, the operating system will kindly inform that some controls may appear off the screen. So it's better not to touch it at all. Otherwise, when setting up or launching applications, you will have to look for the coveted "OK" button or something like that for a very long time.

Why Windows 8.1 does not adjust display settings

All the troubles stemmed from the fact that Microsoft removed the classic theme from the OS kernel and removed the old theme engine, which would bring back the real classic theme and its adjustments. So, the only thing that can be done now is to come to terms with this state of affairs and still try to adapt the obstinate operating system to suit your needs. Downloading and installing various themes is useless, since they are all, at their core, just sets of new pictures for your desktop.

Download the classic theme for Windows 8.1

The web is full of offers to download and install a classic theme on your computer. Such proposals are generously flavored with sweet promises of getting rid of all troubles and hurray-shouts, like how good all this is, how great all this is. Because users remember the classic theme in Windows XP and Windows 7. At the same time, users firmly believe that by installing such a theme on their computer, they will be able to return to the operating system the lost opportunities for adjusting fonts and other attributes. Alas.

I strongly recommend neither downloading nor installing such crap on your computers, for one simple reason - the proposed panacea does not exist in Microsoft's nature. Since the developer himself cut out the old engine that served the themes, how will the installed software be served?

Under the guise of a classic theme, in fact - the user is offered to download the most ordinary high-contrast theme, which is the usual standard theme for Windows 8.1, with all sorts of color schemes. But why download a different crap if this theme is already installed on all OS? If someone needs it, you can just switch and adjust yourself. Without any download.

In order to cool down at least a little the ardor of those wishing to discuss this topic, I propose to recall the basics of programming and assigning color to design elements for the application (program) window. So, it is well known that if the programmer has explicitly set and indicated the appearance colors for the objects of his program, then all these objects will have the given color, even if you crack it. And no design theme will help here. Rather, she used to help. When there was an old dvhok in the operating system kernel. It was this engine that reworked the parameters of all custom window elements, bringing them in line with the settings made. And now - there is no such engine. So, alas. By the way, the lack of this very engine explains the indigestibility of fonts and other custom window elements in the new Windows. Since there is no handler, it means that all these elements look like. No, well, Uncle Bill came up with something there, about fonts, but it's not that, not that, sir. Gagging and scaling all the fonts at once is not what we dream of.

Yeah. Here's a bad luck. Thus, it turns out that there is no standard way to change the background color of a working application window in Windows 8.1 and make an individual font size for this very window. And, nevertheless, many (including me) are stunned by the dazzling white background tones of the explorer folders and office applications, in particular - Word and Notepad (Notepad). If you sit for half a day at such a snow-white desktop, then towards evening even a bucket of dark beer will seem white and white. And this is not "Gut". This is not even "Zer Gut". And what can you do?

If you ripen at the root of the problem, then the Windows OS is not to blame at all. Because, all serious modern programs and third-party applications now have their own settings for the background color of their working window. So Microsoft decided - why bother?

What remains is the office applications of Microsoft itself, which were previously regulated by system settings, and now, for some reason, Uncle Bill did not bother to connect them to the theme for visual design. This happened, apparently because in America already in kindergarten - everyone polls study the Windows registry, from which, in fact, all this is regulated.

Change the background color of the Word and Notepad window (Notepad)

It's up to us to change the background color of the Word window and Notepad.

It's a shame, but you can't do without going to the Windows Registry.

  • We launch the registry editor - regedit.exe. To do this, open the "Run" window or simply - press and squeeze the Win + Rr key combination. In the window that opens, enter regedit.exe and get into the Windows registry editor.
  • Next, go to the branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER \\ Control Panel \\ Colors
  • Next, find the Window parameter and change the color, indicating instead of 255 255 255 (white), for example, 200 200 200 (gray, in RGB). Color shades of color can be selected in any thread, a raster graphics editor, like Photoshop.
  • exit Windows (reboot) and enter again

This decision will only be partial. As already mentioned, many applications no longer support the Windows window color and have their own interface color. Therefore, the rest of the software needs to be configured separately. Often, this color is controlled in the style settings of the application itself.

Thus, the result obtained applies only to those programs and applications that use the Window parameter to display the background color of their window. But there are fewer and fewer such programs every day. Even Windows Explorer itself does not obey its registry and has separate settings for the background color of its folder window.

How to change the color of the explorer window (folder) Windows 8.1

To change the color of the explorer window (folder) of Windows 8.1, you need to understand that this is the same program as everything else that the programmers were wandering about. This means that it obeys the same laws. If there are no such settings, then - to change the background color of the window, you will need to stomp into the Windows registry, into the custom settings for the window view of a particular application and "pick" already there.

But, one more question remains unresolved - the color of the Windows Explorer window, because of which all the fuss flared up.

But it was also an unofficial announcement. This happened on October 18, 2013 - this is the date of the official launch of Windows 8.1. It became available through the Windows Store, on computers and on discs.

Windows 8.1 versions

Windows 8 is extremely easy to figure out today. De facto, there are two common options available, as was the case with Windows XP. as we remember, it was released in as many as six versions. this alignment has not changed - only something has been renamed. But Windows 8 has become "simpler": only four versions, two of which are supplied to manufacturers and corporations.

Now let's remember that Windows 8.1 is not a completely new generation of OS, but the development of the G8, so the differentiation of this OS will remain the same. Although something has changed here too. But first, here's a list of Windows 8.1 delivery options:

  • Windows 8.1;
  • Windows 8.1 Pro;
  • Windows 8.1 Enterprise;

In general, everything really remained as it was. Windows 8.1 will be the cheapest and most widespread version for the general consumer. Windows 8.1 Pro will come in handy for more advanced users who need BitLocker and EFS encryption, the ability to work in a Windows domain, boot from a virtual hard disk, and so on. At the same time, the Pro version is available for Russification of Windows 8.1 - for some reason, other versions of the system cannot change the language. So this is the best build of Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 Enterprise is designed for corporate users and will not be available for sale. Recall that its main differences from the Pro version are the ability to boot from a USB flash drive (Windows To Go), ease of bulk installation, extended capabilities for working in a local network, and so on.

What is Windows RT 8.1 is clear and without a detailed explanation - this is the version of the system for ARM-tablets. The first, as you know, failed. ... The other few manufacturers did not sell such devices either. So the second generation of tablets, except from Microsoft, can not be expected. But the most interesting thing is that at all. Most likely there will be just "Windows 8.1" and that's it. Just to make consumers forget the bad Windows RT experience.

There is one more important point regarding the OS update from Microsoft. You can download Windows 8.1 for free! This was done for obvious reasons - Windows 8 failed and we need to somehow maintain interest in it. Of course, the free version of Windows 8.1 will only be for owners of licensed copies of Windows 8. Although when it was an obstacle to downloading from torrents, right? There, Windows 8.1 has been available since late August 2013, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers can download it from early September. At the same time, the purchase of a separate Windows 8.1 will cost $ 120 (more precisely, $ 119.99), Windows 8.1 Pro costs $ 200, and the transition from the "regular" to the Pro version can be purchased for $ 100. Note that you cannot upgrade from Windows 7 to 8.1. Only up to Windows 8, and then it's free until 8.1.

By the way, we completely forgot about the kernel version. Everything here is rather unusual. Windows Vista has been labeled 6.0, Windows 7 6.1, and Windows 8 6.2. Windows 8.1 is not formally the next generation (that is, it is not Windows 9), and therefore there should be no change to the minor version. However, it happened! Windows 8.1 is kernel 6.3. The final build was numbered 6.3.9600. So it underscores the major changes to the system, it's really not a cosmetic rework and bug fixes.

There were no major changes in the Windows 8.1 setup program. It can hardly be distinguished from. The G8 is similar to Windows 7 in this respect, and the G7 to Windows Vista.

There are very few installation steps. First you need to select the language, locale, keyboard layout.

The size of the hidden system partition has not increased - it occupies 350 MB, as it was in Windows 8.

The process of copying files takes 4-5 minutes at most - this is one of the shortest operations during installation. More time is spent on initial setup.

The user is immediately asked questions regarding personalization. So it offers to choose the color of the design, and at the same time enter the name of the computer for the workgroup in the local network.

Otherwise, standard parameters are offered. A list of them is shown on the screen. But, we believe, many of these "multi-letters" will simply be skipped. In principle, Windows 8.1 works well this way.

Linking to a Microsoft account has become more serious - it is more difficult to create a local user at the first start. It makes sense - Microsoft wants more integration with its online services.

After that, Windows 8.1 can be used. But, we believe, some readers may have additional questions like "how to update Windows 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 RTM?" or "how to install Windows 8.1 from a flash drive?" Let's cover both of these topics.

Another interesting highlight related to Windows 8.1 is the improved support for 3D printers. The algorithm for sending a three-dimensional model for printing will change more precisely. If now during this process part of the data may be lost and the output will not be what you expected to see, then Windows 8.1 unifies and simplifies everything. It will be possible to send to print simply from the File-\u003e Print menu, like a regular two-dimensional drawing or document on paper. In practice, it looks like this:

Basically, this is all about the "iron" part of Windows 8.1. However, let's pay attention to one more thing - in Windows 8.1 there is no more performance index. Microsoft decided to abandon it. Apparently, it has simply lost its relevance.

Conclusion

According to the previous plan for updating operating systems by Microsoft, 2013 should not have been the time for the announcement of the next version of the OS. Maybe we were waiting for some Windows 8 Service Pack 1 and no more. But the market did not let the software giant rest on its laurels, but made it work actively and make Windows 8.1. It would seem that the OS index did not change very significantly, and therefore there are few changes there. But is it really so?

Windows 8.1 offered a noticeably prettier and more flexible start screen, returned the Start button, made it possible to download to the desktop, added several vital applications, updated old ones (especially the mail client), the system is more closely integrated with SkyDrive, offered noticeably more settings in tiled interface.

In addition, the new OS has something that is inherent in the new generation of Windows. For example, Internet Explorer 11, which finally learned how to work with WebGL. By the way, the graphics also got better - WDDM 1.3 supports more modern devices, and DirectX 11.2 support is also provided.

To top it all off - Windows 8.1 is a free update for all Windows 8 users! Of course, Microsoft didn’t take such hasty measures and steps with free distribution from a good life. Windows 8 and Windows RT were well received, and therefore something had to be done urgently. By the way, Windows RT will also receive the Windows RT 8.1 update. Right now we suggest watching a short video about him:

In the meantime, we have to wait for Windows 9, which will appear either in 2014 or in 2015. You will hardly have to get acquainted with the intermediate Windows 8.2 - there is not much time left before the "nine". And so we strongly recommend everyone to upgrade to Windows 8.1 if you are using Windows 8. Everyone else should go strictly at will. But in any case, the stupor that arose after the first acquaintance with Windows 8 should not be here. So give it a try and share your impressions in our comments below!

In Windows Vista, 7 and 8.1, standard windows are rectangular boxes with a wide top and thinner bottom and side borders. And although Aero, which is present in all these versions of the system, supports changing the thickness of the window border, the tools for adjusting the width of the window frames available through the shell interface are available only in Windows Vista and 7. Recall that in "Seven" need to click the link "Additional design options" in section personalizationand then select in the box "Color and appearance" element "Framing" and set the desired frame thickness.

It's not that simple in Windows 8.1. Changing the thickness of the border of windows is still supported by the system, but there are no more tools for this in the interface. So if you want to reduce or vice versa, increase the thickness of the window frames in Windows 8.1, you will have to work around it by applying a small registry tweak. Team regedit open Registry Editor, locate and expand the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Control Panel / Desktop / WindowMetrics

In the right part of the editor window, find the string parameter named PaddedBorderWidth... Its value will be equal to the width of the window borders. It is calculated by the formula -15 * width in pixels. Default parameter value PaddedBorderWidth is -60 , i.e 4 px , if you want to make the width larger or smaller, you must set a number that can be divided without a remainder by 15 .

For example, if you set -90 , then the thickness of the frame will be 6 px ... To make them as thin as possible, set the value 0 . If the value is zero, the border thickness will be 1 pixel. It's as simple as that. Yes, you must log out and log back in for the new settings to take effect.
